Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Canada

Canada — a country worth exploring

Canada's Trans-Canada Highway stretches 7,821 kilometres from St. John's in Newfoundland to Victoria in British Columbia, making it one of the longest national highways on the planet. This vast country rewards those who explore it at their own pace, whether you're drawn to the turquoise waters of Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains, the historic ramparts of Old Québec City, or the dramatic tidal flats of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. From Vancouver to Halifax, the distance spans roughly 5,800 kilometres — a journey that reveals prairies, boreal forests, Great Lakes shorelines, and Atlantic coastline along the way. Toronto to Montréal is a manageable 540-kilometre drive, perfect for a weekend escape combining urban culture with countryside charm. Canada's national and provincial parks are exceptionally well set up for campervan and motorhome travellers, with serviced pitches, dump stations, and scenic pullover spots built into the road network. Coastal routes in the Maritimes and mountain passes through the Rockies offer completely different but equally memorable driving experiences. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the country — from Calgary and Vancouver to Toronto and beyond — giving you the flexibility to start your road trip wherever suits you best.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in Canada runs from late May through to October, when roads are fully open and campgrounds operate at full capacity. June to August brings the warmest conditions, ideal for exploring the Rockies or the Atlantic coast. The Calgary Stampede in July is a world-famous event worth planning around if you're heading west. September and early October reward travellers with autumn colours, particularly along Québec's Route des Navigateurs. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform during shoulder months like May or September often means better availability and more competitive pricing from local owners.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Canada

Canada's major highways are toll-free in most provinces, though some bridges and sections in Ontario and the Maritimes do charge tolls — Highway 407 near Toronto is a notable example, using electronic billing. Speed limits for motorhomes generally match standard vehicle limits at 100–110 km/h on highways, but always check provincial signage as limits vary. Rest areas with free parking, toilets, and picnic tables are well spaced along the Trans-Canada Highway. Larger motorhomes should note height restrictions on certain urban underpasses and weight limits on older bridges in rural areas.

Overall, the owner was very nice and the vehicle was good. Alain was available over WhatsApp with very good communication in English. He provided lots of useful information. The vehicle was good, it drove well considering it is an older vehicle. The gear changing was a bit difficult sometimes but manageable. Changing between bed setup and extra seat was reasonably fast and easy. The fridge was very good. The toilet was OK but took a lot of space.
