Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Prairies

Prairies — a region worth exploring

The Canadian Prairies stretch across three provinces — Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta — covering roughly 1.78 million square kilometres of grasslands, rolling hills, and big open skies. From Winnipeg to Calgary, a drive of approximately 1,330 km along the Trans-Canada Highway, the landscape shifts from the flat wheat fields of Manitoba through Saskatchewan's vast plains to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, you can explore Riding Mountain National Park, where boreal forest meets prairie grassland, or stop at Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks, Alberta, home to one of the world's richest fossil beds. Head north from Saskatoon to Prince Albert National Park — about 230 km — and discover free-roaming bison herds and pristine lakes. The Prairies also hold cultural landmarks like the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller and The Forks in Winnipeg, a historic meeting place at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. Driving a campervan or motorhome through the Prairies is wonderfully straightforward: roads are wide, well-maintained, and rarely congested. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the Prairies, choosing from a range of vehicles to match your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for a weekend escape or a fully equipped motorhome for a longer adventure, peer-to-peer sharing means competitive prices and a personal touch that makes your trip feel like home from the start.

Best time to visit

The best time to hire a campervan in the Prairies is from June to September, when long daylight hours and warm temperatures make camping a real pleasure. July brings the Calgary Stampede, a world-famous rodeo and festival that draws visitors from across the globe, while August sees Folklorama in Winnipeg, one of the largest multicultural festivals in Canada. Most provincial park campgrounds in the Prairies open from mid-May through to early October, so plan accordingly. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of June or September often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing on motorhome hire across the region.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Prairies

Highways across the Prairies are toll-free, so you can drive without worrying about extra charges. Speed limits on major highways typically sit at 110 km/h for cars, though motorhomes and larger campervans should check provincial signage as some stretches reduce the limit to 100 km/h for heavier vehicles. The Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) is the main east–west corridor, well maintained with regular rest stops and fuel stations. In Alberta, Highway 2 connects Calgary and Edmonton with divided dual carriageway. Always carry extra fuel on quieter rural routes in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as distances between service stations can be significant.
