Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Marche

Marche — a region worth exploring

Marche stretches along 180 kilometres of Adriatic coastline in central Italy, yet more than two-thirds of the region is covered by hills and mountains that rise sharply from the sea. From the limestone caves of Frasassi Grotte, among the largest underground cave systems in Europe, to the medieval fortress of Gradara and the Renaissance splendour of the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, every corner rewards the curious traveller. The distance from Pesaro in the north to San Benedetto del Tronto in the south is roughly 170 km along the coast road, while heading inland from Ancona to the Sibillini Mountains National Park covers around 100 km of winding roads through rolling farmland and narrow river valleys. Compact fishing villages sit alongside long sandy beaches, and the interior is dotted with fortified hilltop towns such as Offida and Corinaldo, each with its own local festival and food tradition. For campervan travellers, the varied terrain means you can wake up by the sea one morning and park among chestnut forests the next. A motorhome gives you the space to carry bikes or kayaks for the region's many outdoor trails and rivers. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Marche, choosing from a wide range of vehicles that suit couples, families, or groups — all with the flexibility and personal touch that peer-to-peer sharing brings to every trip.

Best time to visit

Marche enjoys a long travel season from April through to October. The Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro each August draws music lovers from around the world, while the Frasassi caves remain a comfortable temperature year-round. Spring and early summer are ideal for a campervan trip along quieter coastal roads and through wildflower-covered hills. Autumn brings grape and olive harvests, with local sagre (food festivals) in almost every town. Book ahead for July and August if you want beachside pitches, and consider shoulder months for more choice and better rates through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, where owners in Marche often offer flexible pricing outside peak weeks.

The best road trips in Marche

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Conero Riviera

80 km 3–5 days

This 80 km loop hugs the dramatic Conero headland south of Ancona. Stop at Sirolo's clifftop viewpoint, swim at the pebble beaches of Portonovo, and explore Numana's tiny harbour. A campervan is perfect for the narrow coastal lanes and small parking areas along the way.

Hilltop Villages of the Pesaro Hinterland

120 km 3–6 days

Over 120 km and 3–6 days, wind through the hills behind Pesaro to discover Gradara's medieval castle, the walled town of Mondavio, and the truffle country around Sant'Angelo in Vado. Quiet campervan-friendly stopovers dot the route, with farm stays offering local produce.

The Sibillini Mountains Trail

350 km 5–8 days

A 350 km route across Marche's mountainous interior, taking 5–8 days. Drive through Visso and Castelluccio's famous plateau, then descend via Amandola and Montefortino. A motorhome with good ground clearance handles the higher passes well. Expect alpine meadows and quiet valleys.

Adriatic Coast: North to South

180 km 5–8 days

Follow 180 km of Marche's Adriatic shore from Gabicce Mare to San Benedetto del Tronto over 5–8 days. Highlights include Fano's Roman arch, Senigallia's velvet beach, and the seafood restaurants of Civitanova Marche. Coastal campsites welcome both campervans and motorhomes.

Caves and Gorges of Marche

250 km 4–7 days

This 250 km inland circuit over 4–7 days links the Frasassi Caves near Genga with the Furlo Gorge and the red gorge of the Infernaccio. Roads are scenic and well-maintained. A compact campervan suits the winding valley routes, and wild swimming spots abound.

The Grand Tour of Marche

520 km 8–15 days

Cover 520 km in 8–15 days for a full loop of the region, from Urbino's Renaissance centre to the Sibillini peaks and back along the coast through Ancona and Pesaro. A motorhome offers comfort for the longer distances, and you will find well-equipped stopovers throughout Marche.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Marche

Marche is served by the A14 motorway running along the Adriatic coast, which is a toll road — payment is made at booths by cash, card, or Telepass. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls. The general speed limit on Italian motorways is 130 km/h for cars, but vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must keep to 100 km/h. Inland roads are mostly two-lane and can include tight bends through hill towns, so a campervan under 7 metres is easier to manoeuvre. Rest areas with services appear regularly along the A14, and many have dedicated spaces for larger vehicles.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
