Why hire a campervan or motorhome in United Kingdom

United Kingdom — a country worth exploring

The United Kingdom stretches across 94,058 square miles, from the chalk cliffs of Dover to the northernmost tip of the Shetland Islands — a distance of roughly 970 miles that takes in four distinct nations and an extraordinary range of landscapes. England's Lake District National Park alone contains 16 lakes and over 150 peaks, while Scotland's North Coast 500 covers 516 miles of rugged coastline. Wales offers the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia, and Northern Ireland is home to the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site made up of around 40,000 basalt columns. From London to Edinburgh, the journey is approximately 400 miles, passing through rolling countryside, historic market towns, and moorland. The 186-mile stretch from Cardiff to the Pembrokeshire Coast crosses some of the most rewarding terrain for touring by road. Motorways and A-roads connect major cities, but the real joy of a UK road trip lies in the quieter B-roads that wind through villages, along coastlines, and over mountain passes. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for narrow country lanes or a larger motorhome for extended family trips, the variety of vehicles available makes it easy to match your plans to the right set of wheels. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the UK, giving you flexible pick-up points and a personal touch that makes starting your adventure simple and straightforward.

Best time to visit

The UK welcomes road trippers year-round, though May to September offers the longest daylight hours and warmest temperatures — ideal for exploring coastal routes and highland trails. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lights up August with thousands of performances, while the Hay Festival in late May draws book lovers to the Welsh borders. Spring and autumn bring quieter roads and golden landscapes, perfect for a more relaxed pace. Winter touring suits those drawn to cosy pubs and dramatic scenery without the summer crowds. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive rates outside peak months, and local owners can share tips on the best seasonal routes. Plan ahead for July and August to secure your preferred campervan.

The best road trips in United Kingdom

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Jurassic Coast Trail

250 km 3–6 days

Follow 250 km of England's southern coastline from Exmouth to Studland Bay, passing through Lyme Regis and the natural arch at Durdle Door. This route suits a campervan perfectly, with compact coastal car parks and well-placed campsites along the Dorset and Devon shores. Fossil hunting and seaside fish and chips are part of the deal.

The Lake District Loop

280 km 3–6 days

A 280 km circuit through England's Lake District starting and ending in Kendal, taking in Windermere, Keswick, and Buttermere. Mountain passes like Honister and Kirkstone add drama to the drive. Campsites with fell views are plentiful, and the route works well for both campervans and motorhomes on the main roads.

The Welsh Coastal Way

400 km 5–8 days

Covering around 400 km from Llandudno to St Davids, this route traces the Welsh coastline through Harlech, Aberystwyth, and New Quay. Expect sandy beaches, castle ruins, and dolphin-watching opportunities in Cardigan Bay. Motorhome-friendly campsites dot the route, and the roads are well-maintained throughout.

The Scottish Borders and Highlands Gateway

450 km 5–8 days

A 450 km route from Edinburgh through the Scottish Borders to Inverness, passing Melrose Abbey, the Cairngorms National Park, and Loch Ness. The A9 is the main artery north, with plenty of laybys and rest stops. This is a great introduction to Scotland for those hiring a campervan for the first time in the UK.

The North Coast 500

830 km 7–11 days

Scotland's legendary 830 km loop starts and ends in Inverness, circling the northern Highlands through Durness, John o' Groats, and Applecross. Single-track roads with passing places are part of the charm. A motorhome handles the longer stretches comfortably, though a campervan offers more flexibility on narrower sections. Wild camping is permitted in Scotland.

The Grand UK Tour

900 km 10–15 days

This 900 km route connects London, the Cotswolds, Snowdonia, the Lake District, Edinburgh, and York in one sweeping journey through the UK. Mix motorways for efficiency with scenic detours through the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome in London and return it in the same city after a full loop of England, Wales, and Scotland.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in United Kingdom

The UK has no toll system on most motorways, though a few exceptions exist — the M6 Toll near Birmingham and the Dartford Crossing on the M25 charge per vehicle. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.05 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. Dual carriageways allow 60 mph for all vehicles. Road signs follow miles, not kilometres. Service stations appear regularly on major motorways, with fuel, food, and parking for larger vehicles. Many rural A-roads and B-roads are narrower, so plan your route if you are driving a wider motorhome. Low Emission Zones operate in London, Birmingham, and other cities — check before entering.

Renting Gabriel’s van was honestly one of the best parts of my trip. The van has so much personality and charm — it felt cozy, reliable, and full of good energy from the moment I picked it up. I loved waking up in different places, making coffee with amazing views, and having the freedom to go wherever I wanted.Gabriel was amazing as well. Super kind, easygoing, and always available if I needed anything. He explained everything clearly and made me feel comfortable straight away. This isn’t just a camper van, it’s an experience. You can tell it has been loved and cared for. I left with beautiful memories and would absolutely rent it again without hesitation.Thank you Gabriel for sharing your little home on wheels with me :)

Great experience renting with a child and a dog. Carina was an amazing host—always in touch and very supportive. She even met us before the payment to check if our larger car seat would fit the Isofix, and she welcomed our dog for free, even giving us a nice blanket for him.The camper was in good condition. The only downside was having just one gas bottle instead of the usual two. It ran out unexpectedly at night, and since gas bottles were not available at the gas stations along our way, we couldn't get a replacement. As a result, we spent the last 2.5 days of our trip without heating or the stove. Other than that, everything was perfect. Highly recommended!
