Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Iceland

Iceland — a country worth exploring

Iceland's Ring Road, known as Route 1, stretches 1,322 kilometres around the entire island, making it one of the most iconic driving loops on the planet. From the powerful Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal fields of Haukadalur to the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón, the landscape shifts dramatically every hour behind the wheel. Reykjavík to Akureyri in the north covers roughly 390 kilometres, while the eastern stretch from Egilsstaðir to Höfn runs about 250 kilometres through remote fjords and vast lava plains. Much of the interior highlands remains accessible only via gravel F-roads, which are closed in winter and restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so the coastal routes are where most campervan travellers focus their itineraries. Compact campervans handle the narrower roads around the Westfjords with ease, while larger motorhomes are ideal for families cruising the well-paved southern coast. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Iceland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles suited to the terrain and your travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know the roads best.

Best time to visit

The best months to hire a campervan in Iceland run from June to August, when daylight stretches to nearly 24 hours and all highland F-roads reopen. The Þjóðhátíð festival on the Westman Islands in early August draws thousands for music and bonfires, while Reykjavík Culture Night in late August fills the capital with free concerts and fireworks. September and early October bring shorter days but also the chance to spot the northern lights from your campervan. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better peer-to-peer rates and wider vehicle availability across Iceland.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula Circuit

280 km 3–6 days

This 280 km loop from Borgarnes circles the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland, taking in the Snæfellsjökull glacier, the fishing village of Arnarstapi, and the dramatic basalt columns at Lóndrangar. Compact campervans navigate the narrow coastal roads easily, with campsites at Ólafsvík and Grundarfjörður.

The Diamond Circle of the North

450 km 5–8 days

Covering around 450 km from Akureyri, this route loops through Húsavík for whale watching, the horseshoe canyon of Ásbyrgi, the powerful Dettifoss waterfall, and the geothermal baths at Mývatn. Roads are well paved and suit both campervans and motorhomes. Campsites at Mývatn and Húsavík offer full facilities.

The Eastfjords Explorer

This 400 km route from Egilsstaðir winds through Iceland's Eastfjords, passing the remote village of Seyðisfjörður, the Lagarfljót lake, and the colourful town of Fáskrúðsfjörður. What you need to know about roads and motorways in Iceland

Iceland has no motorway toll system, so all roads including Route 1 are free to drive. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans are generally 90 km/h on paved roads and 80 km/h on gravel sections. Single-lane bridges are common on rural stretches — the vehicle closer to the bridge has right of way. F-roads in the highlands are unpaved, often include river crossings, and are legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so standard campervans and motorhomes must stick to paved or well-maintained gravel routes. Fuel stations can be over 100 km apart in the east and north, so plan refuelling stops carefully.

It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!

It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
