The Azores archipelago stretches across 600 kilometres of the mid-Atlantic, made up of nine volcanic islands that each offer a completely different landscape to explore. On São Miguel, the largest island, you can drive between the steaming fumaroles of Furnas and the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades in just under 70 km, passing through lush tea plantations at Gorreana — one of the only tea estates in Europe. Over on Faial, the Capelinhos volcano site tells the story of the 1957 eruption that reshaped the island's western tip, while neighbouring Pico is dominated by Mount Pico, Portugal's highest peak at 2,351 metres. The distance from Ponta Delgada on São Miguel to Horta on Faial is roughly 270 km by air, giving a sense of how spread out these islands really are. Roads across the Azores tend to be narrow and winding, particularly along coastal cliffs and through highland pastures, which makes a compact campervan an ideal way to travel at your own pace. Motorhome travellers will find well-maintained routes connecting the main towns on each island. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the Azores, choosing from a range of campervans and vehicles suited to island driving. This peer-to-peer approach means more flexibility, local tips from your host, and a genuine connection to the places you visit.
The Azores enjoy a mild oceanic climate year-round, making them a great destination in any season. From May to October, longer days and warmer temperatures are perfect for coastal walks and whale watching — the Azores are one of the world's top cetacean-spotting locations. June brings the Sanjoaninas festival in Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira, with parades, bullfights, and live music across ten days. Autumn is ideal for quieter roads and dramatic skies, while spring brings hydrangea-lined lanes in full bloom. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means better rates outside peak summer months, and you can secure a campervan hire well in advance for July and August when demand is highest.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 120 km loop on São Miguel links the green and blue crater lakes of Sete Cidades with the hot springs of Furnas, passing through Nordeste's dramatic viewpoints. Ideal for a campervan, with plenty of scenic stops and local campsites along the way. Allow 3 to 6 days.
Circle Terceira's 80 km coastline from the UNESCO-listed centre of Angra do Heroísmo to the natural swimming pools at Biscoitos. Compact roads suit a campervan perfectly. Spend 3 to 5 days exploring caves, pastures, and volcanic calderas across the Azores' cultural heart.
Covering around 200 km across three islands, this Azores route connects Horta's marina on Faial with the vineyards of Pico and the fajãs of São Jorge. Short ferry crossings link each island. A motorhome or campervan works well — plan 5 to 8 days for a relaxed pace.
Traverse the full 350 km length of São Miguel, from the tea fields of Gorreana in the east to the clifftop lighthouse at Ferraria in the west. This Azores route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with well-surfaced roads and regular stopping points. Allow 5 to 8 days.
This 450 km Azores adventure takes in Faial, Pico, São Jorge, and Graciosa over 7 to 11 days. Highlights include whale watching from Lajes do Pico and the thermal sulphur cave at Carapacho on Graciosa. A campervan is ideal for the compact island roads and ferry hops.
The ultimate Azores road trip covers roughly 600 km of driving across all nine islands, from Corvo in the west to Santa Maria in the east. Expect diverse landscapes, from Flores' cascading waterfalls to Pico's summit. A motorhome or campervan suits this 10 to 15 day journey.

Campsites across the Azores are spread over several islands, offering pitches surrounded by volcanic landscapes, coastal views, and green highland pastures. Most sites provide essential facilities including electric hook-ups, showers, toilets, and drinking water, suitable for both campervans and motorhomes. From São Miguel's well-equipped parks to the quieter grounds on Flores, you will find options to match every style of trip across the Azores.
The Azores have no motorways or toll roads — all driving is on regional and local roads. Speed limits for motorhomes and campervans generally follow standard Portuguese rules: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, though many island roads have lower advisory limits due to curves and gradients. Roads on São Miguel and Terceira are the widest and best maintained, while smaller islands like Corvo and Flores have single-lane stretches. Fuel stations can be sparse on the smaller islands, so fill up when you can. Larger motorhomes should check ferry vehicle size limits when island-hopping between the central and western groups.
All went well!
Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
Lucia and her friends were fantastic guests! They rented our VW campervan and took great care of it throughout their journey. If they ever wish to return, they are always more than welcome back anytime! Warm regards, Danijel
