Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Iceland

Iceland — a country worth exploring

Iceland's Ring Road, known as Route 1, stretches 1,322 kilometres around the entire island, making it one of the most iconic driving loops on the planet. From the powerful Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal fields of Haukadalur to the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the glacial lagoon at Jökulsárlón, the landscape shifts dramatically every hour behind the wheel. Reykjavík to Akureyri in the north covers roughly 390 kilometres, while the eastern stretch from Egilsstaðir to Höfn runs about 250 kilometres through remote fjords and vast lava plains. Much of the interior highlands remains accessible only via gravel F-roads, which are closed in winter and restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so the coastal routes are where most campervan travellers focus their itineraries. Compact campervans handle the narrower roads around the Westfjords with ease, while larger motorhomes are ideal for families cruising the well-paved southern coast. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Iceland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles suited to the terrain and your travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know the roads best.

Best time to visit

The best months to hire a campervan in Iceland run from June to August, when daylight stretches to nearly 24 hours and all highland F-roads reopen. The Þjóðhátíð festival on the Westman Islands in early August draws thousands for music and bonfires, while Reykjavík Culture Night in late August fills the capital with free concerts and fireworks. September and early October bring shorter days but also the chance to spot the northern lights from your campervan. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better peer-to-peer rates and wider vehicle availability across Iceland.

The best road trips in Iceland

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

North Iceland: Akureyri and the Diamond Circle

450 km 5–8 days

From Akureyri, explore the Diamond Circle taking in Lake Mývatn, the Goðafoss waterfall, and the Ásbyrgi canyon. The route passes through Húsavík, famous for whale watching, and covers around 450 km. A motorhome gives you the comfort and storage needed for this multi-day tour through northern Iceland.

Exploring the Eastfjords

400 km 5–8 days

From Egilsstaðir, this route winds through Iceland's remote Eastfjords. You pass the colourful village of Seyðisfjörður, the Reyðarfjörður inlet, and the nature reserve at Borgarfjörður eystri. Around 400 km on quiet roads — perfect for enjoying the solitude of the fjord landscape in a campervan.

Half the Ring Road: Reykjavík to Egilsstaðir

900 km 7–11 days

This route follows the southern half of Iceland's Ring Road from Reykjavík through Vík and Höfn to Egilsstaðir. Across roughly 900 km you experience the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, and the coastal villages of the southeast. The road is well suited to motorhomes, with regular campsites along the way.

The Golden Circle and South Coast

250 km 3–6 days

Starting from Reykjavík, this compact route takes you through Þingvellir National Park and past the Gullfoss waterfall to Iceland's south coast. In Vík you can explore black sand beaches before looping back via Selfoss. Perfect for a campervan — campsites are closely spaced across roughly 250 km.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula

280 km 3–6 days

The route covers around 280 km and suits a campervan well, as roads are narrow but well maintained across this part of Iceland.

The Complete Ring Road

1,322 km 10–15 days

The full Route 1 around Iceland covers 1,322 km, connecting Reykjavík, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, and Höfn. You cross lava fields, glacier valleys, and coastal stretches with views over the Atlantic. What you need to know about roads and motorways in Iceland

Iceland has no motorway toll system, so all roads including Route 1 are free to drive. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans are generally 90 km/h on paved roads and 80 km/h on gravel sections. Single-lane bridges are common on rural stretches — the vehicle closer to the bridge has right of way. F-roads in the highlands are unpaved, often include river crossings, and are legally restricted to 4x4 vehicles, so standard campervans and motorhomes must stick to paved or well-maintained gravel routes. Fuel stations can be over 100 km apart in the east and north, so plan refuelling stops carefully.

Feeling right at home Traveling across Portugal with Koda was a perfect, unique, and wonderful experience ☺️ Carina and Rafaela met us right at the airport and explained everything about the van—covering every detail clearly and effectively. We had never taken an off-the-cuff trip like this before; without any set plans, we drove all the way to Sagres, navigating easily through narrow roads, campsites, and stunning beaches 😍 Its compact size makes it comfortable to drive almost immediately, allowing for effortless maneuvering even on narrow roads, whether driving uphill or on light off-road terrain. The van is fully equipped: it has kitchenware, a sink, a convenient handheld shower, and even a solar shower, plus two camping chairs and an easy-to-assemble table. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and when not in use, it converts into a small bench. It was easy and delightful to feel right at home during this vacation; we can’t wait to return to Portugal to explore the north with Koda 🧡

Our experience with Ivan and Tamara was absolutely wonderful from beginning to end. They were incredibly kind, friendly, and helpful, and supported us with many things throughout our trip. The motorhome was excellent, extremely clean, comfortable, and fully equipped with everything we needed. Ivan and Tamara also kindly picked us up from the airport and took us back at the end of our trip. They and their family welcomed us so warmly that we immediately felt at home. This was much more than just renting a motorhome—we arrived as guests and left feeling that we had made wonderful new friends in Switzerland. It was an unforgettable experience, and we would definitely rent from Ivan and Tamara again without hesitation. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for an excellent motorhome and genuinely caring hosts. Thank you, Ivan and Tamara, for your kindness, hospitality, and friendship. We hope to see you and your lovely family again soon!
