Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Slovenia

Slovenia — a country worth exploring

Slovenia packs an extraordinary amount of diversity into just 20,273 square kilometres, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore by road. From the Julian Alps in the northwest to the 46-kilometre Adriatic coastline near Koper, the landscape shifts dramatically within short distances. Ljubljana, the capital, sits roughly 120 km from Triglav National Park, where Mount Triglav rises to 2,864 metres as the country's highest peak. Head southeast and you'll reach the Škocjan Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the largest underground canyons in the world. Lake Bled, with its island church and medieval castle perched above the water, is just 55 km from Ljubljana — an easy day trip or a perfect first stop on a longer route. The Soča Valley offers turquoise river waters ideal for paddling and riverside camping, while the Karst region introduces rolling vineyards and traditional stone villages. Driving a campervan through Slovenia means covering real ground without long motorway stretches, and the well-maintained roads make even mountain passes accessible for larger vehicles. A motorhome gives you the freedom to wake up near alpine meadows one morning and by the sea the next. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the country, choosing from a range of campervans and vehicles that suit your group size and travel style — a practical, personal way to discover Slovenia at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Slovenia's campervan season runs from April through October, with each month offering something distinct. June is ideal for exploring the Julian Alps before the summer rush, and it coincides with the Ljubljana Festival, which fills the capital with open-air concerts and theatre from late June through September. In August, the Radovljica Chocolate Festival draws food lovers to one of the country's prettiest medieval towns. Spring and early autumn bring quieter roads and lower prices — a real advantage when hiring through Yescapa, where peer-to-peer pricing already tends to be more competitive. Book ahead for July and August to secure the best motorhome options.

The best road trips in Slovenia

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Grand Tour of Slovenia

550 km 10–15 days

This comprehensive 550 km loop takes you through the entire country: from Ljubljana to Lake Bled and Triglav National Park, on to Bovec, down to the coast at Piran, through the Karst to Postojna, and back via Celje and Maribor. You experience Alps, Mediterranean, and vineyards in a single trip. The mix of motorways and country roads suits both a campervan and a motorhome. Allow at least ten days to enjoy Slovenia's full diversity at a relaxed pace.

Soča Valley Circuit

120 km 3–5 days

Start in Bovec and follow the emerald Soča River through Kobarid to Tolmin. This 120 km route passes rapids, suspension bridges, and the Napoleon Bridge viewpoint. Roads are narrow but well-maintained, making it ideal for a campervan. Riverside campsites offer pitches with water views and easy access to kayaking and hiking trails in Slovenia's alpine west.

Karst Country and Coast

80 km 3–6 days

From Ljubljana, cover roughly 80 km to reach Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle before continuing to the Adriatic coast at Piran. Stop at the Lipica Stud Farm, birthplace of the Lipizzan horse. The roads are wide and flat, comfortable for a motorhome. Coastal campsites near Portorož offer sea-view pitches, and Slovenia's short coastline means everything is within easy reach.

Slovenian Alpine Road

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km loop runs from Kranjska Gora over the Vršič Pass to Bovec, through the Soča Valley, past Lake Bled, and back. Along the way, visit Lake Jasna, the Zelenci Nature Reserve, and the Vintgar Gorge. Mountain roads suit a nimble campervan — allow extra time for photo stops and short hikes. Campsites are plentiful across this part of Slovenia, with many offering mountain views.

Thermal Springs Route

400 km 6–9 days

Start in Ljubljana and drive roughly 400 km through eastern Slovenia. Visit Terme Čatež near Brežice, Terme Olimia in Podčetrtek, and Terme Ptuj, one of Europe's oldest thermal towns. The route winds through the gentle vineyards of the Štajerska region and past the historic town of Celje with its hilltop castle. Wide roads make this stretch comfortable for a motorhome, and several campsites offer direct access to thermal pools.

Slovenian Wine Trail

280 km 5–8 days

This 280 km route connects Slovenia's three major wine regions: Goriška Brda in the west, the Vipava Valley wine road, and the Jeruzalem hills in the Štajerska region. Along the way, visit estates producing local varieties like Rebula and Šipon while enjoying panoramic views over rolling vineyards. Narrow country lanes suit a campervan best. Agritourism stopovers often include tastings and overnight pitches right among the vines.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Slovenia

Slovenia uses a vignette system for its motorways. You'll need to purchase an e-vignette online or at petrol stations before entering any highway — weekly, monthly, and annual options are available. The speed limit on motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 80 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 100 km/h. The main A1 motorway connects Koper on the coast to Maribor in the northeast via Ljubljana, covering around 200 km. Rest areas with facilities are well spaced along major routes. Some mountain roads, particularly the Vršič Pass, have tight hairpin bends and height restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before planning alpine routes.
