Mercantour National Park spans over 685 square kilometres of protected alpine wilderness in the southeastern corner of France, where the Alps meet the Mediterranean. The Vallée des Merveilles alone contains more than 40,000 Bronze Age rock engravings, making it one of Europe's most significant open-air archaeological sites. From the mountain town of Barcelonnette to the coastal gateway of Nice, the distance is roughly 150 km, yet the landscape shifts dramatically from snow-dusted peaks above 3,000 metres to sun-warmed olive groves. Key landmarks include the Col de la Bonette, one of Europe's highest paved roads at 2,802 metres, the turquoise waters of Lac d'Allos — the largest natural alpine lake in Europe — and the medieval perched village of Saorge overlooking the Roya Valley. The 95 km drive from Saint-Martin-Vésubie to Tende winds through gorges and forested valleys, offering a constantly changing backdrop for travellers in a campervan or motorhome. Narrow mountain roads and hairpin bends are part of the charm, so choosing the right vehicle matters. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based across the region, from Nice to the upper valleys. This peer-to-peer approach means a wider choice of vehicles suited to alpine roads, along with insider tips from people who know Mercantour best.
The best time to hire a campervan in Mercantour runs from June to September, when the Col de la Bonette and other high-altitude passes are clear of snow and fully open. July brings the Fête de la Transhumance in Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, celebrating the seasonal movement of flocks to summer pastures — a tradition unique to these alpine valleys. Autumn is equally rewarding, with golden larch forests and quieter campsites across the park. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often makes shoulder-season trips in Mercantour more affordable, and booking a few weeks ahead gives you the best pick of motorhomes and campervans from local owners near Nice and the surrounding valleys.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travellers.
This 180 km loop links Lac d'Allos, Europe's largest natural alpine lake, with the shores of Lac du Lauzanier. Allow 3 to 6 days to enjoy the trails and mountain refuges. A compact campervan handles the narrow roads well, and several small campsites dot the route between Colmars and Allos.
Follow the Tinée valley for 120 km through the dramatic Gorges de Valabres and up to the ski village of Auron. Over 3 to 5 days, stop at Beuil and Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée for local markets. The road is well-surfaced and suits both campervans and motorhomes.
Covering 350 km over 5 to 8 days, this route threads through the Vésubie, Roya, and Var valleys. Visit the perched village of Saorge and the Vallée des Merveilles trailhead near Tende. Campsites with full hook-ups are available in Saint-Martin-Vésubie and Sospel.
Tackle 280 km and some of Europe's highest paved roads over 5 to 8 days, including the Col de la Bonette at 2,802 metres and the Col de la Cayolle. Start from Barcelonnette and loop through Jausiers. Best suited to campervans given the tight switchbacks at altitude.
This 450 km circuit over 7 to 11 days circles the entire national park, from Nice through the Roya valley to Barcelonnette and back via the Var gorges. Stop at La Brigue to see the Notre-Dame des Fontaines chapel. Motorhomes fit comfortably on the main valley roads.
Stretch 550 km over 10 to 15 days, starting along the Côte d'Azur near Menton and climbing into the heart of Mercantour. Pass through Sospel, explore the Gordolasque valley, then head west to Colmars-les-Alpes. A mix of coastal and mountain campsites keeps the journey varied for any vehicle.

Mercantour's campsites are spread across its valleys, from riverside pitches near gorges to meadow sites at over 1,200 metres. Most offer electrical hook-ups, water points, and waste disposal for both campervans and motorhomes. Facilities typically include hot showers, toilets, and picnic areas, with some sites adding small shops or swimming spots. Booking ahead in July and August is a good idea, especially in popular valleys like the Vésubie and the Ubaye around Mercantour.
Mountain roads define travel in Mercantour. The main access routes include the M2205 along the Var valley and the D2204 towards Barcelonnette. Toll-free departmental roads connect most villages, though some cols like the Col de la Bonette close seasonally. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes match standard car limits, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 80 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on motorways. Hairpin bends and single-lane sections are common above 1,500 metres, so a compact campervan can be easier to manoeuvre than a large motorhome on the narrowest stretches.
The caravan is easy to handle and very comfortable.
We booked the van for our time on Crete and had a really beautiful trip :) We explored the south of the island and loved every moment of it. The van was easy to drive, comfy and homey, and everything was just as pictured. Beforehand we received videos that explained and showed us everything, so we felt well prepared from the start. Everything fit and worked perfectly. Meven was always helpful, friendly and caring in his communication. Thank you so much for the experience, it was a truly magical time :)
Christophe was great to deal with. He responded promptly to all of our queries prior to our journey. The vehicle was exactly as advertised, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. Collection and drop-off was easy. The hand-over of the vehicle was comprehensive and we felt confident as we began our journey. We highly recommend!
Brenda si è rivelata disponibile sin dal primo momento. Il van non ci ha dato alcun tipo di problema e ci ha permesso di visitare meravigliosi posti nella parte nord dell’isola regalandoci albe e tramonti indimenticabili. Super consigliato! ☀️
We couldn’t have asked for a better first experience with YesCapa! A-Z, just great. Claudio was very kind and friendly, texting on the app and when we met at the pick-up. The review of the car was easy going, no rush at all, yet felt very professional. From the formal, general information to the little specs and hacks that would improve our trip. Claudio also gave us tips and recommendations for our route and even offered to store some of our luggage so our trip will be more convenient- Thanks! The car is very easy and smooth to drive. Highways or a gravel road to camp, runs perfectly. We didn’t have a single problem. Another great feature is that it’s practically a private so no problem parking it anywhere, including zones where motorhomes and towable home are not aloud. As for the “home” aspect of the car, it takes a day or two to get the hang of the transformations. Personally, I’m an “analog” person and prefer to push/pull until I hear the ‘click’. Once or twice and everything worked fine. The inside table, Kitchen, fridge, pop-up roof, bed and more. We cooked every day of our trip, very functional. Claudio and Pamela were easy-going and welcoming on our return to the drop-off the car. To sum it up, If you’re in for a classic and smooth experience for your trip, we highly recommend renting Claudio and Pamela’s Vito!
