Why hire a campervan or motorhome in France

France — a country worth exploring

France spans over 640,000 square kilometres, making it the largest country in the European Union by area, with landscapes ranging from the Alpine peaks of Mont Blanc at 4,808 metres to the lavender fields of Provence and the Atlantic surf beaches of Biarritz. The country offers an extraordinary network of well-maintained roads — driving from Paris to Marseille covers roughly 775 kilometres, while the route from Bordeaux to Strasbourg stretches around 870 kilometres, crossing dramatically different terrain along the way. Iconic landmarks like the Pont du Gard aqueduct, the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, the Loire Valley châteaux, and the volcanic Chaîne des Puys in Auvergne reward those who travel at their own pace. Coastal routes along Brittany and Normandy are well suited to campervans, while the wide motorways connecting major cities make motorhome travel comfortable and straightforward. France also has one of Europe's densest networks of aires de service — dedicated rest and overnight stops designed specifically for touring vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners spread across every corner of France, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your trip. Whether you want a compact van for Provençal back roads or a fully equipped family motorhome for a cross-country adventure, peer-to-peer sharing means more choice and a more personal start to your journey.

Best time to visit

France welcomes road trippers year-round, though May to October is the most popular window for campervan travel. The Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills every town with free open-air concerts, while the Feria de Nîmes in late May brings lively celebrations to the south. Summer means long daylight hours and full access to mountain passes like the Col du Galibier in the Alps. Spring and autumn offer quieter roads and comfortable temperatures, ideal for exploring wine regions during harvest season. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season trips especially good value — book a few weeks ahead for the best selection of motorhomes and campervans across France.

The best road trips in France

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Normandy Coastal Trail

250 km 3–6 days

Begin in Rouen and drive via the chalk cliffs of Étretat to the D-Day landing beaches at Omaha Beach. Around 250 km take you through charming harbour towns like Honfleur and Deauville. The route suits a campervan well, as many coastal roads are narrow and winding.

Alsace Wine Route

280 km 3–6 days

Follow the Route des Vins d'Alsace from Marlenheim to Thann across roughly 280 km. Along the way, half-timbered villages like Riquewihr and Colmar invite you to stop for tastings at local wineries. Campsites with motorhome pitches line the entire route.

Provence Loop

400 km 5–8 days

Start in Avignon, drive through the lavender fields of the Plateau de Valensole and the Gorges du Verdon, then loop back to Aix-en-Provence. Around 400 km of fragrant landscapes, with stops in Gordes and at Lac de Sainte-Croix. A campervan handles the winding hill roads of Haute-Provence with ease.

Atlantic Coast: Nantes to Biarritz

450 km 5–8 days

Drive from Nantes along the Atlantic coast via La Rochelle and the Île de Ré to Biarritz. Around 450 km through oyster ports, pine forests and surf spots on the Côte d'Argent. Large campsites in the Landes region offer comfortable pitches for any motorhome.

Occitanie Discovery Route

600 km 7–11 days

Explore southern France from Toulouse via the medieval fortress city of Carcassonne and the Millau Viaduct to the Cévennes mountains. Around 600 km through gorges, plateaux and Cathar castles. A mix of wide national roads and narrow mountain lanes suits both campervans and compact motorhomes.

Grand Tour de France

750 km 10–15 days

Experience France on a grand loop from Paris through the Loire châteaux, the vineyards of Bordeaux and the Pyrenees to Nice on the Côte d'Azur. Around 750 km of core route, easily extended with detours. Along the way you pass Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Dordogne and the Pont du Gard near Nîmes — a road trip that captures the full diversity of France.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in France

Most French motorways (autoroutes) are toll roads, and you can pay at péage booths by card or cash, or use a Liber-t electronic tag for quicker passage. Key routes like the A6 (Paris to Lyon) and A7 (Lyon to Marseille) are well-equipped with rest areas every 20 to 30 kilometres. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard cars at 130 km/h on motorways, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are limited to 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Height barriers at some toll plazas and car parks can be tight for taller vehicles, so check clearance before entering. France also has a growing network of free dual carriageways, especially in Brittany, offering toll-free alternatives for longer trips.
