Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Basilicata

Basilicata — a region worth exploring

Basilicata is home to Matera, whose Sassi cave dwellings have been continuously inhabited for over 9,000 years, making it one of the oldest settlements on Earth. This compact southern Italian region stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast at Maratea to the Ionian shoreline near Metaponto, covering roughly 150 km east to west. In between, the Pollino National Park rises to 2,267 metres at Serra Dolcedorme, offering alpine-style landscapes and winding mountain roads that reward patient drivers. The region also features the striking clay formations of the Calanchi di Aliano, the medieval hilltop town of Venosa — birthplace of the Roman poet Horace — and the serene waters of Lago di Monticchio nestled in a volcanic crater. From Potenza, the regional capital, to the Ionian coast is around 100 km, a manageable drive that passes through rolling farmland and quiet villages. Basilicata's relatively low traffic and well-maintained secondary roads make it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome at your own pace. Whether you want to wake up overlooking the Pollino peaks or park near a sandy Ionian beach, the freedom of a campervan lets you experience the region's contrasts in a single trip. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Basilicata, choosing from a range of vehicles to suit your group and your route — a peer-to-peer approach that keeps things personal and flexible.

Best time to visit

Basilicata is wonderful to explore from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm, dry days perfect for driving through the Pollino mountains and along the Ionian coast. The Festa della Bruna in Matera, held every 2 July, is a spectacular celebration with processions and fireworks worth planning around. Summer is peak season, so booking your campervan early on Yescapa gives you the best choice of vehicles from local owners at competitive peer-to-peer prices. September and October offer mild temperatures and quieter roads, ideal for a motorhome trip through the Calanchi landscapes and harvest-season food festivals across the region.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Basilicata

Basilicata's main motorway is the A3 (now part of the E45), which skirts the western edge of the region near Lagonegro and connects towards both Campania and Calabria. Most of this stretch is toll-free within Basilicata. The primary routes through the region are dual carriageways and well-maintained state roads such as the SS407 Basentana, linking Potenza to the Ionian coast. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on main roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Mountain passes in the Pollino area have some tight bends, so allow extra time if driving a larger vehicle.

Home away from home 🫶🏽✨ The whole experience was amazing from start to finish, the van has absolutely everything you need to be off grid and free. Mariana was great to deal with, she checked in along the way to ensure everything was fine with the van. I would recommend this vehicle for a solo traveller as the bed up the top allowed so much space and freedom throughout the travels however the bed below was still comfortable to sleep on if you had 2 people. Would highly recommend renting this van! 10/10 xxx
