Why choose Bastia for your road trip

Bastia — a city worth exploring

Bastia's Place Saint-Nicolas stretches 280 metres along the seafront, making it one of the largest squares in France and the beating heart of this Corsican port city. The old harbour, known as the Vieux Port, is lined with colourful buildings that reflect off the water, while the Citadelle perched above holds the Palais des Gouverneurs and the Musée de Bastia, which traces the island's history from antiquity to the present day. The twin-towered Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste dominates the harbour skyline and is the largest church in Corsica. Wander through the Terra Vecchia quarter to find artisan shops and local eateries tucked into narrow lanes. Beyond the city, Cap Corse — a rugged peninsula stretching 40 km north — offers dramatic coastal drives with hairpin bends and tiny fishing villages. Corte, the historic mountain capital of Corsica, sits 69 km south and makes a rewarding day trip through the island's interior gorges. Bastia is well connected by ferry to mainland France and Italy, so it serves as a natural starting point for exploring the whole island on wheels. With a motorhome or campervan, you can set your own pace along the winding coastal roads. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners in Bastia and across Corsica, which means personal tips on the best routes and a more affordable, peer-to-peer way to travel.

Best time to visit

Bastia welcomes visitors comfortably from April through October. The Fêtes de la Saint-Jean in late June fill the old town with bonfires, music and processions, while Les Musicales de Bastia in early November bring classical concerts to historic venues across the city. Spring and early autumn are ideal for campervan travel, with quieter roads around Cap Corse and easy access to campsites. Summer is the most popular season, so we recommend booking your vehicle on Yescapa well in advance to lock in the best choice from local owners. Peer-to-peer hire often means more flexible pick-up options and competitive rates compared to peak-season pricing.

Cover 150 km south from Bastia to Ajaccio, Napoleon's birthplace. Tour the Maison Bonaparte museum and stroll the lively Marché Central for Corsican charcuterie and cheese. Along the way, pause at Vizzavona forest for a walk among towering Laricio pines. Campervan-friendly aires de service are spaced along the N193, making the journey easy to break up.

Book a pitch at a nearby campsite with direct beach access for the full coastal experience.

Bastia to Bonifacio

300km southeast 5–8 days

Drive 300 km south-east from Bastia to Bonifacio, perched on dramatic white limestone cliffs at Corsica's southern tip. Where to park your motorhome

Parking a motorhome or campervan in Bastia requires a bit of planning, as the old town streets are narrow and not suited to larger vehicles. Dedicated parking areas on the outskirts and near the port make it straightforward to leave your vehicle and explore on foot. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally tolerated unless signs state otherwise, but always check local signage. For longer stays, a campsite with a proper pitch is the most comfortable option.

  • Parking du Port Toga, 1km north — Large open-air car park near the Toga marina, north of the old port. Suitable for motorhomes and campervans, with easy walking access to the city centre.
  • Parking de la Gare, 1km southwest — Located next to Bastia railway station. Offers flat tarmac spaces that can accommodate larger vehicles. Close to shops and the main bus routes.
  • Parking Aldilonda, 1km east — Near the Aldilonda coastal walkway beneath the Citadelle. Limited spaces for larger vehicles but a convenient spot for a short daytime stop while visiting the old town.

Our stay in Koda was easily the highlight of our trip. We took her on a trip to the south and each day was an unforgettable experience. The van itself was easy enough to drive (a bit of elbow grease to turn from a dead standstill but nothing too bad) and was kitted with absolutely everything we could need. All the small details were so appreciated: lots of crockery, a coffee machine with pods, soap & sponges, extra trash bags, extra gas canisters, lots of charging ports, a speaker, the rooftop with ladder, picnic blanket, tables & chair fairy lights… it was perfect. There was even a solar shower which worked perfectly and gave us so much more freedom. We thought the bed would be a bit too small, but honestly we had more than enough space. The owners, Carina & Rafaela, were also fantastic. They made sure we knew all the little tips & tricks before we set off and were just a message away for any questions we had. We truly appreciated your hospitality and kindness and would love to be back for another stay in Koda!

We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.
