Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur stretches across 31,400 square kilometres from the Mediterranean coastline to the highest peaks of the French Alps, making it one of Europe's most geographically diverse regions for a road trip. The Gorges du Verdon, often called Europe's Grand Canyon, plunges 700 metres deep and offers breathtaking viewpoints along the Route des Crêtes. From Marseille to Nice, the coastal drive covers roughly 200 km of winding seaside roads, while heading inland from Aix-en-Provence to Briançon takes you about 250 km through lavender fields, olive groves, and alpine passes. The region is home to the Calanques National Park near Marseille, the ochre cliffs of Roussillon, the Roman amphitheatre in Arles, and the medieval hilltop village of Gordes. Campervan travellers will find a mix of wide autoroutes and narrow mountain roads, so choosing the right vehicle matters. Coastal routes suit compact campervans, while the broader valleys and plateaux are ideal for larger motorhomes. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners spread across Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur — from port cities like Toulon to alpine towns like Gap — giving you the flexibility to start your journey exactly where it suits you. This peer-to-peer approach means a wider choice of vehicles and often more competitive pricing than traditional rental depots.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is a year-round destination, though each season brings its own appeal. Late June to mid-July is when the lavender blooms across the Valensole plateau, drawing visitors from around the world. In July, the Festival d'Avignon fills the city with theatre and performance for three weeks. Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures for exploring both the coast and the alpine interior, with quieter campsites and more availability. Booking a campervan through Yescapa during these shoulder months often means better rates from local owners. Winter opens up the ski resorts of Serre Chevalier and Vars, and a motorhome makes a practical base camp for a snow holiday in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow 250 km of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur coastline from Cassis to Menton over 4–6 days. Stop at Saint-Tropez and Antibes, with seaside campsites perfect for a campervan. Coastal parking can be tight, so arrive early at popular spots.
A 150 km loop through Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur's dramatic Gorges du Verdon over 3–5 days. Drive between Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Castellane, stopping at Lac de Sainte-Croix. Compact campervans handle the narrow canyon roads with ease.
Traverse 350 km from Sisteron to Briançon through the high Alps of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in 5–8 days. Pass through Embrun and the Serre-Ponçon lake area. A motorhome with good clearance is ideal for the mountain passes and well-equipped stopovers.
Wind through 180 km of the Valensole plateau and Luberon hills over 3–6 days. Visit Forcalquier and Apt in the heart of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur's lavender country. Best enjoyed from late June to mid-July, with plenty of rural campsites along the way.
A 400 km circuit linking Avignon, Arles, Marseille, and Aix-en-Provence over 6–9 days. This Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur route covers Roman ruins, coastal calanques, and vineyard country. Suits both campervans and motorhomes, with service areas throughout.
Cover 550 km across the full breadth of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in 8–13 days, from Nice on the coast to Gap in the Alps, via Digne-les-Bains and Manosque. A motorhome gives you comfort for longer stays, and campsites range from beachside to mountain settings.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur offers campsites across every landscape, from Mediterranean beachfronts to alpine lakesides. Coastal sites typically provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated motorhome service points. Inland and mountain campsites tend to be quieter, with spacious pitches suited to both campervans and larger vehicles. Many sites in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur stay open from March to October, with a handful operating year-round near ski resorts.
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is served by several major toll motorways, including the A7 (Autoroute du Soleil) and the A8 along the coast. Tolls are paid at booths by card or cash, and a télépéage tag speeds things up. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher toll rates. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways. Rest areas with motorhome service points appear regularly along the A7 and A8. Mountain passes such as the Col de l'Izoard may have height or weight restrictions, so check signage before ascending.
All went well!
Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
Lucia and her friends were fantastic guests! They rented our VW campervan and took great care of it throughout their journey. If they ever wish to return, they are always more than welcome back anytime! Warm regards, Danijel
