Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes — a region worth exploring

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is home to Mont Blanc, western Europe's highest peak at 4,808 metres, making it a region where alpine grandeur meets volcanic heritage. From the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO-listed chain of 80 dormant volcanoes near Clermont-Ferrand, to the serene shores of Lac d'Annecy, there is an extraordinary range of landscapes to discover by road. The distance from Lyon, the region's capital and a renowned centre of French gastronomy, to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is roughly 220 km, while a drive from Clermont-Ferrand south to the Gorges de l'Ardèche covers around 250 km through ever-changing scenery. Winding mountain passes, wide river valleys along the Rhône, and open plateaux in the Vercors massif all reward travellers who prefer to set their own pace. A campervan gives you the flexibility to linger at a lakeside aire or follow a spontaneous detour into the Beaujolais vineyards, while a motorhome offers the comfort needed for longer alpine circuits. Whether you are drawn to the thermal towns of the Auvergne or the snow-capped panoramas above Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes delivers variety at every turn. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across the region, choosing from a wide selection of vehicles that suit your group size, budget, and travel style.

Best time to visit

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is a year-round destination, with each season offering something distinct. June to September is ideal for touring alpine passes and lakeside campsites, while autumn brings the Fête des Lumières in Lyon every December, a spectacular light festival that draws visitors from across Europe. Spring is perfect for exploring the Chaîne des Puys before summer crowds arrive. Booking a campervan through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive rates outside peak months, so consider a May or October trip for quieter roads and great availability across Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Plan ahead for July and August to secure your preferred vehicle.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes has an extensive motorway network, and most autoroutes are toll roads. The A6, A7, and A43 are major toll routes, payable by card or cash at péage booths. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed differently and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways. Mountain sections, particularly on the A40 towards Mont Blanc, include tunnels and steep gradients — check vehicle height restrictions before setting off. Rest areas with motorhome service points are well spaced along main routes.

We had such a wonderful experience renting Ivan’s camper van for a week! Honestly, everything was even better than we expected. We had absolutely everything we needed — and then some. ❤️ The van was super clean, very well equipped, comfortable, and really performant. One of the things we loved most was the solar setup. We never needed to plug the van into electricity during our trip because the solar panels and battery system worked amazingly well — somehow, the battery just never seemed to run out! It made everything so easy and gave us a lot of freedom during our trip. All the practical things were also incredibly straightforward. Filling up with fresh water, emptying the grey water, and taking care of all the little camper-van things were really easy once Ivan explained everything to us. He made sure we had everything we needed before setting off, and it was clear that he genuinely cared about us having a good experience. And Ivan himself was was incredibly friendly, kind, helpful, and easy to communicate with. He checked in on us after a few days just to make sure everything was going well — not in an intrusive way at all, but in that really nice way where you can tell someone genuinely cares and wants to know that you’re having a good time. 🥰 We had quite a few questions along the way because there’s naturally a lot of information to remember when you first get a camper van, and every time we messaged him, he replied super quickly and was incredibly helpful. He also gave us great recommendations about places to visit and where to go, which made the whole trip even better. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The van was amazing, everything was easy and well thought-out, and Ivan was such a lovely host. If you’re planning a camper van trip along the north coast of Spain, we would absolutely recommend renting from Ivan. You’ll be in very good hands! We would 100% do it again. 🚐☀️❤️

Our hire experience was very smooth, the vehicle was exactly as described and the little extras provided by Jackeline & Juan made us feel welcomed & made the first day or so easier as we got used to van life. J&J were available to answer any questions we had during our trip and though we didn’t speak each other’s native languages we managed perfectly to communicate with AI & the instructive videos provided. Collection & return were easy. All in all a fabulous experience, one we would repeat and highly recommend. 5 Stars all round!
