Portugal's coastline stretches over 1,794 kilometres from the rugged cliffs of the Algarve to the wild Atlantic beaches of the Minho region, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore on four wheels. Start in Lisbon, where the iconic Belém Tower stands at the edge of the Tagus estuary, then head 300 km south to Cape St Vincent, the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe. From Porto, the Douro Valley — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards — is just 120 km east along the river. Further north, Peneda-Gerês National Park offers granite peaks, ancient oak forests and winding mountain roads that reward patient drivers. Along the central Silver Coast, the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the surf capital of Nazaré sit barely 20 km apart, giving you culture and ocean in a single afternoon. Portugal's compact size means you can cross the country in a few hours, yet every region feels distinct — from the cork-oak plains of the Alentejo to the lush green valleys of the Azores. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners spread across the country, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that suit your group size and travel style. Whether you want a compact campervan for coastal lanes or a fully equipped motorhome for a family adventure, peer-to-peer sharing keeps costs fair and puts local knowledge at your fingertips.
Portugal welcomes road trippers comfortably from April through October. Spring is ideal for the Algarve's wildflower season, while June brings Lisbon's Festas de Santo António — a city-wide celebration with parades, grilled sardines and street music. September and October offer warm days along the Silver Coast with quieter campsites and easier bookings. Summer remains the most popular season, so reserving your campervan early through Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles at competitive peer-to-peer rates. In winter, the mild southern coast around Faro still sees plenty of sunshine, making Portugal a genuine year-round destination for motorhome travel.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow Portugal's southern edge from Lagos to Tavira, passing golden sea cliffs at Ponta da Piedade and the peaceful lagoons of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Around 250 km of well-maintained coastal roads make this route perfect for a campervan. Plenty of campsites sit close to the shore, and fresh seafood is never far away.
A compact 200 km loop from Óbidos through Nazaré and São Martinho do Porto before reaching the monastery town of Alcobaça. This route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with wide roads and well-signed campsites. Watch the famous big waves at Nazaré's Praia do Norte and explore Óbidos' medieval walls.
Drive 350 km from Porto into the heart of Portugal's wine country, following the Douro River east to Pinhão and Freixo de Espada à Cinta. Terraced vineyards line both banks, and several quintas welcome motorhome visitors. The N222 road along the river is regularly rated among Europe's finest driving routes.
This 400 km circuit from Évora takes you through the cork-oak landscapes of Portugal's largest region. Visit the marble town of Vila Viçosa, the castle at Marvão perched above the plains, and the dark-sky reserve of Alqueva. Roads are quiet and flat — ideal for larger motorhomes. Campsites are spread out, so plan your stops.
Cover 600 km from Viana do Castelo in the Minho to Sagres at Portugal's south-western tip. Pass through Porto, Coimbra's university quarter and Sintra's forested palaces before reaching the Algarve. A campervan handles the mix of motorways and coastal lanes well. Allow at least eight days to enjoy the variety.
A 550 km adventure from Peneda-Gerês National Park south through the Serra da Estrela — home to Portugal's highest peak, Torre at 1,993 metres — and on to the Tejo Internacional Natural Park near Castelo Branco. Mountain roads require careful driving but reward you with dramatic scenery. Campsites in Gerês and Manteigas offer full hook-ups for motorhomes.

Portugal offers a wide variety of campsites, from beachfront parks along the Algarve to mountain retreats in the Serra da Estrela and rural spots in the Alentejo plains. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower blocks and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Many coastal campsites also include swimming pools and direct beach access, while inland parks tend to offer more space and quieter surroundings. Booking ahead during summer is always a good idea.
Portugal's motorway network (autoestradas, prefixed with 'A') covers the country well, connecting Lisbon to Porto via the A1 in around three hours. Most motorways use electronic tolling — you will need a Via Verde transponder or purchase a prepaid toll card at border crossings and post offices. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads, while vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits of 120 km/h and 100 km/h respectively. Rest areas with fuel, parking and basic facilities appear regularly along major routes. Some older national roads (estradas nacionais) in mountainous areas like the Serra da Estrela can be narrow, so plan your route if you are driving a larger vehicle.
It was our 1st time in a Caravan, and we feel very fortunate that we have done it with Jeremy & Annabella, their Caravan is exactly as decribed in the pictures, in a perfect mechanical situation, we had 0 problens through the whole joirney, and we were 6 people in that Caravan, I have no doubt that we will reserve it again in the future. The check in and out went completely smoove with Jeremy, you can feel free to trust them!
Great, responsible, and responsive owner. Van is equipped as advertised. The refrigerator loses its battery fast when van is turned off, so it caused some issues overnight in hot weather. Cars engine is a bit weak when driving uphill, but never caused any real issues. Great choice if you want a small van for exploring towns and coast of Andalusia.
Absolutely recommended renter. Really kind and nice people. They gave back the van clean in and out, so big respect to you guys. Thanks for your rent.
Very nice camper that has a lot of comfort for travelling Mallorca. One star less due toSlow/difficult communication with the owner, who only started to confirm our messages/questions 1 day before the actual start of the trip, The fact that the agreed pick-up time was not respected (and not communicated before we arrived on the airport) and got delayed with 1,5 h.Do know that towels and linnen are available in the camper (or they were at least for us), so no need to bring them.
Fantastic experience renting Dirk’s camper van! Pick-up and drop-off were exactly as we wished—very flexible both in time and location, which we really appreciated. The van was perfect for four adults: spacious, spotlessly clean, and excellently equipped with everything we needed and more. It was also very easy to drive and everything worked perfectly. Dirk provided a very handy e-book with all the essential information about the van, which made everything even easier.A pure pleasure from beginning to end—we would definitely rent from Dirk again!
Sandro and gus were on hand to help with any issues that arose. Loads of power for the steep windy roads, the van was well equiped and comfortable . An extra blanket for parking at altetude was apreciated as it was cooler up the hills. Shower worked but not much hot water. We had a small scrape with another car and insurance sorted the third party but we lost some of our deposit to repair van. Sandro was very helpfull and there was no dramas. So maybe paying for comprehensive insurance would be a better plan in future.
