Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Grand Est

Grand Est — a region worth exploring

Grand Est stretches across 57,400 square kilometres of northeastern France, sharing borders with four countries — Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, and Switzerland. This unique position makes it one of the most culturally diverse regions in France, blending French, Germanic, and Lorraine traditions into a rich tapestry of architecture, cuisine, and language. From the half-timbered villages along the Alsace Wine Route to the Gothic grandeur of Reims Cathedral, where French kings were once crowned, Grand Est rewards those who take the time to explore at their own pace. The drive from Strasbourg to Reims covers roughly 390 km, while Mulhouse to Troyes spans around 340 km, giving you a sense of the region's generous scale. The Vosges Mountains provide forested highlands and winding passes, the Champagne plains roll out endlessly to the west, and the Rhine Valley traces the eastern border with wide, motorhome-friendly roads. Lakes such as Lac de Gérardmer and Lac de Madine offer peaceful waterside stops ideal for campervan travellers. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners based across Grand Est — in cities like Strasbourg, Metz, Nancy, and Reims — giving you the flexibility to start your trip wherever suits you best and discover the region on your own terms.

Best time to visit

Grand Est is a year-round destination with distinct seasonal appeal. May to September offers the warmest weather, ideal for touring the Alsace Wine Route by campervan and attending the Foire aux Vins d'Alsace in Colmar each July. Autumn brings the grape harvest and the famous Strasbourg Christmas Market from late November, one of Europe's oldest. Booking through Yescapa during spring or early autumn often means more competitive peer-to-peer pricing and wider vehicle choice. Plan ahead for summer if you want to explore the Vosges or Champagne countryside, as Grand Est draws steady interest from June onwards.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Grand Est

Grand Est is well connected by autoroutes, including the A4 (Paris–Strasbourg), A26, and A31. Most motorways in the region are toll roads — pay at booths by card or cash, or use a télépéage tag for faster passage. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as Category 2 vehicles and pay higher tolls. Speed limits for these larger vehicles are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single carriageways. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along major routes, particularly on the A4 and A35. The A35 through Alsace is notably toll-free, making it a budget-friendly corridor for campervan travel.
