Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Occitania

Occitania — a region worth exploring

Occitanie stretches from the Pyrenees mountains along the Spanish border to the Mediterranean coast, covering over 72,000 square kilometres and making it the second-largest region in mainland France. From the medieval fortress of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the pink-brick elegance of Toulouse and the Roman aqueduct of the Pont du Gard, this region rewards slow, exploratory travel. The Canal du Midi winds 240 km from Toulouse to the Étang de Thau near Sète, offering a peaceful route lined with plane trees and lock gates. Montpellier to Toulouse is roughly 245 km, while the drive from Carcassonne south to the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes in the Pyrenean foothills covers around 110 km. The landscape shifts dramatically as you travel: flat vineyard plains near Narbonne give way to the deep limestone canyons of the Gorges du Tarn, and the high plateaux of the Aubrac offer wide-open spaces ideal for motorhome touring. Coastal aires and mountain campsites are well distributed, so you can plan routes that mix beach days with highland walks. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Occitanie — whether you need a compact campervan for navigating narrow village streets or a larger vehicle for a family adventure through the Pyrenees. The peer-to-peer model means more choice, local tips, and competitive prices throughout the region.

Best time to visit

Occitanie enjoys a long touring season, with May to October offering warm, dry conditions along the Mediterranean coast and in the Pyrenean valleys. June is ideal for catching the Festival de Carcassonne, a month-long celebration of music, theatre, and dance within the medieval citadel. In September, the grape harvest brings lively wine festivals across the Languedoc vineyards. Booking a campervan through Yescapa outside peak July and August lets you benefit from lower peer-to-peer rates and quieter campsites across Occitanie. Spring wildflowers in the Causses and mild autumn light in the Corbières make shoulder seasons especially rewarding for road trips.

The best road trips in Occitania

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Canal du Midi Route

200 km 3–6 days

Follow the 200 km towpath route from Toulouse to Sète along the Canal du Midi. Pass through Castelnaudary, famous for its cassoulet, and the wine town of Béziers. Campervan-friendly aires dot the canal, and the flat terrain makes for relaxed driving across Occitanie.

Tarn Gorges Escape

180 km 3–5 days

This 180 km loop through the Gorges du Tarn takes you from Millau and its soaring viaduct to the village of Sainte-Enimie. Narrow roads suit compact campervans, and riverside campsites in Occitanie offer peaceful overnight stops among limestone cliffs.

Cathar Castles Circuit

350 km 5–8 days

Covering 350 km across Occitanie, this route links the hilltop fortresses of Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, and Montségur. Start from Carcassonne and wind through the Corbières hills. A motorhome gives you the space to camp near each castle and explore at your own pace.

Occitanie Mediterranean Coast

400 km 5–8 days

Drive 400 km along the Occitanie coastline from Collioure near the Spanish border to the Camargue wetlands. Stop at Gruissan's salt flats and the seaside town of Palavas-les-Flots. Coastal aires welcome both campervans and motorhomes throughout the summer season.

Great Pyrenees Route

500 km 7–11 days

Spanning 500 km from Hendaye on the Atlantic side to the thermal town of Bagnères-de-Luchon, this route crosses high mountain passes in Occitanie. Visit the Cirque de Gavarnie and Pic du Midi observatory. Allow extra time for winding roads — a campervan handles the cols well.

Grand Tour of Occitanie

600 km 8–15 days

This 600 km loop connects Toulouse, Albi's Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, the Pont du Gard, and Montpellier before heading inland through Lodève and back. Ideal for a motorhome or campervan trip of 8 to 15 days, it captures the full diversity of Occitanie's landscapes and culture.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Occitania

Occitanie is served by several major motorways, including the A61 linking Toulouse to Narbonne and the A9 running along the Mediterranean coast towards Spain. Most autoroutes are toll roads — you can pay at péage booths by card or cash, and a télépéage tag speeds things up for frequent users. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed as category 2 vehicles, which means higher toll fees and a motorway speed limit of 110 km/h rather than the standard 130 km/h. Mountain routes through the Pyrenees, such as the N20 towards Andorra, may have steep gradients and tight bends, so allow extra time in larger vehicles.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
