Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Calabria

Calabria — a region worth exploring

Calabria sits at the very toe of Italy's boot, with over 780 kilometres of coastline split between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian seas. The region is home to the Pollino National Park, Italy's largest national park, which stretches across rugged peaks reaching 2,267 metres at Serra Dolcedorme. From the clifftop town of Tropea, perched above white sand beaches, to the ancient Riace Bronzes displayed at the Museo Nazionale di Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria, there is a rich mix of natural beauty and cultural heritage to discover. The drive from Cosenza to Reggio Calabria covers roughly 260 kilometres along the A2 motorway, while the coastal stretch from Tropea to Pizzo is just 25 kilometres of winding seaside road — ideal for a leisurely campervan trip. Inland, the Sila plateau offers dense forests, mirror-like lakes such as Lago Cecita, and cooler temperatures during summer months. Calabria's roads range from smooth motorways to narrow mountain passes, making it a rewarding destination for those who enjoy varied driving. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for coastal lanes or a larger motorhome for extended touring, Yescapa connects you with local owners across the region who share their vehicles peer-to-peer. You can hire a vehicle near your arrival point and set off to explore at your own pace, with the freedom to follow the coastline or head into the mountains whenever the mood strikes.

Best time to visit

Calabria enjoys a long travel season, with May to October offering warm days and calm seas along both coasts. The Peperoncino Festival in Diamante each September celebrates the region's famous chilli pepper with tastings, music, and street events — a great excuse to park up and join the fun. Spring is ideal for exploring the Sila and Pollino highlands, when wildflowers cover the meadows and trails are quiet. Summer is the most popular period for coastal campervan trips, so booking your vehicle early on Yescapa gives you the best choice from local owners at peer-to-peer prices. Autumn brings grape and olive harvests across Calabria, perfect for food lovers on a motorhome tour.

The best road trips in Calabria

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Coast of the Gods

55 km 3–5 days

This 55 km route traces Calabria's celebrated Tyrrhenian shoreline from Pizzo to Capo Vaticano. Stop in Tropea to admire the clifftop Santa Maria dell'Isola church, then continue south past sandy coves. A compact campervan suits the narrow coastal roads perfectly, and beachside parking areas are plentiful. Allow 3–5 days to soak it all in.

The Aspromonte Circuit

180 km 4–6 days

Covering 180 km through Calabria's wild southern interior, this loop explores the Aspromonte National Park. Drive from Reggio Calabria up to Gambarie for mountain views, then wind through Gerace and its Norman cathedral. Roads climb steeply, so a motorhome with good torque is recommended. Plan 4–6 days to enjoy forest walks and hilltop villages.

The Southern Ionian Coast

120 km 3–6 days

Follow 120 km of Calabria's Ionian shore from Locri to Soverato, passing the archaeological park at Monasterace and the seaside town of Riace. The road is mostly flat and well-suited to both campervans and motorhomes. Campsites dot the coastline, making overnight stops easy. Set aside 3–6 days to mix beach time with history.

The Sila and Its Lakes

200 km 5–8 days

This 200 km route winds through the Sila plateau in central Calabria, linking Camigliatello Silano, Lago Cecita, and Villaggio Mancuso. Dense pine forests and cool mountain air make it a refreshing contrast to the coast. Campervan travellers will find well-equipped stopping points along the way. Spend 5–8 days exploring trails and lakeside picnic spots.

From Tyrrhenian to Ionian

350 km 6–9 days

Spanning 350 km, this cross-Calabria route links Scalea on the Tyrrhenian coast to Corigliano-Rossano on the Ionian side, cutting through the Pollino National Park. Expect mountain passes, river gorges, and panoramic viewpoints. A motorhome with ample storage is ideal for this 6–9 day adventure through some of the region's most dramatic landscapes.

The Grand Calabrian Tour

600 km 10–15 days

At 600 km, this complete loop circles Calabria from Cosenza along the Tyrrhenian coast to Reggio Calabria, then returns via the Ionian shore and Sila highlands. You will pass Tropea, Scilla, Gerace, and Lago Arvo among many highlights. Both campervans and motorhomes work well on this varied route. Allow 10–15 days for a thorough exploration.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Calabria

Calabria's main motorway is the A2 (Autostrada del Mediterraneo), running the length of the region from north to south and connecting Cosenza to Reggio Calabria toll-free. Unlike much of Italy, this stretch has no tolls, which is a welcome bonus for motorhome travellers. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on dual carriageways. The A2 features regular service areas with fuel, food, and parking suitable for larger vehicles. Secondary roads along the coast and through the Sila and Aspromonte mountains can be narrow and winding, so take your time and check height restrictions before setting off.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
