Germany's Romantic Road stretches 460 kilometres from Würzburg to Füssen, linking medieval towns, baroque churches, and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle — one of Europe's most photographed landmarks. The country offers an extraordinary range of landscapes for road trips: the North Sea and Baltic coastlines in the north, the dense woodlands of the Black Forest in the south-west, and the towering peaks of the Bavarian Alps along the Austrian border. From Hamburg to Munich is roughly 790 km, while Berlin to Cologne covers about 575 km, giving you a sense of the distances involved when planning a cross-country tour. Germany's well-maintained Autobahn network makes long drives comfortable, and smaller scenic routes — like the Deutsche Alleenstraße lined with ancient trees — reward slower exploration in a campervan. Overnight parking options are plentiful, with dedicated Stellplätze (motorhome stopovers) found in nearly every town. Whether you want to cruise along the Moselle Valley vineyards, explore the Wadden Sea mudflats, or hike through Saxon Switzerland National Park, a campervan gives you the flexibility to combine it all. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across the country — from compact vans ideal for city-hopping to fully equipped motorhomes ready for alpine adventures.
Germany is a rewarding destination from spring right through to the Christmas markets in December. May and June bring warm days and long daylight hours — ideal for driving the Baltic coast or exploring the Rhine Valley. The Oktoberfest in Munich (mid-September to early October) is a highlight worth planning around, while the Kieler Woche sailing festival in late June draws crowds to the north. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your vehicle on Yescapa ahead of time helps you secure the best choice and price from local owners. Autumn colours in the Black Forest and Bavarian Alps make October a fantastic month for motorhome touring, with quieter roads and cooler temperatures.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Along the Baltic Sea from Lübeck-Travemünde to Stralsund, this 200 km route takes you past white sandy beaches and seaside resorts like Kühlungsborn and Warnemünde. The flat coastal road suits motorhomes of all sizes. In Stralsund, the German Oceanographic Museum awaits.
This 400 km loop starts in Koblenz, follows the Moselle through Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues to Trier, then returns via the Rhine Valley past the Loreley rock. Vineyards, castle ruins, and riverside campervan stopovers line the route. A perfect Germany trip for wine lovers.
From Würzburg to Füssen, this 260 km route passes through Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbühl. Medieval old towns and Neuschwanstein Castle at the southern end make it a classic Germany road trip. Campervan stopovers are available in nearly every town along the way.
From Freiburg im Breisgau through the Black Forest via the Schwarzwaldhochstraße to Konstanz on Lake Constance — 450 km of natural beauty. Titisee, Triberg with its waterfalls, and the flower island of Mainau are highlights. Well-maintained roads make this route suitable for larger motorhomes too.
The German Alpine Road stretches 600 km from Lindau on Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden at the Königssee. Along the way, you pass through Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and past the Chiemsee. Mountain passes, alpine meadows, and panoramic roads define this southern Germany route. Especially recommended for campervans and compact vehicles.
From the island of Sylt on the North Sea to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Alps — roughly 750 km across Germany. Along the way, you experience Hamburg, the Lüneburg Heath, Nuremberg, and the Alpine foothills. This tour showcases the full diversity of the country. Numerous stopovers and campsites along the route make it ideal for an extended motorhome journey.

Germany offers a dense network of campsites for every preference — from pitches right on the North Sea coast to woodland sites in the centre of the country and alpine campsites with mountain views. Most are equipped with electric hook-ups, sanitary facilities, and service points for motorhomes and campervans. Many also provide Wi-Fi, bakery delivery services, and playgrounds.
Germany's Autobahn network is famous for its sections without speed limits, but motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits where posted. Most Autobahns are toll-free for vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, making long-distance travel very affordable. An environmental sticker (Umweltplakette) is required to enter low-emission zones in most city centres — you can order one online before your trip. Rest areas (Raststätten) with fuel, food, and parking appear regularly, and many include dedicated spaces for larger vehicles.
Sébastien was very patient, precise and extremely helpful. He explained everything to us very clearly, which was especially appreciated as it was our first motorhome experience. The vehicle was almost new, very clean and in excellent condition. We really enjoyed the experience and hope to do it again soon. Thank you, Sébastien!
Coche súper flexible y súper bonito, y la tienda de campaña es muy cómoda.
Very good time using the van in the dolomites. Easy to drive and a lot of good, well thoughts features inside the van. The van was available few hours later than expected due to a clutch replacement but Claudio was kind to refund us for the time we didn't use the van.
Alejandro and his girlfriend were the perfect tenants, just the kind everyone hopes for. They were friendly, communication was easy and everything was quickly agreed upon, and they returned the van in perfect condition. I hope we meet again someday, if not in Slovenia, then in Barcelona :) Best regards and all the best for the future, Maja and Gašper
We spent a wonderful week traveling through the Basque Country, Asturias, and Cantabria in Edurne’s camper. Communication with Edurne was excellent—she answered all our questions well in advance of the trip. The van itself was perfect. Driving the T4 is a real pleasure, and the camper is thoughtfully equipped with kitchen essentials, curtains, blankets, and everything you need for a safe trip. We wholeheartedly recommend the van. Thank you for everything, Edurne!
