Rheinland-Pfalz is home to the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, where over 40 castles line a 65-kilometre stretch of river between Koblenz and Bingen. This western German state blends dramatic river gorges, rolling vineyards, and ancient Roman heritage into a landscape that feels tailor-made for life on the road. The Eifel region to the north features volcanic crater lakes known as Maare, while the Pfälzerwald — Germany's largest contiguous forest — stretches across the south. From Trier, the country's oldest city founded by the Romans in 16 BC, to the Deutsche Weinstraße running 85 kilometres through the Palatinate wine country, every turn reveals something worth stopping for. Mainz, the state capital on the Rhine, is just 130 kilometres from Trier, making it easy to connect major highlights in a few days of driving. The Moselle Valley offers winding roads flanked by steep terraced vineyards, ideal for slow-paced campervan touring. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating narrow valley roads or a larger motorhome for extended family trips, Yescapa connects you with local owners across Rheinland-Pfalz who share their vehicles peer-to-peer. Hiring directly from someone nearby means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips on the best routes and overnight spots throughout the region.
Rheinland-Pfalz is a rewarding destination from spring through autumn. May and June bring warm days perfect for driving the Moselle Valley as vineyards turn green, and the Rhein in Flammen fireworks festival lights up the river in several locations between May and September. Autumn is equally special — the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim, the world's largest wine festival, takes place each September. Campsites along the Rhine and Moselle are open from April to October, with the widest availability in the shoulder months. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means better peer-to-peer rates and quieter roads across Rheinland-Pfalz.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Drive from Bingen along the Rhine through Bacharach and Sankt Goar to Koblenz, then continue through the Lahn valley to Limburg. The roughly 350-kilometre route links UNESCO heritage with half-timbered towns. The Loreley rock near Sankt Goar and the Marksburg near Braubach are essential stops. Riverside pitches offer direct views of the water.
This 500-kilometre loop connects the highlights of Rhineland-Palatinate: start in Mainz, head through Worms and Speyer with its Romanesque cathedral into the southern Palatinate, then cross the Palatinate Forest to Kaiserslautern and continue via Idar-Oberstein to Trier. The tour balances culture, nature and wine – ideal for a week in a campervan.
Follow the German Wine Route from Bockenheim to Schweigen-Rechtenbach through Rhineland-Palatinate. Over roughly 120 kilometres you pass Deidesheim, Bad Dürkheim and Hambach Castle. Wineries welcome visitors for tastings, and pitches among the vineyards make this campervan tour wonderfully relaxed.
Over roughly 600 kilometres you cross the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate: from Trier along the Moselle to Koblenz, through the Eifel to the Nürburgring, into the Ahr valley at Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, then across the Hunsrück and Palatinate Forest back to Speyer. The tour combines river valleys, uplands and wine regions. Pitches for motorhomes and campervans are plentiful along the way.
Start in Koblenz and follow the Moselle's famous bends through Cochem and Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel-Kues. The roughly 180-kilometre route takes you past steep vineyards and the Reichsburg Cochem. Roads are well maintained and comfortable for motorhome travel throughout Rhineland-Palatinate.
Explore the volcanic Eifel in Rhineland-Palatinate over roughly 280 kilometres. From Mayen head to the Laacher See, then on through Daun with its maar lakes to Gerolstein. Pitches with views of crater lakes await along the way. The route is ideal for a campervan and offers pure nature away from the cities.

Rhineland-Palatinate offers campsites in a wide range of settings – from the banks of the Moselle to the vineyards of the Palatinate and the forests of the Eifel. Many sites provide pitches for motorhomes and campervans with electric hook-ups, fresh water and waste disposal. Whether right by the river or among the vines, Rhineland-Palatinate has a site to suit every travel style.
German motorways (Autobahnen) in Rheinland-Pfalz are toll-free for all vehicles, including motorhomes. The A61 and A48 are the main north–south and east–west routes through the region. While some Autobahn sections have no speed limit for cars, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 120 km/h on unrestricted stretches. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes. Many scenic roads through the Moselle and Rhine valleys are two-lane Bundesstraßen — well maintained but narrower, so allow extra time if driving a larger vehicle.
Feeling right at home Traveling across Portugal with Koda was a perfect, unique, and wonderful experience ☺️ Carina and Rafaela met us right at the airport and explained everything about the van—covering every detail clearly and effectively. We had never taken an off-the-cuff trip like this before; without any set plans, we drove all the way to Sagres, navigating easily through narrow roads, campsites, and stunning beaches 😍 Its compact size makes it comfortable to drive almost immediately, allowing for effortless maneuvering even on narrow roads, whether driving uphill or on light off-road terrain. The van is fully equipped: it has kitchenware, a sink, a convenient handheld shower, and even a solar shower, plus two camping chairs and an easy-to-assemble table. The bed is incredibly comfortable, and when not in use, it converts into a small bench. It was easy and delightful to feel right at home during this vacation; we can’t wait to return to Portugal to explore the north with Koda 🧡
Absolute pleasure to host this group of three! Everything went completely smoothly from pickup to return. They treated the camper with great respect, followed all guidelines, and kept in touch throughout the trip. Reliable, responsible, and friendly—10/10 renters, highly recommended to any owner on Yescapa!
Carlos was available and attentive throughout the entire process. We received a nearly new vehicle—clean, tidy, and fully equipped with everything needed for a camping trip for three people.
Obrigada, Tiago!
