Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Spain

Spain — a country worth exploring

Spain's Camino de Santiago stretches over 800 kilometres across the north of the country, drawing travellers from around the world to one of Europe's most iconic pilgrimage routes. Beyond this famous trail, the country offers an extraordinary range of landscapes for road trips — from the rugged cliffs of the Costa Brava to the sun-drenched plains of Andalusia, and from the green valleys of Asturias to the volcanic terrain of the Canary Islands. Madrid to Barcelona covers roughly 620 kilometres, while Seville to Granada is a manageable 250-kilometre drive through olive groves and whitewashed villages. Spain's road network is modern and well-maintained, making it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome. Coastal routes wind past fishing villages and sandy coves, while inland roads lead to historic cities like Toledo, Salamanca, and Córdoba, each with centuries of heritage on display. The Picos de Europa mountain range in the north provides dramatic scenery and well-equipped campsites, and the Ebro Delta on the Mediterranean coast is a paradise for birdwatchers. With Yescapa, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners spread across Spain, choosing from a wide selection of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and genuine local tips to help you make the most of every stop.

Best time to visit

Spain welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring (April to June) is ideal for a campervan trip, with comfortable temperatures and festivals like Seville's Feria de Abril lighting up the south. Autumn brings the grape harvest season in La Rioja, perfect for food-loving road trippers. Summer is the most popular period along the coasts, so booking your Yescapa vehicle early ensures the best choice. Winter suits those heading to the Canary Islands or exploring Andalusia's mild climate. Peer-to-peer hire through Yescapa often means better rates outside peak months, giving you flexibility to plan a Spain road trip on your terms.

The best road trips in Spain

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Andalusian Heritage Trail

250 km 3–6 days

Starting in Seville, this 250 km route winds through Córdoba and its Mezquita before reaching Granada and the Alhambra. The roads are wide and well-suited to any vehicle size. Campsites with full hook-ups dot the route, and you can stop in the whitewashed village of Carmona along the way. A perfect short trip through Spain's cultural heartland.

The Catalan Coast Loop

280 km 3–6 days

This 280 km loop from Barcelona follows the Costa Brava north through Tossa de Mar and the medieval town of Pals, then curves inland to the volcanic zone of La Garrotxa before returning south. Compact campervans handle the coastal curves with ease. Stop at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres for a memorable detour through Spain's artistic heritage.

The Green Spain Route

400 km 5–8 days

Covering 400 km along Spain's northern coast, this route runs from Santander through the Picos de Europa National Park to Oviedo and onwards to the beaches of Lugo in Galicia. Expect lush green valleys, dramatic cliffs, and well-spaced campsites with motorhome service points. The coastal road offers regular viewpoints and fishing villages like San Vicente de la Barquera.

The Castilian Plateau Crossing

450 km 5–8 days

This 450 km route crosses Spain's interior from Madrid to León, passing through Segovia and its Roman aqueduct, the walled city of Ávila, and the university town of Salamanca. Roads are straight and flat, ideal for larger motorhomes. Campsites are quieter here than on the coast, with spacious pitches and easy access. A rewarding route for those who want to discover Spain beyond the beaches.

The Mediterranean Coastal Drive

600 km 7–11 days

Stretching 600 km from Barcelona to Almería, this route follows Spain's Mediterranean shore through Valencia, its City of Arts and Sciences, the palm groves of Elche, and the harbour town of Cartagena. Campsites along this coast are plentiful and well-equipped for campervans and motorhomes alike. The road stays close to the sea, with regular stops for fresh seafood and sandy beaches.

The Grand Tour of Spain

800 km 10–15 days

This 800 km loop starts in Madrid, heads south to Toledo and Córdoba, crosses to Málaga on the coast, then returns north through La Mancha and its windmill landscapes near Consuegra. It combines Spain's most iconic cities with quieter rural stretches. Motorhome-friendly campsites are available at every major stop, and the route uses well-maintained motorways throughout. Allow two weeks to enjoy it at a relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Spain

Spain has an extensive motorway network, with many routes operating as toll roads (autopistas) alongside free alternatives (autovías). Tolls can be paid at booths by card or cash, and electronic systems like Via-T speed up the process. Motorhomes under 3,500 kg follow standard car speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with services appear regularly along major routes. Mountain passes in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada may have gradient restrictions for larger vehicles, so checking your route in advance is recommended.

We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.

Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.

We had a great Motorhome Experience in the Dordogne area in France! Guy’s motorhome had everything we needed for a comfortable and adventurous stay. A great kingsize bed (for a motorhome anyway…) and large fridge, warm water, heating everything is there. If you’re looking for a reliable modern motorhome rental , we highly recommend renting Guy’s motorhome. Marian & Wim.
