The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Switzerland's Gotthard Pass, first crossed by mule trains in the 13th century, remains one of Europe's most iconic alpine crossings and a must-drive route for any road trip enthusiast. From the shores of Lake Geneva to the peaks of the Bernese Oberland, this compact country packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a relatively small area. Zurich to Lugano is roughly 210 km, yet the journey takes you from German-speaking urban culture through the dramatic Gotthard tunnel and into the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Meanwhile, Bern to Interlaken covers just 56 km but delivers views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau — three of the most recognisable summits in the Alps. Switzerland's well-maintained roads wind through flower-filled valleys, past glacial lakes like Lake Lucerne and Lake Thun, and over high-altitude passes such as the Furka and Susten. The country's network of clearly signposted scenic routes makes it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome, with plenty of designated overnight parking areas along the way. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across Switzerland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles — from compact campervans perfect for mountain passes to larger motorhomes suited to lakeside touring. This peer-to-peer approach means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips from people who know Swiss roads best.
Switzerland welcomes travellers from late spring through to autumn, with June to September offering the longest days and open alpine passes. The Montreux Jazz Festival in July draws music lovers to the shores of Lake Geneva, while the Fête des Vignerons in Vevey celebrates the country's winemaking heritage. Most mountain passes, including the Furka and Susten, are open from June to October, making this the prime window for high-altitude touring by campervan. Shoulder months like May and early October bring quieter roads and lower prices through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, ideal for those who prefer a more relaxed pace. Book ahead for July and August to secure the best choice of motorhomes across Switzerland.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow the Golden Pass panoramic route from Lucerne to Montreux, covering around 220 km through the heart of Switzerland. Pass through Interlaken and the vineyards of Lavaux, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This route suits campervans well, with gentle gradients and well-equipped stopovers along Lake Thun and Lake Geneva.
Explore Switzerland's Italian-speaking south on this 180 km loop from Lugano through Locarno and the Verzasca Valley. Swim in the emerald waters of Lago di Vogorno and stroll the piazzas of Ascona. Compact campervans are ideal for the narrow lakeside roads, and campsites with full hook-ups dot the shoreline.
Tackle three legendary Swiss passes — Susten, Grimsel, and Furka — on this 350 km circuit starting from Meiringen. Marvel at the Rhône Glacier near the Furka summit and the turquoise Grimselsee reservoir. Open June to October, this route rewards motorhome travellers with dramatic switchbacks and well-placed rest areas in the Bernese Oberland.
Cross Switzerland's gentle midlands on this 400 km loop linking Bern, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, and Solothurn. Visit the medieval old town of Murten, the watchmaking museums of La Chaux-de-Fonds, and the Emmental cheese dairies. Flat, well-surfaced roads make this route comfortable for larger motorhomes, with numerous farm-stay campsites along the way.
Follow part of Switzerland's official Grand Tour on this 550 km route from Zurich to Geneva via Appenzell, St. Gallen, Chur, and Zermatt. Take in the Rhine Gorge, known as the Swiss Grand Canyon, and catch a glimpse of the Matterhorn. A mix of motorways and mountain roads suits both campervans and motorhomes, with charging points at major stops.
Experience all four of Switzerland's linguistic regions on this 700 km journey from Geneva through Bern, Lucerne, Bellinzona, and into the Engadin Valley near St. Moritz. Explore Graubünden's Romansh-speaking villages and the Julier Pass before looping back via Andermatt. This extended trip is best in a well-equipped campervan, with alpine campsites offering full facilities throughout the route.

Switzerland offers a well-organised network of campsites spread from the lakeshores of the west to the alpine valleys of the east. Whether you prefer a pitch beside Lake Geneva or a mountain setting in the Engadin, you will find sites with full hook-ups, modern sanitary blocks, and dedicated motorhome service points. Many campsites also welcome campervans with smaller pitches and flexible check-in. Here is a selection of well-regarded sites across the country.
Switzerland does not have traditional toll booths on its motorways. Instead, all vehicles using the motorway network (marked with green signs) must display a valid vignette, which costs CHF 40 per year and is available at border crossings, petrol stations, and post offices. For motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, the heavy vehicle charge (LSVA) applies and is calculated based on distance, weight, and emissions. Speed limits on motorways are 120 km/h for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes and 100 km/h for those above. On open roads outside built-up areas, the limit is 80 km/h. Rest areas with facilities are well spaced along major routes like the A1 (Geneva–Zurich) and A2 (Basel–Chiasso). Mountain tunnels such as the Gotthard require headlights on at all times.

Exceptional experience, I highly recommend it! Nuno is responsive, attentive and genuinely caring: he picked us up at the airport and provided us with a comprehensive list of must-see spots to explore the island, eat and sleep. Thanks to him, we discovered Madeira in a truly unique and authentic way. An unforgettable trip, made possible in large part by his invaluable help.
Great trip in this Vintage van! This is a old van, be aware of it, but everything work and the experience was really smooth. Pedro is very helpful and professional with his van. Strongly recommend for the vintage experience van life
Car is “hursh but fair”. Need a few km to grab a feeling but than you cruise. We went 900 km in n all kind of conditions and it was all good. All is in working order as described and not too long so you fit in a parking spot.
