Sweden's Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi has been rebuilt from scratch every winter since 1989, using around 2,500 tonnes of ice harvested from the Torne River. This remarkable tradition is just one reason to explore the country by road. From the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan in Stockholm to the windswept shores of Gotland, Sweden offers an extraordinary range of landscapes across its 1,572 km length from Malmö in the south to Karesuando in the far north. The drive from Gothenburg to Stockholm covers roughly 470 km along well-maintained motorways, while the route from Stockholm north to Luleå stretches around 920 km through dense boreal forests and past countless lakes. Sweden's geography is ideal for campervan travel — wide, uncrowded roads wind through rolling farmland in Skåne, along the rocky Bohuslän archipelago coast, and up into the mountainous terrain of Swedish Lapland. The country's Right of Public Access, known as Allemansrätten, gives travellers the freedom to wild camp responsibly in most natural areas, making a motorhome trip here uniquely flexible. Whether you want to visit the Kosterhavet National Park, hike in Abisko, or explore the glassworks of Småland, there is always something to discover. Through Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Sweden, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles suited to your group size and travel plans.
Sweden is wonderful to explore from late May through September, when long daylight hours — including the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle in June — make for extended days on the road. The Midsommar celebrations in late June are a quintessentially Swedish experience, with maypole dancing and festivities across the country. August brings the Malmöfestivalen, a free open-air cultural event in the south. Summer is the most popular season for campervan hire, so booking ahead on Yescapa is a good idea to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. Shoulder months like May and September offer quieter roads and pleasant conditions for touring Sweden's lakes and forests.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 250 km route hugs Sweden's west coast from Gothenburg north through Marstrand, Smögen, and Fjällbacka. Expect fishing villages, granite islands, and excellent seafood. Three to six days lets you enjoy coastal walks and island-hopping by ferry — ideal for a campervan.
A 200 km loop around Lake Siljan in Dalarna, passing through Mora, Rättvik, and Leksand. This three- to five-day route showcases traditional red wooden villages, Midsommar heritage, and lakeside campsites. Perfect for a relaxed motorhome trip through the heart of Sweden.
Covering 450 km over five to eight days, this route follows the Göta Canal from Gothenburg to Söderköping, passing Vänern and Vättern — Sweden's two largest lakes. Stop at Vadstena's medieval castle and Mariestad's harbour. Well-suited to both campervans and motorhomes.
This 400 km route through Sweden's Småland region takes five to eight days, visiting the Glasriket glassworks at Kosta and Orrefors, the cathedral town of Växjö, and Astrid Lindgren's World in Vimmerby. Quiet forest roads and lakeside pitches make it a great campervan journey.
A 700 km adventure over seven to eleven days along Sweden's east coast, from Malmö through Kalmar and its castle, past Västervik, and up to Stockholm. Coastal campsites are plentiful, and the route suits motorhomes well, with flat terrain and easy driving throughout.
Spanning 900 km over ten to fifteen days, this route heads from Luleå into Swedish Lapland, through Jokkmokk, Gällivare, and up to Abisko National Park. Experience the midnight sun, Sámi culture, and vast mountain scenery. A campervan or motorhome gives you true freedom here.

Sweden offers a wide network of campsites spread from the southern coastline to the Arctic north, catering to both campervans and motorhomes. Many sites provide full-service pitches with electrical hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, showers, and kitchen facilities. Coastal sites along the west and east coasts are popular in summer, while inland and northern campsites give access to forests, lakes, and mountain landscapes across Sweden.
Sweden's motorways are toll-free, with the exception of a few bridges and tunnels such as the Öresund Bridge and the Svinesund Bridge. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are generally 80 km/h on main roads and 90 km/h on motorways, while lighter campervans follow standard car limits of up to 110 or 120 km/h. Swedish roads are well maintained and clearly signposted, with frequent rest areas offering parking, toilets, and waste disposal points. In northern Sweden, be aware that distances between services can be longer, so plan fuel stops accordingly.
