Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Greece

Greece — a country worth exploring

Greece stretches across over 6,000 islands and islets, though only around 230 are inhabited, making it one of Europe's most geographically diverse countries for a road trip. On the mainland, the Vikos Gorge in Epirus holds a Guinness record as one of the deepest gorges relative to its width, plunging 490 metres into the Pindus Mountains. From Athens to Thessaloniki, the country's two largest cities, the drive covers roughly 500 km along the E75 motorway, passing through the fertile plains of Thessaly. Head south from Athens and within 130 km you reach Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, with its Palamidi Fortress perched above the harbour. The Peloponnese peninsula offers ancient Olympia, the clifftop monasteries of Meteora rise in central Greece, and the winding roads of the Mani Peninsula reward those who enjoy slow, scenic driving. Coastal routes hug the Aegean and Ionian shorelines, while mountain passes through the Pindus range suit travellers looking for quieter stretches. Greece is well suited to campervan travel, with a mix of seaside stops and highland routes that keep every day different. A motorhome gives you the space to settle into longer stays at archaeological sites or beach towns. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the country, choosing from a wide range of vehicles — from compact campervans to fully equipped family setups — all with the personal touch that peer-to-peer sharing brings.

Best time to visit

Greece welcomes campervan travellers from April through to October, with each month offering something distinct. Spring is ideal for exploring archaeological sites like Delphi and Olympia in comfortable temperatures, while the Athens Epidaurus Festival runs from June to August with open-air performances at the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus. September and October bring the grape harvest season across the Peloponnese, perfect for food-focused road trips. Summer is the most popular period, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best choice of vehicles. Shoulder months like May and October offer quieter roads and widely available campsite pitches across the mainland.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Greece

Greece's motorway network connects major cities via well-maintained toll roads. The main routes — the A1 (Athens to Thessaloniki), A2 (Egnatia Odos across northern Greece), and A7 (Moreas Motorway in the Peloponnese) — all charge tolls, payable in cash or by card at booths. Motorhomes and campervans over 3.5 tonnes may face higher toll categories. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are typically 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. Rest areas with fuel stations appear regularly along major routes. Mountain sections, particularly through the Pindus range, include tunnels and steep gradients — check your vehicle height before entering.

incredibly friendly and took the time to explain how everything worked, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable from the start. The camper van was a pleasure to drive and came fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. He was also available 24/7 to help with any questions and recommended some amazing routes around the island. As first-time camper van travellers, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience, and we would absolutely do it again. It was truly an unforgettable adventure.

The camper was exactly as expected, it was clean and everything worked as it should. It drove well and was surprisingly economical considering its size. The booking process was easy but collection gave a few challenges. The renters location is wrong in the listing as there are two Sauzets in south west France. Coupled with the renter mistakenly not delivering the camper to the correct address meant we were a day late starting our trip. A refund for the missing day was immediately agreed. In all an easy experience once the pickup location was cleared up.
