Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Corsica

Corsica — a region worth exploring

Corsica's GR20 trail stretches 180 kilometres across the island's mountainous spine, widely regarded as one of Europe's most challenging long-distance hiking routes. Yet this French island offers far more than rugged peaks — from the red granite cliffs of the Calanques de Piana to the ancient citadel of Bonifacio perched above limestone sea cliffs, every turn reveals a new landscape. The drive from Bastia in the north to Ajaccio in the south covers roughly 150 kilometres, winding through chestnut forests and mountain passes that make the journey as rewarding as the destination. Along the western coast, the Gulf of Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the eastern plains open up to long sandy beaches and calm lagoons near Ghisonaccia. Corsica's compact size — about 183 kilometres from north to south — makes it ideal for a road trip by campervan, with enough variety to fill weeks of exploration. Narrow mountain roads and scenic coastal stretches reward patient drivers with unforgettable views, and well-placed aires and campsites dot the island from Cap Corse to Porto-Vecchio. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across Corsica, giving you the flexibility to collect your vehicle near a ferry port and set off at your own pace. It is a peer-to-peer approach that keeps costs reasonable while connecting you with people who know the island best.

Best time to visit

Corsica's ferry-friendly location makes it accessible from spring through autumn, with May and June offering wildflower-covered maquis and comfortable temperatures for driving. The Fêtes Napoléoniennes in Ajaccio each August celebrate the island's most famous son with parades and historical re-enactments, while the Festiventu wind festival in Calvi every October draws kite and sailing enthusiasts. Summer is the busiest season, so booking your campervan on Yescapa a few weeks ahead ensures the best choice of vehicles from local owners. September and early October bring warm seas and quieter roads — ideal for a relaxed motorhome tour along the coast. Whichever month you choose, Corsica rewards those who hire early and plan a flexible route.

The best road trips in Corsica

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Corsica Coastal Circuit

350 km 5–8 days

This 350 km loop takes you around Corsica's coastline: from Bastia through Saint-Florent, Calvi, Porto, Ajaccio, and Bonifacio to Porto-Vecchio and back. You experience the island's full variety — from the rugged west coast to the long sandy beaches of the east. A campervan suits the changing road conditions perfectly along this route.

Through the Mountain Heart

280 km 5–8 days

Starting from Corte, this 280 km route crosses the Col de Vergio, passes through the Niolo Valley and the Tavignano Valley, and reaches Vizzavona. You traverse Corsica's mountainous centre with chestnut forests, glacial lakes like Lac de Nino, and traditional hill villages. The roads are narrow but well maintained. Mountain campsites offer a peaceful alternative to the coast.

The Grand Corsica Tour

550 km 10–15 days

This comprehensive 550 km route combines coast and mountains: from Bastia through Cap Corse, Saint-Florent, Calvi, the Calanques de Piana, Ajaccio, Sartène, Bonifacio, Porto-Vecchio, and Corte back to Bastia. You experience the full breadth of Corsica over ten to fourteen days. Motorhomes have plenty of room on the main roads, while mountain sections are better suited to compact vehicles.

The West Coast Cliffs

120 km 3–6 days

This route runs from Ajaccio through the Calanques de Piana to Porto and on towards the Scandola Nature Reserve. Over roughly 120 km, you pass red granite cliffs, secluded coves, and hillside villages. The roads are winding — a campervan is the ideal choice here. Stop in Cargèse to visit its Greek church overlooking the sea.

Cap Corse – the Island's Finger

150 km 4–7 days

This 150 km loop circles the Cap Corse peninsula from Bastia. You pass through the fishing villages of Erbalunga and Centuri, the Genoese tower at Nonza, and the harbour of Macinaggio. The narrow coastal road offers constantly changing views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. A campervan is ideal here, as the roads become very tight in places.

Exploring the Southern Tip

90 km 3–5 days

From Propriano to Bonifacio and on to Porto-Vecchio, this roughly 90 km route crosses Corsica's south. Bonifacio's clifftop old town perched on white limestone is a highlight. Further east, the beaches of Palombaggia and Santa Giulia are well worth a stop. Campsites with motorhome pitches are available along the entire stretch.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Corsica

Corsica has no motorways — the road network consists of national and departmental routes, most notably the N193 connecting Bastia to Ajaccio and the N198 along the eastern coast. There are no toll roads on the island, so travel is straightforward. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Mountain roads, particularly the D84 through the Scala di Santa Regina gorge, can be narrow with tight hairpin bends, so vehicles wider than 2.2 metres should plan routes carefully. Rest areas with water refill points are spaced along the main routes, and fuel stations are less frequent in the interior — fill up before heading inland.

If you’re looking for the perfect camper van, look no further! Sylvia’s van exceeded all of our expectations. It was spotless, incredibly comfortable, and equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need. You can immediately tell how much care and attention Sylvia puts into making sure her guests have the best possible experience. What really made the difference was Sylvia herself. She was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and always quick to respond, making us feel supported from the moment we booked until the end of our trip. Thanks to her amazing van, we had an unforgettable adventure and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. We would happily rent from Sylvia again and recommend her without hesitation to anyone looking for a reliable host and a fantastic camper van.

I loved tripping around the island with this van. It is equipped with many accessories as described, and some basic food condiments to get you started. Sleeping was comfortable, and handling the van itself too!

We had a fantastic trip in Joao's campervan. It was fully equipped with everything we needed. Every window has a mosquito screen, making it very easy to ventilate the van. It is also a very pleasant and reliable vehicle; we had no trouble driving up steep roads. It is an excellent campervan for 'off-grid' travel, as it comes with hot water, a large fridge, a toilet, ample water, and a large gas supply. We also never had any issues with the electricity, thanks to the solar panel. All windows can be blacked out at night. We highly recommend Joao's campervan. Communication was smooth throughout, too! Thank you very much!
