Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Algarve

Algarve — a region worth exploring

The Algarve stretches across 150 kilometres of Portugal's southern coastline, home to over 100 beaches and some of Europe's most recognisable rock formations, including the Benagil Sea Cave near Lagoa. From the lively marina town of Vilamoura to the peaceful wetlands of Ria Formosa Natural Park, this region packs extraordinary variety into a compact area — Faro to Sagres is just 113 km, while Faro to Tavira in the east covers a mere 36 km. The western coast around Cabo de São Vicente, mainland Europe's south-westernmost point, offers dramatic cliffs and wide open spaces, while the eastern Algarve unfolds into barrier islands and calm lagoons. Inland, the Serra de Monchique hills rise to 902 metres, providing cooler air and cork oak forests that feel a world away from the coast. Roads here are well-maintained and mostly flat along the shore, making the region ideal for both campervans and larger vehicles. Narrow lanes in hilltop villages like Silves and Monchique add character to any trip, though they reward a slower pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across the Algarve, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know the region best.

Best time to visit

The Algarve enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, making it a fantastic destination across all seasons. Spring brings wildflowers to the Serra de Monchique and comfortable temperatures for coastal walks, while the Algarve International Music Festival in June and July fills towns like Faro and Lagos with live performances. Summer is the most popular season for campervan travel — book early on Yescapa to secure the best choice from local owners. Autumn is ideal for quieter beaches and warm sea temperatures that linger into November. Even winter offers mild days perfect for exploring Sagres or cycling the Ecovia do Litoral. Peer-to-peer hire through Yescapa often means better rates outside peak months.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Algarve

The A22 (Via do Infante) runs the full length of the Algarve from the Spanish border near Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos, and it is a toll motorway. Tolls are electronic only — there are no cash booths, so you need to register your vehicle online or use an EasyToll device at the border. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on national roads. The free alternative, the EN125, runs parallel to the A22 and passes through most towns, though it is slower. Coastal and inland roads are generally well-surfaced, but some routes near Cabo de São Vicente and through the Serra de Monchique feature tighter bends worth taking at a relaxed pace in larger vehicles.

We had a great time and would thoroughly recommend this campervan. We explored Annecy, Lake Geneva and the Jura.

The owner Charlotte was super helpful and very kind. The van worked out perfectly for us as we followed the Tour de France around for a few days. The van has enough room to be comfortable and small enough to navigate the skinny French streets. Fully equipped with anything you would need. A great experience, thanks Charlotte!
