Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Umbria

Umbria — a region worth exploring

Umbria is the only landlocked region in central Italy, earning its nickname as the "green heart" of the country thanks to over 7,000 square kilometres of rolling hills, dense forests, and fertile valleys. The region is home to the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that draws visitors from around the world, and the dramatic Cascata delle Marmore, a man-made waterfall dating back to 271 BC that drops 165 metres in three tiers. From Perugia to Spoleto, a drive of roughly 65 km, you pass through landscapes dotted with olive groves and medieval hilltop towns. Head north from Orvieto to Gubbio, around 115 km, and the terrain shifts from tufa cliffs to the wooded slopes of the Apennines. Umbria's compact size makes it ideal for exploring by campervan — narrow country roads wind between ancient borghi, and most towns offer accessible parking areas nearby. Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, provides waterside stops perfect for an overnight stay in a motorhome. Whether you want to explore the Valnerina gorge or wander through the Monti Sibillini National Park on the eastern border, a campervan gives you the flexibility to move at your own pace. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a vehicle directly from local owners across Umbria, choosing from a wide range of sizes and styles to match your travel plans.

Best time to visit

Umbria is wonderful to visit from late spring through to autumn. May and June bring warm days ideal for driving through the countryside, and you can catch the Calendimaggio festival in Assisi during early May, a colourful medieval celebration with parades and music. In July, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia fills the city with world-class performances. Autumn is equally rewarding, with truffle season in full swing around Norcia and Spoleto from October onwards. Campsites across Umbria are generally open from April to October, giving you plenty of choice for pitches. Booking through Yescapa during shoulder months like May or September often means better availability and more competitive peer-to-peer pricing on campervan and motorhome hire.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Umbria

Umbria's main motorway is the E45, a toll-free dual carriageway running north to south through the region, connecting Perugia to Terni. Most major roads in Umbria are toll-free, though if you venture onto the A1 autostrada near Orvieto, tolls apply and can be paid by cash, card, or Telepass. Speed limits for motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes are 130 km/h on motorways and 110 km/h on dual carriageways, dropping to 100 km/h and 80 km/h respectively for heavier vehicles. Many secondary roads in Umbria are narrow and winding, particularly in the Valnerina and around hilltop towns, so take your time and check vehicle height restrictions before entering historic centres.

We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!

Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
