Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Finland

Finland — a country worth exploring

Finland's vast network of over 40 national parks stretches across 338,000 square kilometres, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore by road. From the capital Helsinki to the Arctic town of Utsjoki, the northernmost point of the EU, the distance is roughly 1,100 km — a journey that takes you through dense boreal forests, past thousands of lakes, and eventually above the Arctic Circle. Along the way, landmarks like the Saimaa lake district (home to the endangered Saimaa ringed seal), the medieval Olavinlinna Castle in Savonlinna, and the towering sand dunes of Kalajoki offer a remarkable variety of landscapes and experiences. The drive from Turku on the southwest coast to Rovaniemi in Lapland covers around 750 km, crossing the Finnish Lakeland and revealing how dramatically the scenery shifts from archipelago coastline to subarctic wilderness. Finland's well-maintained roads and generous freedom-to-roam rights (known as Everyman's Rights) make it particularly well suited to campervan and motorhome travel, with plenty of rest stops and service points along major routes. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Finland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your trip — whether you need a compact campervan for a couple or a spacious motorhome for the whole family.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Finland depends on what you want to experience. June to August brings the midnight sun, with nearly 24 hours of daylight in Lapland — ideal for long driving days and outdoor activities. The Ruisrock festival in Turku each July is one of Europe's oldest rock festivals and a great reason to head southwest. September and early October reward travellers with the spectacular ruska (autumn foliage) season across Lapland. Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive pricing outside the peak summer months, so booking a motorhome for a September trip through Finland can be both quieter and more affordable.

The best road trips in Finland

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.

The Saimaa Lakeland Loop

250 km 3–6 days

This 250 km loop through Finland's Lakeland links Savonlinna and its medieval Olavinlinna Castle with the scenic lakeshore town of Puumala. Ideal for a campervan, with lakeside rest stops and well-signed routes through quiet forest roads. Allow 3–6 days to enjoy the pace.

The Turku Archipelago Trail

200 km 3–5 days

Covering 200 km, this route follows Finland's official Archipelago Trail from Turku through Parainen and Nauvo, using free ferries to hop between islands. A compact campervan is perfect for the narrow roads. Plan 3–5 days to explore fishing villages and coastal scenery.

The Ostrobothnia Coastal Route

400 km 5–8 days

Drive 400 km along Finland's western coast from Vaasa to Kokkola, passing the UNESCO-listed Kvarken Archipelago and the historic wooden town of Jakobstad. Flat terrain and good roads suit any motorhome. Allow 5–8 days, with plenty of seaside campsites along the way.

The Central National Parks Circuit

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km circuit connects Hiidenportti and Tiilikkajärvi national parks via Kuopio, weaving through Finland's forested heartland. Well-maintained roads make it accessible for both campervans and motorhomes. Set aside 5–8 days to hike trails and visit lakeside saunas.

The Lapland Crossing

550 km 7–11 days

Stretch across 550 km from Rovaniemi to Kilpisjärvi near the Norwegian border, crossing Finland's Arctic wilderness. Stop at Muonio and Enontekiö for local Sámi culture. A motorhome with good heating is recommended. Allow 7–11 days to soak in the midnight sun or northern lights.

The Grand Tour of Finland

800 km 10–15 days

At 800 km, this route runs from Helsinki north through Jyväskylä and Oulu to Rovaniemi, covering Finland from south to Arctic Circle. Campsites and service points are plentiful along the E75. A campervan or motorhome works well — plan 10–15 days for the full experience.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Finland

Finland has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire country without paying any road fees. The general speed limit on motorways is 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes and campervans over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on all roads. Most Finnish highways are well-maintained two-lane roads outside the Helsinki metropolitan area, with dual carriageways mainly connecting larger cities like Tampere and Turku. Rest areas with waste disposal points and fresh water are spaced regularly along main routes. In Lapland, watch for reindeer on the road — they roam freely and are a common sight, especially from autumn through spring.

Overall, a great experience! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the van itself was really nice and comfortable. The pickup process was a little busy, with quite a queue, and the van wasn’t perfectly clean when we picked it up. However, these were minor points and didn’t take away from the overall experience. Everything else was smooth, easy, and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it!
