Lazio is home to over 60 kilometres of ancient Roman aqueduct ruins, the longest surviving stretch of any ancient civilisation's water system, winding through countryside that feels unchanged for centuries. The region wraps around Rome but extends far beyond the capital, from the Tyrrhenian coastline to the Apennine foothills. Drive from Rome to the medieval hilltop town of Civita di Bagnoregio, roughly 125 km north, and you will find yourself crossing volcanic plateaux and passing Lake Bolsena, one of Europe's largest volcanic lakes. Head south from Rome about 130 km and you reach the Parco Nazionale del Circeo, a protected coastal reserve with sand dunes, wetlands, and dense Mediterranean forest. Lazio also offers the thermal springs of Saturnia's neighbour, Fiuggi, and the well-preserved Etruscan necropolis at Cerveteri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape is ideal for touring by road — wide plains give way to gentle hills, and coastal routes run alongside sandy beaches. Whether you choose a compact campervan for navigating Rome's outskirts or a spacious motorhome for a longer family loop, Lazio rewards slow travel. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across the region, giving you flexible pick-up points and a personal touch that makes planning your Lazio road trip straightforward and enjoyable.
Lazio is a wonderful destination from spring right through to autumn. April and May bring comfortable temperatures and wildflower-covered hillsides, perfect for a campervan trip along the coast or through the countryside. Summer is ideal for beach stops near Sperlonga and Gaeta, and in July you can catch the Infiorata di Genzano, a spectacular flower festival where streets are carpeted in elaborate petal designs. September and October offer warm days, quieter roads, and harvest festivals across Lazio's wine-producing areas, including the Sagra dell'Uva in Marino each October. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing from local owners.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 90 km route follows Lazio's southern coastline from Gaeta to Sperlonga, passing sandy coves and Roman ruins. Allow 3–5 days to enjoy seaside campsites and the clifftop Temple of Jupiter Anxur in Terracina. Great for campervans.
Covering 150 km through northern Lazio, this route links Viterbo, Civita di Bagnoregio, and Bomarzo's Parco dei Mostri. Spend 3–6 days exploring Etruscan heritage and volcanic landscapes. Motorhomes have good access on well-maintained roads.
A compact 60 km circuit through the Alban Hills southeast of Rome, linking Frascati, Castel Gandolfo, and Nemi. Ideal for 3–5 days of wine tasting and lakeside walks in Lazio's volcanic crater country. Well suited to smaller campervans.
This 200 km route winds through Lazio's rural heartland from Rieti to Farfa Abbey and along the Tiber Valley. Allow 5–8 days to visit olive groves, medieval abbeys, and the Terminillo mountain area. Suitable for both motorhomes and campervans.
A 350 km journey from Rome south through the Pontine Plain to Formia, with a ferry hop to Ponza island. Over 6–9 days, explore the Parco Nazionale del Circeo and Lazio's best coastal scenery. Park your campervan at the port before sailing.
This 550 km loop covers the full breadth of Lazio, from Rome north to Bolsena, east to Rieti, and south to Gaeta before returning. Over 10–15 days, take in lakes, mountains, coastline, and ancient towns. A motorhome with extra berths makes this extended trip comfortable.

Lazio offers a wide range of campsites spread from the Tyrrhenian coast to the inland lakes and hills. Coastal sites near Ostia and Formia provide beach access and sea breezes, while lakeside options at Bolsena and Bracciano sit in quieter, greener surroundings. Most sites welcome both campervans and motorhomes, with electrical hook-ups, dedicated pitches, and modern shower and toilet blocks. Many also offer Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and on-site shops, making longer stays in Lazio easy to manage.
Lazio's motorway network centres on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), the ring road encircling Rome, which connects to major toll motorways like the A1 heading north and south and the A12 along the coast. Tolls are paid at booths by cash, card, or Telepass device. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classified differently and pay higher toll rates. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on dual carriageways and 100 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with fuel, food, and parking suitable for larger vehicles appear regularly along main routes. Keep in mind that some rural roads in the Sabine hills and around the lakes can be narrow, so plan your route accordingly.
Very well maintained vehicle. Alfredo took extra care to add more equipment we requested and was very responsive during the rent period.
We had a great time. We mainly had contact with the husband of Angela, they were super kind and very helpful. Defenitely recommend or come again.
Amazing rental. Best I ever experienced. Car was amazing and we were recommended to go offroad with it which was absolutely fantastic. The car goes anywhere and the cleanliness and rooftop tent setup was perfect. We camped some very beautiful places and the camping setup in the car has everything you would need for your trip. There was good communication between us and the renter - they responded very fast and was very helpful in recommending places to go.
We had a really good trip through Bulgaria with Ivo's car. He really prepared the car with everything you can need. It's a bit unusual to drive a car working with CNG and not the easiest to refill but Ivo provided us the informations to plan our refill easily.
