The road is well suited to motorhomes, with regular campsites along the way.
Starting from Reykjavík, this compact route takes you through Þingvellir National Park and past the Gullfoss waterfall to Iceland's south coast. In Vík you can explore black sand beaches before looping back via Selfoss. Perfect for a campervan — campsites are closely spaced across roughly 250 km.
From Borgarnes, follow the coastline of the Snæfellsnes peninsula to the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Along the way, visit the fishing village of Arnarstapi and the basalt cliffs of Lóndrangar. Iceland has a well-spread network of campsites along the Ring Road and across its main regions. Many sites offer electric hook-ups, hot showers, and cooking facilities — ideal for travellers in a motorhome or campervan. From coastal spots overlooking the Atlantic to sites nestled among lava fields, Iceland offers a wide variety of places to spend the night under open skies.
Iceland has no motorway toll system, so all roads including Route 1 are free to drive. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans are generally 90 km/h on paved roads and 80 km/h on gravel sections. Single-lane bridges are common on rural stretches — the vehicle closer to the bridge has right of way. F-roads in the highlands are unpaved, often include river crossings, and are legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so standard campervans and motorhomes must stick to paved or well-maintained gravel routes. Fuel stations can be over 100 km apart in the east and north, so plan refuelling stops carefully.
We had an amazing experience with both the campervan and its owner, Alvaro! Alvaro is a super friendly, cheerful, and helpful young guy. He personally picked us up from the airport and gave us some fantastic recommendations for beautiful places to visit in Mallorca, including hidden gems that only a local would know about. He also suggested some great local restaurants where we could try traditional Mallorcan specialties. After we returned the campervan, he was kind enough to drop us off at a location of our choice. Communication with him throughout the entire trip was excellent — easy, friendly, and really helpful. The campervan itself is very cozy, comfortable, and well-equipped. It has everything you need for a wonderful getaway for two people. Fuel consumption is around 8–10 L/100 km, which is perfectly reasonable for this type of vehicle. We rented Máximo’s van for our trip to La Palma, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience! If you’ve driven there, you know how steep and challenging the roads can be, but we always felt safe and comfortable. The van has absolutely everything you could need, even for remote workers like us. Máximo was incredibly helpful, flexible, and communicative from start to finish. He even accommodated a few extra requests as our van broke down while we were driving from Lanzarote and we urgently needed a replacement. He really went above and beyond to help us out.
