Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia — a region worth exploring

Friuli-Venezia Giulia sits at Italy's north-eastern corner, where the Julian Alps meet the Adriatic Sea across just 150 km, making it one of the most geographically diverse regions you can explore in a campervan. The Tagliamento, often called Europe's last wild river, flows unregulated for 170 km from the Carnic Alps to the coast, carving wide gravel beds through the landscape. From the Roman mosaics of Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the grand Piazza Unità d'Italia in Trieste — the largest sea-facing square in Europe — the region packs centuries of history into a compact area. The drive from Trieste to Tarvisio near the Austrian border covers around 160 km, passing through the Collio wine hills and into dense alpine forests. Udine, the region's cultural heart, sits roughly 70 km north of the lagoon town of Grado, where golden beaches line a sheltered coastline. Friuli-Venezia Giulia's roads are well suited to motorhome travel, with manageable distances between stops and a good network of service areas. Whether you want to park up beside Lake Cavazzo, hike in the Dolomiti Friulane, or sample Collio wines at the Slovenian border, a campervan gives you the flexibility to connect coast, plains, and mountains at your own pace. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Friuli-Venezia Giulia, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group and your route.

Best time to visit

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is enjoyable from spring right through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for exploring the Collio vineyards and the alpine foothills, while the Barcolana regatta in Trieste each October draws thousands and fills the Gulf with sails. Summer is perfect for the Adriatic beaches around Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro, and mountain campsites in the Carnia area stay pleasantly cool. Book ahead for July and August, the most popular months for campervan travel in the region. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive rates even during peak season by hiring directly from local owners across Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia's motorway network includes the A4 (connecting Venice to Trieste) and the A23 heading north towards Austria via Tarvisio. Tolls apply on these routes and are paid at booths by cash, card, or Telepass. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as a higher vehicle category, so toll fees are slightly higher. The speed limit on motorways for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is 100 km/h, while those under 3.5 tonnes may travel at 130 km/h. Rest areas with dedicated campervan and motorhome parking are well spaced along the A4 and A23. Mountain sections near Tarvisio include some gradients and tunnels, but roads are well maintained year-round.

Unfortunately, the rented van had a technical problem, which couldn't be solved by the car manufacturer's service. The owner did everything to find a replacement van for me, and he was successful, which I really appreciate. Despite of these circumstances, I could spend a very nice time on Madeira with the help of him!

Great service, very good vehicle, which was basically brand new in this case and well equipped. The introduction to the camper near Faro was absolutely flawless and thorough. Bruno made us familiar with all critical and non-critical aspects of the bus. He was also always reachable and kindly helped us out when we had to change our drop-off date and time due to an emergency change in our plans. I would fully recommend this company!
