Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Europe

Europe — a country worth exploring

Europe stretches across 10.18 million square kilometres, connecting 44 countries by a network of roads that makes it one of the most rewarding continents to explore on four wheels. From the fjords of Norway, where the Atlantic Ocean Road spans eight bridges over 8.3 kilometres, to the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, the variety of landscapes is extraordinary. The distance from Lisbon to Helsinki covers roughly 3,900 kilometres, while a drive from Edinburgh to Athens is around 3,200 kilometres — both entirely possible by road. Major landmarks such as Mont Blanc in the Alps, the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia, the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, and the Alhambra in Granada each offer a completely different experience. Coastal routes, mountain passes, and wide-open plains mean there is always a road suited to your vehicle and pace. Whether you prefer compact campervans for winding Mediterranean lanes or spacious motorhomes for long stretches of autobahn, the continent adapts to every style of travel. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Europe, giving you the flexibility to pick up a campervan close to your starting point and drop it off wherever the road takes you. Peer-to-peer sharing means a wider choice of vehicles at a range of price points, so your European adventure starts on your terms.

Best time to visit

Europe rewards travellers in every season. Spring brings wildflower festivals like the Keukenhof tulip season in the Netherlands from mid-March to mid-May, while summer opens up Scandinavia's midnight sun routes. Autumn is ideal for wine harvest events such as the Fête des Vendanges in France each October. Winter suits southern destinations — the Algarve and Greek islands stay mild and welcoming. Peak season runs from June to August, when campsite availability tightens across popular regions, so booking ahead is wise. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often stays competitive even in high season, and hiring a campervan or motorhome outside peak months can bring excellent value.

The best road trips in Europe

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Great Alpine Road

450 km 5–8 days

From Munich via Innsbruck, the Brenner Pass and Bolzano to Lake Garda – this route takes you across roughly 450 km through the heart of the Alps. Spectacular passes, alpine meadows and mountain lakes alternate along the way. A campervan handles the narrower pass roads more easily, though larger vehicles manage fine too. Campsites on Lake Garda make a perfect finale.

Grand Mediterranean Circuit

900 km 10–15 days

From Barcelona via the Côte d'Azur, the Italian Riviera and Tuscany to Rome – roughly 900 km of pure Mediterranean coastline. Along the way you pass Nice, Genoa, the Cinque Terre and Pisa. Motorways are tolled but well maintained. Coastal campsites offer pitches for every vehicle size. A tour connecting three countries and countless culinary experiences across southern Europe.

Portugal's Atlantic Coast

400 km 5–8 days

From Porto along the Atlantic coast via Nazaré and Peniche to Lisbon and on to the Algarve – roughly 400 km of coastal roads with surf spots, fishing villages and sea cliffs. Roads are wide and well suited to motorhomes. Campsites such as Orbitur in Peniche offer direct beach access. A road trip that perfectly blends culture and nature across Portugal.

Scandinavian Fjord Tour

700 km 7–11 days

From Oslo via Bergen and the fjord region to Trondheim – roughly 700 km through Norway's impressive fjord landscape. The Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord are among the highlights. Ferry crossings form part of the route and are straightforward for campervans. Campsites with fjord views offer memorable overnight stays. Roads are well maintained, with tunnels and bridges connecting coastal sections.

The Amalfi Coast and Gulf of Naples

250 km 3–6 days

Start in Naples and drive via Sorrento along the legendary Amalfi Coast to Salerno. Along the way you'll pass Positano, Ravello and Mount Vesuvius. The winding coastal roads suit a campervan perfectly. Plan stops at small seaside campsites – around 250 km of pure Mediterranean atmosphere.

Andalusia's White Villages

280 km 4–6 days

From Málaga, drive through Andalusia's white villages via Ronda and Grazalema to Cádiz. Olive groves, mountain scenery and Moorish architecture accompany you across roughly 280 km. Roads are well maintained and suitable for motorhomes. Campsites in the Sierra de Grazalema offer peaceful stops away from the cities.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Europe

Driving across Europe means navigating different toll systems from country to country. France, Spain, Italy, and Portugal use toll motorways — most accept cards or electronic tags like the Via-T in Spain or Telepass in Italy. Germany's autobahns are toll-free for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, while Switzerland requires an annual vignette. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are typically lower than for cars: 90 km/h on motorways in France and 100 km/h in Germany, for example. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points are common along major routes, especially in France and Scandinavia. Always check height and weight restrictions before entering tunnels or mountain passes, particularly in the Alps.

We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend this campervan. We explored Annecy, Lake Geneva and the Jura.

The owner Charlotte was super helpful and very kind. The van worked out perfectly for us as we followed the Tour de France around for a few days. The van has enough room to be comfortable and small enough to navigate the skinny French streets. Fully equipped with anything you would need. A great experience, thanks Charlotte!
