The United Kingdom stretches across 94,058 square miles, from the chalk cliffs of Dover to the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands — a distance of roughly 970 miles that takes in four distinct nations and an extraordinary range of landscapes. England's Lake District National Park alone contains 16 lakes and over 150 peaks, while Scotland's North Coast 500 covers 516 miles of rugged coastline. Wales offers the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, and Northern Ireland is home to the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of around 40,000 basalt columns. From London to Edinburgh, the journey is approximately 400 miles, passing through rolling countryside, historic market towns, and moorland. The 186-mile stretch from Cardiff to the Pembrokeshire Coast crosses some of the most rewarding terrain for touring by road. Motorways and A-roads connect major cities, but the real joy of a UK road trip lies in the quieter B-roads that wind through villages, along coastlines, and over mountain passes. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for narrow country lanes or a larger motorhome for extended family trips, the variety of vehicles available makes it easy to match your plans to the right set of wheels. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the UK, giving you flexible pick-up points and a personal touch that makes starting your adventure simple and straightforward.
The UK welcomes road trippers year-round, though May to September offers the longest daylight hours and warmest temperatures — ideal for exploring coastal routes and highland trails. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lights up August with thousands of performances, while the Hay Festival in late May draws book lovers to the Welsh borders. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and golden landscapes, perfect for a more relaxed pace. Winter touring suits those drawn to cosy pubs and dramatic scenery without the summer crowds. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive rates outside peak months, and local owners can share tips on the best seasonal routes. Plan ahead for July and August to secure your preferred campervan.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km loop around Cornwall takes you from St Ives through Penzance and Land's End to Padstow, passing the clifftop Minack Theatre and the surf beaches of Newquay. Narrow coastal lanes suit a campervan perfectly, and seaside campsites are plentiful along the route.
This 280 km route explores the Lake District from Windermere through Keswick to Ullswater, taking in the Hardknott Pass and Castlerigg Stone Circle. Well-maintained roads make it accessible for a motorhome, though some mountain passes require extra care. Lakeside campsites offer memorable overnight stops throughout the route.
Covering around 400 km, this route runs from Cardiff through the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park to the island of Anglesey. Along the way you pass the coastal town of Aberystwyth and the imposing Caernarfon Castle. The mix of mountains, coastline and green valleys makes this a rewarding trip in a campervan.
This 450 km route connects Edinburgh and Glasgow with the Scottish Borders and the Fife coast. Highlights include Rosslyn Chapel, the ruins of Melrose Abbey and the picturesque fishing villages of East Neuk. Well-maintained A-roads make this route comfortable in a motorhome, with plenty of campsites spread across the Lowlands.
The legendary North Coast 500 covers around 800 km through the Scottish Highlands, starting and finishing in Inverness. The route follows dramatic coastline past Duncansby Head, through the Torridon mountains and along Loch Eriboll. Single-track roads with passing places define much of the journey — a true adventure in a campervan. Scotland's right to roam means wild camping is permitted in many areas along the way.
This 900 km route runs from Brighton on the south coast through the Cotswolds and the Peak District all the way to Edinburgh. Along the way you visit the university city of Oxford, medieval York with its famous Minster, and the rolling Cheviot Hills on the border. A mix of motorways and A-roads suits both campervans and motorhomes. Allow plenty of stops to take in the variety of landscapes across Great Britain.

The United Kingdom offers a wide choice of campsites, from coastal pitches in Cornwall and lakeside spots in the Lake District to woodland sites in the Scottish Highlands. Many provide electric hook-ups, waste disposal points, modern toilet and shower blocks, and Wi-Fi. Whether you are travelling in a campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find well-equipped sites with generous pitch sizes spread right across the UK.
The UK has no toll system on most motorways, though a few exceptions exist — the M6 Toll near Birmingham and the Dartford Crossing on the M25 charge per vehicle. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. Dual carriageways allow 60 mph for all vehicles. Road signs follow miles, not kilometres. Service stations appear regularly on major motorways, with fuel, food, and parking for larger vehicles. Many rural A-roads and B-roads are narrower, so plan your route if you are driving a wider motorhome. Low Emission Zones operate in London, Birmingham, and other cities — check before entering.
The campervan was in incredible condition. It is easy to drive and set up the beds/roof. One of our favourite holidays we’ve ever been on, travelling through northern Spain. The responsiveness and professionalism of the team made everything so easy. Would highly recommend
Very positive experience! Joël shared a lot of details to make the rental easy for us and was professional and kind the whole way through. Even with a small incident we had with the awning, Joël remained very helpful, we really appreciated his patience there.
Very pleasant for the most part. Great customer service at the station. Clean and well kept vehicle, a couple interior damages that were minor inconveniences but otherwise all good. I was disappointed by the lack of online customer support: I tried desperately to extend the rental period, after numerous emails and phone calls I was unsuccessful and only after I returned the vehicle did I get a response. Some form of communication would have helped. Besides the lack of online customer service I had a great experience and can vouch for Roadsurfer Salzburg.
Loved taking this around the island, and such a helpful host!
Alexandra and her friend were excellent guests. Communication was smooth and easy throughout the entire rental, and they took great care of the van, returning it in excellent condition. I would be happy to rent to them again and highly recommend them to any owner.
Great car and super owner. We had an amazing experience with André
