Austria's Grossglockner High Alpine Road climbs to 2,504 metres across 48 hairpin bends, making it one of Europe's most spectacular mountain passes for touring by road. From the baroque grandeur of Salzburg to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Hallstatt, and from the imperial palaces of Vienna to the ski villages of the Arlberg, this landlocked country packs an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a compact area. The distance from Vienna to Innsbruck is roughly 475 km, while Salzburg to Graz covers about 280 km — both routes winding through alpine valleys and rolling farmland that reward a slower pace. Austria's well-maintained road network is ideal for larger vehicles, with generous rest areas and clearly signposted scenic routes through the Wachau Valley, the Salzkammergut lake district, and the Tyrolean Alps. Whether you want to park beside a mountain lake, explore a wine-growing village along the Danube, or wake up to views of the Hohe Tauern range, travelling by campervan gives you the flexibility to follow your own schedule. With a motorhome, you can carry everything you need for high-altitude adventures and valley-floor relaxation alike. Through Yescapa, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across Austria — from city pick-ups in Vienna and Salzburg to smaller towns closer to the mountains — choosing the size and style that fits your trip perfectly.
Austria welcomes campervan travellers from late April through to October, with each month offering something different. June to September is the prime season for alpine routes — the Grossglockner High Alpine Road typically opens in May and closes in late October. In July, the Salzburg Festival fills the city with world-class music and theatre, while December brings the famous Christkindlmarkt season across Vienna and Innsbruck. Shoulder months like May and September offer quieter campsites and pleasant hiking temperatures. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better rates outside peak summer weeks, so booking a motorhome for a September tour of the Wachau wine harvest can be both rewarding and great value.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 270 km loop through Austria's Salzkammergut region links the lakeside towns of Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang, and Mondsee. Wind past more than a dozen alpine lakes, each with waterside parking spots ideal for a campervan. Stop at the Dachstein Ice Caves and enjoy fresh fish from local smokehouses along the way.
Follow the Danube for 200 km between Krems and Melk through Austria's Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Visit the baroque Melk Abbey, taste Grüner Veltliner in Dürnstein, and cycle along riverside paths. The flat terrain and wide roads make this route comfortable for any motorhome size.
This 380 km route crosses Austria's Tyrol from Innsbruck to Lienz via the Brenner Pass and the Zillertal Valley. Explore the medieval old town of Hall in Tirol, hike in the Stubai Alps, and visit the Krimml Waterfalls — Europe's highest at 380 metres. Well-placed campsites along the valley floors suit both campervans and motorhomes.
Cover 450 km from Villach through Austria's sunny south, looping past Lake Wörthersee, Lake Millstätter See, and the Nockberge mountain range. Swim in warm alpine lakes, visit the hilltop castle of Hochosterwitz, and drive the Nockalmstrasse scenic road. This route combines relaxation with mountain scenery across Carinthia.
This 600 km loop links Austria's three largest cities — Vienna, Salzburg, and Graz — with alpine scenery in between. Start in Vienna, head west through the Wachau to Salzburg, then south over the Tauern motorway to Graz and its UNESCO-listed old town. A campervan lets you mix city culture with countryside stops at your own pace.
This 750 km route spans Austria from east to west, starting in Vienna and finishing in Bregenz on Lake Constance. Drive through the Semmering Pass, stop in Graz, cross into Carinthia, climb the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, pass through Salzburg and Innsbruck, and end at the shores of the Bodensee. A comprehensive motorhome journey through every Austrian landscape.

Austria offers a wide range of campsites spread from the alpine west to the Danube lowlands in the east. Whether you prefer lakeside pitches in the Salzkammergut, mountain-view spots in Tyrol, or riverside parks along the Danube, you will find well-maintained facilities throughout the country. Most sites provide full hook-ups for motorhomes and level pitches for campervans, along with modern shower blocks, waste disposal stations, and often on-site restaurants or shops.
Austria uses a vignette system for motorways and expressways. You need to purchase a toll sticker (Vignette) before entering any motorway — available at petrol stations, border crossings, and online. A 10-day vignette is the most practical option for shorter trips. Some alpine tunnels and passes, such as the Brenner, Tauern, and Arlberg tunnels, charge separate tolls payable at the booth. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 70 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 100 km/h on motorways. Vehicles under 3.5 tonnes follow standard car limits of 100 km/h and 130 km/h respectively. Rest areas along Austrian motorways are well equipped, with many offering dedicated spaces for larger vehicles.
Sofia and Joaqim were really lovely! We enjoyed our trip a lot. The van was clean and had everything that was listed. We had no troubles with anything, it was super easy, convenient and cosy place to stay. We can honestly recommend it. 🥰❤️
It was our first time traveling with a camper, and renting this one for our trip around Mallorca turned out to be an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience that exceeded all our expectations. The camper was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Everything was well-maintained and thoughtfully equipped, which made our first camper trip easy and enjoyable. Communication with Gustavo was excellent from start to finish. He always responded very quickly, was friendly and helpful, and made the whole process smooth and stress-free. He also shared some fantastic recommendations for places to visit and park around the island, which made our trip even better. We couldn't have asked for a better first camper experience and would highly recommend both the camper and Gustavo to anyone planning a trip to Mallorca. We would happily rent it again in the future!
It was perfect. The owner is a very nice guy who picked us up from Funchal to get to Machico and explained everything about the car. The car included everything that was needed for our roadtrip. The tent is spacious and the amenities were of good quality. Overall it was an amazing experience to enjoy the island this way!
Great communication from Gladys and great van! Thanks for making our trip seamless!
Nice car, friendly and helpful people
