The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Switzerland's Gotthard Pass, first crossed by mule trains in the 13th century, remains one of Europe's most iconic alpine crossings and a must-drive route for any road trip enthusiast. From the shores of Lake Geneva to the peaks of the Bernese Oberland, this compact country packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a relatively small area. Zurich to Lugano is roughly 210 km, yet the journey takes you from German-speaking urban culture through the dramatic Gotthard tunnel and into the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Meanwhile, Bern to Interlaken covers just 56 km but delivers views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau — three of the most recognisable summits in the Alps. Switzerland's well-maintained roads wind through flower-filled valleys, past glacial lakes like Lake Lucerne and Lake Thun, and over high-altitude passes such as the Furka and Susten. The country's network of clearly signposted scenic routes makes it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome, with plenty of designated overnight parking areas along the way. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Switzerland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles — from compact campervans perfect for mountain passes to larger motorhomes suited to lakeside touring. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips from people who know Swiss roads best.
Switzerland welcomes travellers from late spring through to autumn, with June to September offering the longest days and open alpine passes. The Montreux Jazz Festival in July draws music lovers to the shores of Lake Geneva, while the Fête des Vignerons in Vevey celebrates the country's winemaking heritage. Most mountain passes, including the Furka and Susten, are open from June to October, making this the prime window for high-altitude touring by campervan. Shoulder months like May and early October bring quieter roads and lower prices through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, ideal for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Book ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of motorhomes across Switzerland.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This compact route through Switzerland links Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Murten and Lake Biel across roughly 180 km. Start in Neuchâtel, drive through medieval Murten to Biel and explore St Peter's Island. Perfect for a campervan — the lakeside roads are narrow and campsites sit right on the waterfront.
Around 220 km take you through the Appenzell region and Lake Constance area in eastern Switzerland. Visit the Säntis summit, stroll past the painted facades of Appenzell village and enjoy the Lake Constance panorama at Rorschach. The gentle hills and wide valleys suit a motorhome just as well. Cheese dairies along the way invite tastings.
Across roughly 350 km you explore Lake Geneva and the Valais in western Switzerland. Start in Geneva, drive through Montreux and the Lavaux terraces to Sion, then continue to Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn. Thermal baths in Leukerbad offer a welcome break. The route mixes wide lakeside roads with narrower Alpine valleys — a campervan is especially nimble here.
Around 400 km connect the Bernese Oberland with Central Switzerland on this route. Drive from Thun through Interlaken into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, cross the Brünig Pass to Lucerne and follow Lake Lucerne to Altdorf. The Giessbach Falls and the Aare Gorge lie right along the way. Lakeside campsites offer pitches for both campervans and motorhomes.
Across roughly 550 km you cross some of Switzerland's most famous passes. Start in Andermatt, drive over the Furka Pass and Grimsel Pass into the Bernese Oberland, continue via the Susten Pass back to Andermatt, then head over the Gotthard Pass into Ticino to Bellinzona. The route is open from June to October. Panoramic roads with hairpin bends demand attention but reward with views of glaciers and high Alps.
This comprehensive route through Switzerland stretches across roughly 700 km and connects every part of the country. Start in Zurich, drive via St Gallen and Chur into the Engadin, cross the Julier Pass to Lugano, continue through the Valais to Geneva and return via Bern to Zurich. You pass through four language regions, visit the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen and experience the contrast between Mediterranean Ticino and Alpine Graubünden. Campsites along the entire route offer solid facilities.

Switzerland offers campsites in almost every type of landscape — from lakeshores in the Mittelland to Alpine valleys and Mediterranean-style sites in Ticino. Many facilities include pitches with electric hook-ups, fresh water supply and waste disposal stations for both motorhomes and campervans. In the mountains you often find smaller, nature-oriented sites, while campsites on the major lakes tend to offer more extensive amenities such as restaurants and beach access.
Switzerland does not have traditional toll booths on its motorways. Instead, all vehicles using the motorway network (marked with green signs) must display a valid vignette, which costs CHF 40 per year and is available at border crossings, petrol stations, and post offices. For motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, the heavy vehicle charge (LSVA) applies and is calculated based on distance, weight, and emissions. Speed limits on motorways are 120 km/h for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes and 100 km/h for those above. On open roads outside built-up areas, the limit is 80 km/h. Rest areas with facilities are well spaced along major routes like the A1 (Geneva–Zurich) and A2 (Basel–Chiasso). Mountain tunnels such as the Gotthard require headlights on at all times.

Top renter. All great.
Roman and his girlfriend were wonderful guests. They were thoughtful, respectful, and very responsible, and they took excellent care of the van. Communication was always easy and prompt, especially when any questions or minor issues arose. They were a pleasure to deal with! I highly recommend them!
Tout était parfait. Le propriétaire a toujours été très poli et est resté disponible tout au long de notre voyage pour nous aider et répondre à toutes nos questions. Je le recommande sans hésitation et je suis certain que je referai appel à lui à l’avenir.
