Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Italy

Italy — a country worth exploring

Italy stretches over 1,200 kilometres from the Alpine peaks of the Dolomites to the sun-soaked shores of Sicily, making it one of Europe's most rewarding countries to explore on four wheels. The Amalfi Coast road, a 50-kilometre ribbon carved into cliffs south of Naples, is regularly listed among the world's great drives. Head north and you can cross from Milan to Venice in roughly 270 kilometres, passing through Verona and the southern edge of Lake Garda along the way. Further south, the trulli houses of Alberobello and the Baroque towns of the Val di Noto in Sicily offer a completely different character. Italy's network of well-maintained roads connects bustling cities, quiet hilltop villages, and long stretches of coastline, giving you the freedom to shape each day around what you feel like doing. Whether you want to park beside a vineyard in Tuscany or wake up near a volcanic beach on the Aeolian Islands, a campervan lets you cover ground at your own pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners spread across the country — from Turin to Palermo — choosing the vehicle that fits your group, your route, and your budget.

Best time to visit

Italy welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. Spring, from April to June, is ideal for touring Tuscany and the lakes region, when wildflowers line the roadsides and campsites across the country open their full facilities. Summer is perfect for coastal routes and island hopping — the Giro d'Italia cycling race in May often sparks road-trip inspiration along its route. Autumn brings the grape harvest and truffle season, especially in Piedmont and Umbria, while the Venice Film Festival in late August and early September adds cultural buzz. Winter is a fine time to explore southern Italy and Sicily at a relaxed pace. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive rates outside peak months, and you can hire a campervan from owners in every corner of Italy.

The best road trips in Italy

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Grand North-to-South Traverse

750 km 10–15 days

Roughly 750 km separate Milan from the ferry port at Villa San Giovanni, gateway to Sicily. This route passes through Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Naples — five of Italy's most important cities in a single journey. You cross the food heartland of Emilia-Romagna, the Tuscan hills, and the coastal stretch of Campania. Plan overnight stops at campsites near city centres to combine sightseeing with life on the road.

The Amalfi Coast Loop

220 km 3–6 days

Starting from Naples, this 220 km loop takes you through Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi before returning via Pompeii. The winding coastal roads suit a compact campervan. Stop in Ravello for panoramic sea views and allow time to explore the archaeological site of Pompeii on the return leg.

Sicily's Eastern Shore

280 km 3–6 days

From Catania, this 280 km route follows Sicily's eastern coastline. Visit Taormina and its ancient Greek theatre, continue to Syracuse with its island quarter Ortigia, and finish in the baroque town of Noto. Campsites sit close to the sea along this stretch. A motorhome works well on the main roads connecting each town.

Tuscany and Umbria

400 km 5–8 days

This 400 km route links Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, Lake Trasimeno, and Perugia. The road winds through cypress-lined lanes and vineyards — ideal for a campervan with space for local produce. In Umbria, visit Assisi and Spoleto before looping back through Arezzo into Tuscany. Campsites with full hook-ups are plentiful in both regions.

Sardinia's Coastal Roads

450 km 5–8 days

This 450 km route runs from Cagliari via Costa Rei to the Costa Smeralda in the northeast, then across to Alghero in the northwest. Along the way, visit the Grotta di Nettuno and the Nuraghe Su Nuraxi near Barumini. Roads are well maintained and many campsites sit right on the beach — a great route for a motorhome or campervan alike.

Dolomites to Lake Garda and Venice

600 km 7–11 days

Starting in Bolzano, this 600 km route crosses the Dolomites via Passo di Sella and Cortina d'Ampezzo, descends to Lake Garda at Riva del Garda, then continues to Verona and Venice. Mountain passes alternate with lakeside roads, so a well-powered motorhome is recommended. Campsites in the Dolomites often come with mountain views right from your pitch.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Italy

Italy's motorway network, the autostrada, uses a toll system on most major routes. You pay at exit barriers using cash, card, or a Telepass electronic device. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways, lower than the standard car limits. The A1 Autostrada del Sole, running from Milan to Naples, is the country's main north–south artery and is well equipped with service areas every 30–50 km. Mountain sections, particularly through the Apennines and on Alpine passes, may include tunnels and steep gradients — keep an eye on vehicle height restrictions before entering tunnels. A valid warning triangle and reflective vest are required on board.

Nini (that’s how the owners called their beloved Mercedes van) was the perfect compagnon for the roadtrip my partner and I had in mind. Feeling like our temporary little home on wheels, it was easy to get to the most scenic spots around Lisbon and Setubal and also more inwards in Portugal. Everything in the van was almost brand new and worked perfectly fine. The bed was comfortable, enough practical storage room and the fan system they have installed kept us cool during a 40degrees summer in Portugal. We didn’t even have to switch on the airco at night. We cooked delicious meals everyday with the kitchenette in the van (they even added an oven) and could shower inside (cold and hot if needed), do dishes and take off in a second to the next stop. Whenever we had a question, Raquel was immediately there for us. All other camping necessities, such as chairs, table, sun umbrella were also provided. It was the first time for me going on a roadtrip with a van and I couldn’t be happier it was with Nini to still give me that comfort and cosiness I needed in the circumstances.

Dani is a fantastic owner and an even better human being. Extremely attentive, kind and knowledgable about the area. If you are looking for a retro van and a home away from home, Dani and his vintage VW are perfect for you :)

It was a real pleasure these guys! They were very friendly, easy to communicate with, and punctual both for the pickup and the return of the van. They brought the van back exceptionally clean and in excellent condition. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. They were so respectful, discreet, and self-sufficient that I almost forgot the van was even rented! I would happily recommend them to any host and would be delighted to welcome them back anytime. 😊
