Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Southern Austria

Southern Austria — a region worth exploring

Southern Austria stretches across 220 kilometres from the vine-covered hills of southern Styria to the turquoise waters of Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia, making it one of Europe's most rewarding regions for a road trip. The Großglockner High Alpine Road, Austria's highest surfaced pass at 2,504 metres, offers a driving experience unlike any other, with 36 hairpin bends and views across the Pasterze Glacier. From Graz, the country's second-largest city and a UNESCO City of Design, to the medieval centre of Villach is roughly 190 kilometres — a journey that passes through rolling farmland, dense forests and dramatic mountain valleys. Along the way, you can stop at Burg Hochosterwitz, a hilltop castle with 14 fortified gates, or explore the Eggenberg Palace in Graz with its 365-window façade. The region's warm lakes, including Klopeiner See and Millstätter See, are ideal for overnight stays by the water, and many lakeside areas welcome campervans and motorhomes with dedicated pitches. Southern Austria's well-maintained roads and gentle valley routes make it accessible for all vehicle sizes, while mountain passes add excitement for confident drivers. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and group size.

Best time to visit

Southern Austria is wonderful from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring wildflower meadows and comfortable temperatures for exploring the lakes and alpine passes. The Großglockner High Alpine Road typically opens in early May and stays accessible until late October. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan early on Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles from local owners, often at better rates than traditional hire. In September, the Aufsteirern festival in Graz celebrates Styrian folk culture, while October's grape harvest along the South Styrian Wine Road is a treat for food lovers. Shoulder months offer quieter campsites and pleasant driving conditions across southern Austria.

Frequently asked questions

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Southern Austria

Radosław

It was our first time in campervan and we got everything we needed. The car was comfortable, economical and fully equipped. We spent an unforgettable week during the total eclipse, although it was almost impossible to find available space on camping sites at that time. But the car batteries did great job so we could park even without the electricity access. The car used 8,9 l/100 km even though we almost didn't use highways. Carlos was very nice and helpful, he made our trip convenient and safe. We definitely recommend Carlos and his vehicle!

There was a small hiccup at first with the reservation, but it was solved quickly and from there on it was total bliss. The motorhome is absolutely top-notch, and the service was really warm and friendly. Despite the language barrier (we didn't speak much Spanish and they didn't speak much English), everything went very smoothly. So there's no need to worry if you don't speak their language — they have the means and experience to handle it. At the handover they walked us through the motorhome and gave us some camping tips and tricks, which made our trip very enjoyable. A big plus was the air conditioner in the living quarters.

Fantastic Family Experience with a Wonderful Host! We are a family of four and could not be more satisfied with our experience. The owner, Martial, was exceptionally helpful throughout the entire process. Before booking, he answered all of our questions promptly and consistently catered to our needs. During our trip, he went out of his way to check in on us and offered fantastic local advice and recommendations on places to visit. The pickup and drop-off processes were both seamless and efficient. The van itself is in excellent condition, extremely well-maintained, spotless, and fully equipped with everything you might need for a great trip—with practically everything working perfectly. We were also deeply touched by Martial’s kindness in picking us up at the airport, which made the start of our trip so much easier.

We had a fantastic family road trip in Carlos’s motorhome, visiting Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Schwarzwald, and Europa-Park. The vehicle had a few minor scratches from previous rentals and was due for a routine service, but Carlos assured us upfront not to worry about them, and it didn't affect our trip at all. The motorhome was well-equipped—having the onboard air grill was an especially nice touch! Pickup and drop-off were quick, straightforward, and hassle-free. We highly recommend Carlos and his motorhome.

The vehicle picture are old and today's vehicle condition are quite different; there are signs of rust on the bodywork and early signs of mold on the inner tent of the upper bed; few scratches to the vehicle are present but they do no demine its functionalities. Despite the fact that everything works, It has been frustrating to pull and push the rear seat back especially at the beginning of the journey, then we get it right with the experience; I personally recommend having the fold/unfold mechanism inspected and fixed. Anyhow, it allowed us to have a wonderful vacation and the robust engine never left us unsupported. Antonio is very supportive and responsive; he helped us with the logistics and gave us a few tips to start the travel.

This was our first experience with a camper. Aurora and Cristian were very helpful and the rental process was very easy and fast. The camper is quite old, but is very well maintained and fully functional. I would recommend this camper. We didn't had any issues during our trip.
