Roma's Colosseum welcomed over 7 million visitors in 2023, making it the most visited monument in Italy and a fitting symbol for a city that has shaped Western civilisation for nearly three millennia. Beyond the ancient arena, the Pantheon stands with its unreinforced concrete dome — the largest of its kind for over 1,300 years — while the Vatican Museums house one of the world's most important art collections, including the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Stroll through Trastevere's cobbled lanes for local trattorias, or visit the Borghese Gallery to admire works by Bernini and Caravaggio. The Appian Way, one of the earliest Roman roads, offers a peaceful stretch for walking or cycling just south of the centre. Roma sits in the Lazio region on relatively flat terrain along the Tiber river, making it easy to navigate by road. Naples is roughly 225 km to the south, and Florence lies about 275 km to the north — both within comfortable reach for a longer trip. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the city, giving you the freedom to explore Roma at your own pace and then head out to the coast or countryside whenever the mood strikes. Renting peer-to-peer means a more personal experience and often a better deal than traditional agencies.
Roma welcomes visitors warmly throughout the year. Spring brings the Natale di Roma festival on 21 April, celebrating the city's founding with parades and re-enactments across the historic centre. Autumn is ideal for exploring on foot, with comfortable temperatures and fewer queues at landmarks like the Colosseum. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel, so booking your Yescapa hire early ensures the best choice of vehicles from local owners. Winter offers a quieter Roma, with Christmas markets at Piazza Navona adding a festive atmosphere. Campsites around the city stay open year-round, making it easy to find a pitch whenever you visit.
Rome is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Travel 125 km north from Roma to Orvieto, perched on a volcanic plateau in Umbria. The Cathedral of Orvieto dazzles with its Gothic façade, while the underground caves reveal Etruscan tunnels. Stop at Lake Bolsena along the way for a swim. Motorhome parking is well signposted below the old town walls.
Head 175 km east from Roma into the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Explore the medieval village of Scanno and the turquoise waters of Lake Scanno. Pescasseroli serves as the park's main hub with a wildlife centre. Mountain roads are scenic and well-paved, with campervan-friendly areas at village entrances.
Cover 275 km north from Roma to Florence through the heart of Tuscany. Break the journey in Civita di Bagnoregio, the so-called dying town on its eroding hilltop. Explore Siena's Piazza del Campo before reaching Florence and the Uffizi Gallery. Campsites along the route offer spacious pitches with countryside views.
Drive 225 km south from Roma to the Amalfi Coast. Stop in Pompeii to walk through the excavated Roman city, then follow the winding coastal road through Positano and Amalfi. Ravello's Villa Rufolo gardens offer panoramic sea views. Book motorhome pitches in advance during summer, as coastal campsites are popular.
Head 30 km west from Roma to Ostia Antica, one of the best-preserved Roman port cities. Wander through ancient apartment blocks, mosaics, and the well-kept amphitheatre. Continue to the Lido di Ostia seafront for a coastal walk. Campervan parking is available near the archaeological site entrance.
Drive 75 km southeast from Roma into the Castelli Romani hills. Visit the Papal Palace in Castel Gandolfo overlooking Lake Albano, then sample local porchetta in Ariccia's main square. Frascati offers excellent white wine tastings. Roads are well-maintained and campsites with full hook-ups dot the hillside towns.

Roma offers a good selection of campsites within easy reach of the city centre, ranging from well-equipped suburban parks to greener spots in the surrounding countryside. Most sites provide full hook-ups, modern shower blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Several are located along the Via Flaminia and Via Cassia corridors to the north, while others sit closer to the coast near Ostia. Public transport links from many campsites make it simple to reach central Roma without driving.
Parking a larger vehicle in Roma requires some planning, but several dedicated areas make it straightforward. The city operates a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) in the historic centre, which restricts access for most vehicles during certain hours — always check current schedules before driving in. Overnight parking in a motorhome or campervan is generally permitted in designated areas outside the ZTL. Look for the blue-line paid parking zones, and confirm height restrictions before entering any underground car park.
We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
Excellent experience. Owner contacted us in advance to arrange a time and pick up location. Owner went into detail at pick up of onboard services and how to use correctly.
André e Raquel são ótimos anfitriões. Eles responderam rapidamente todas as nossas dúvidas e foram muito corretos em tudo que combinamos. Voltaremos a manter contato com eles em uma proxima oportunidade.
We are more than happy about this experience and couldn't be happier with the service. The campervan was spotless and well-prepared when we picked it up. They always responded quickly to our messages and were incredibly friendly and easy to deal with. They provided bed linen, towels, and coffee, which made the trip even more convenient. They also kindly drove us to the airport for our early morning flight, which we really appreciated.Their attention to detail and customer service made all the difference. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a campervan rental in Spain.
Eric was fantastic and an incredible host! Everything was great and he was so helpful, and the car is so smooth to drive and stay in!
We had a fantastic experience renting this campervan! The owners were incredibly kind, helpful, and accommodating with everything. The van itself is well-equipped and drives smoothly. You can really tell that the entire design was put together with a lot of care and love. Highly recommended!"
