Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Spain

Spain — a country worth exploring

Spain's Camino de Santiago stretches over 800 kilometres across the north of the country, drawing travellers from around the world to one of Europe's most iconic pilgrimage routes. Beyond this famous trail, the country offers an extraordinary range of landscapes for road trips — from the rugged cliffs of the Costa Brava to the sun-drenched plains of Andalusia, and from the green valleys of Asturias to the volcanic terrain of the Canary Islands. Madrid to Barcelona covers roughly 620 kilometres, while Seville to Granada is a manageable 250-kilometre drive through olive groves and whitewashed villages. Spain's road network is modern and well-maintained, making it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome. Coastal routes wind past fishing villages and sandy coves, while inland roads lead to historic cities like Toledo, Salamanca, and Córdoba, each with centuries of heritage on display. The Picos de Europa mountain range in the north provides dramatic scenery and well-equipped campsites, and the Ebro Delta on the Mediterranean coast is a paradise for birdwatchers. With Yescapa, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners spread across Spain, choosing from a wide selection of campervans and motorhomes that suit your group size and travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and genuine local tips to help you make the most of every stop.

Best time to visit

Spain welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring (April to June) is ideal for a campervan trip, with comfortable temperatures and festivals like Seville's Feria de Abril lighting up the south. Autumn brings the grape harvest season in La Rioja, perfect for food-loving road trippers. Summer is the most popular period along the coasts, so booking your Yescapa vehicle early ensures the best choice. Winter suits those heading to the Canary Islands or exploring Andalusia's mild climate. Peer-to-peer hire through Yescapa often means better rates outside peak months, giving you flexibility to plan a Spain road trip on your terms.

The best road trips in Spain

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The White Villages Route

280 km 3–6 days

Wind through Andalusia's famous pueblos blancos, starting in Ronda and looping through Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema, and Arcos de la Frontera. This 280 km route suits campervans perfectly, with narrow mountain roads offering views over the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Campsites along the way have full hook-ups and shaded pitches.

The Costa Brava Discovery

250 km 3–6 days

Explore 250 km of Catalonia's Mediterranean coastline from Blanes to Portbou, passing through Tossa de Mar, Begur, and the Dalí Museum in Figueres. Sandy coves alternate with rocky headlands, and well-equipped campsites sit close to the shore. A motorhome-friendly route with easy parking at most stops along the Spanish coast.

The Green Spain Trail

450 km 5–8 days

Follow 450 km along Spain's northern coast from Bilbao to Santiago de Compostela, through the lush regions of Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia. Stop at Santander, the Picos de Europa, Oviedo, and Lugo's Roman walls. This campervan route passes through green hills, fishing ports, and some of the country's finest seafood towns.

The Moorish Heritage Loop

400 km 5–8 days

A 400 km circuit through Andalusia connecting Seville, Córdoba, Jaén, and Granada — four cities shaped by centuries of Moorish influence. Visit the Alhambra, the Mezquita, and the Alcázar of Seville. Campsites near each city offer motorhome pitches with electricity and water. Flat roads and warm weather make this a comfortable year-round drive across Spain.

The Mediterranean Coast Run

600 km 7–11 days

Cover 600 km from Valencia to Almería along Spain's southeastern coast. Pass through Alicante, Murcia, and the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, with stops at the Elche palm groves and Cartagena's Roman theatre. Campervan-friendly campsites line the coast, many with direct beach access. A mix of urban culture and quiet coastal stretches makes this route endlessly varied.

The Grand Pyrenees Crossing

700 km 8–15 days

Traverse 700 km from the Basque Country to Catalonia along the Spanish side of the Pyrenees. Key stops include San Sebastián, Pamplona, the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Ainsa, and the Vall de Boí with its Romanesque churches. Mountain campsites offer fresh air and full facilities. A motorhome adventure through some of Spain's most dramatic mountain scenery.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Spain

Spain has an extensive motorway network, with many routes operating as toll roads (autopistas) alongside free alternatives (autovías). Tolls can be paid at booths by card or cash, and electronic systems like Via-T speed up the process. Motorhomes under 3,500 kg follow standard car speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with services appear regularly along major routes. Mountain passes in the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada may have gradient restrictions for larger vehicles, so checking your route in advance is recommended.

We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.

We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.

We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
