Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Rhineland-Palatinate

Rhineland-Palatinate — a region worth exploring

Rheinland-Pfalz is home to the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley, where over 40 castles line a 65-kilometre stretch of river between Koblenz and Bingen. This western German state blends dramatic river gorges, rolling vineyards, and ancient Roman heritage into a landscape that feels tailor-made for life on the road. The Eifel region to the north features volcanic crater lakes known as Maare, while the Pfälzerwald — Germany's largest contiguous forest — stretches across the south. From Trier, the country's oldest city founded by the Romans in 16 BC, to the Deutsche Weinstraße running 85 kilometres through the Palatinate wine country, every turn reveals something worth stopping for. Mainz, the state capital on the Rhine, is just 130 kilometres from Trier, making it easy to connect major highlights in a few days of driving. The Moselle Valley offers winding roads flanked by steep terraced vineyards, ideal for slow-paced campervan touring. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating narrow valley roads or a larger motorhome for extended family trips, Yescapa connects you with local owners across Rheinland-Pfalz who share their vehicles peer-to-peer. Hiring directly from someone nearby means more choice, competitive pricing, and personal tips on the best routes and overnight spots throughout the region.

Best time to visit

Rheinland-Pfalz is a rewarding destination from spring through autumn. May and June bring warm days perfect for driving the Moselle Valley as vineyards turn green, and the Rhein in Flammen fireworks festival lights up the river in several locations between May and September. Autumn is equally special — the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim, the world's largest wine festival, takes place each September. Campsites along the Rhine and Moselle are open from April to October, with the widest availability in the shoulder months. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means better peer-to-peer rates and quieter roads across Rheinland-Pfalz.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Rhineland-Palatinate

German motorways (Autobahnen) in Rheinland-Pfalz are toll-free for all vehicles, including motorhomes. The A61 and A48 are the main north–south and east–west routes through the region. While some Autobahn sections have no speed limit for cars, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 120 km/h on unrestricted stretches. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes. Many scenic roads through the Moselle and Rhine valleys are two-lane Bundesstraßen — well maintained but narrower, so allow extra time if driving a larger vehicle.

It was our 1st time in a Caravan, and we feel very fortunate that we have done it with Jeremy & Annabella, their Caravan is exactly as decribed in the pictures, in a perfect mechanical situation, we had 0 problens through the whole joirney, and we were 6 people in that Caravan, I have no doubt that we will reserve it again in the future. The check in and out went completely smoove with Jeremy, you can feel free to trust them!

Great, responsible, and responsive owner. Van is equipped as advertised. The refrigerator loses its battery fast when van is turned off, so it caused some issues overnight in hot weather. Cars engine is a bit weak when driving uphill, but never caused any real issues. Great choice if you want a small van for exploring towns and coast of Andalusia.

Absolutely recommended renter. Really kind and nice people. They gave back the van clean in and out, so big respect to you guys. Thanks for your rent.

Very nice camper that has a lot of comfort for travelling Mallorca. One star less due toSlow/difficult communication with the owner, who only started to confirm our messages/questions 1 day before the actual start of the trip, The fact that the agreed pick-up time was not respected (and not communicated before we arrived on the airport) and got delayed with 1,5 h.Do know that towels and linnen are available in the camper (or they were at least for us), so no need to bring them.

Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!

Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
