Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Asturias

Asturias — a region worth exploring

Asturias is home to the Picos de Europa, one of Europe's oldest national parks, where peaks rise above 2,600 metres just 20 km from the Cantabrian Sea. This compact region in northern Spain packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a relatively small area — the drive from the coastal city of Gijón to the mountain town of Cangas de Onís covers just 85 km, yet the scenery shifts from sandy beaches to deep river gorges. Along the coast, you can explore the Jurassic Museum of Asturias near Colunga, walk the dramatic cliffs at Cabo de Peñas, or visit the pre-Romanesque churches of Oviedo, a UNESCO World Heritage collection. Inland, the Senda del Oso cycling trail follows a disused railway through bear country, and the Covadonga Lakes sit at over 1,000 metres with views across the national park. From Llanes in the east to Tapia de Casariego in the west, the distance is roughly 280 km along the coast, with dozens of small fishing villages and cider towns in between. The roads are well-maintained but often winding, making a campervan the ideal way to travel at your own pace and stop wherever the landscape calls. Motorhome travellers will find dedicated service areas dotted along the main routes. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Asturias, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

Asturias enjoys a mild, green climate year-round, making it a great destination outside the typical Mediterranean calendar. June to September offers the warmest weather for coastal drives and mountain hikes. The Descenso Internacional del Sella, a famous canoe race held every August, draws crowds to the Sella River between Arriondas and Ribadesella. In autumn, cider season peaks and the Amagüestu harvest festivals bring local food and music to villages across Asturias. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means more availability and competitive peer-to-peer prices, with quieter roads and campsites to enjoy at a relaxed pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Asturias

Most roads in Asturias are toll-free, including the A-8 motorway that runs along the coast. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3,500 kg match standard car limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads. Vehicles over 3,500 kg are limited to 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on secondary roads. The AS-series regional roads are well-surfaced but often narrow and winding through mountain valleys, so allow extra time. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A-8 and A-66 corridors. Keep headlights on in tunnels — Asturias has many due to its mountainous terrain.
