From sleek A-class models to versatile coachbuilts and low-profiles, there’s a motorhome for every adventure—whether you need a compact getaway for two or a spacious multi-berth for the whole family.
The campervan is the ultimate all-rounder. Effortlessly practical and built for freedom, it’s just as at home navigating tight city streets as it is exploring the heart of the countryside.
Madeira's Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, covers roughly 15,000 hectares and represents the largest surviving area of laurel forest in the world. This Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean offers a remarkable network of levada walking trails stretching over 2,500 kilometres, many of which run alongside roads accessible by campervan. From the capital Funchal on the southern coast to the rugged peaks of Pico do Arieiro at 1,818 metres, the island packs extraordinary variety into a compact space — Funchal to Porto Moniz on the northwest coast is just 52 kilometres, while the drive from Santana to Machico covers around 25 kilometres through lush green valleys. Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs at 580 metres, provides unforgettable views, and the natural volcanic pools at Porto Moniz are a must-visit stop on any road trip. The island's winding mountain roads and coastal routes make it a rewarding destination for those who enjoy driving at a relaxed pace. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Madeira, giving you the freedom to explore at your own rhythm while benefiting from personalised tips and competitive peer-to-peer pricing. Whether you want to chase waterfalls near Rabaçal or sample poncha in a fishing village, a campervan lets you turn every corner of this island into your next adventure.
Madeira enjoys a mild subtropical climate year-round, making it a fantastic destination for campervan travel in any season. Spring brings the famous Festa da Flor in Funchal, usually held in May, when the city fills with flower displays and parades. December is equally special, with Madeira's New Year fireworks — recognised by Guinness World Records — lighting up Funchal's bay. Summer months offer warm, settled weather ideal for coastal drives and levada walks, while autumn rewards visitors with quieter roads and golden light. Book through Yescapa during shoulder months like April or October for excellent peer-to-peer rates and wide vehicle availability across Madeira.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Follow Madeira's sunny south coast from Funchal to Calheta, passing through Câmara de Lobos — the fishing village Churchill loved to paint — and the towering glass skywalk at Cabo Girão. This 80 km route suits a campervan perfectly, with well-maintained roads and several beachside parking spots along the way.
Head northwest from Funchal through the Encumeada pass to reach Porto Moniz and its famous natural lava pools. Continue east along Madeira's north coast to Seixal, where a black sand beach sits beneath green cliffs. Around 65 km in total, this route works well in a compact campervan given the narrow northern roads.
Circle the entire island of Madeira on this 120 km route, connecting Funchal, Ribeira Brava, Porto Moniz, São Vicente, Santana, and Machico. You'll pass through traditional A-frame houses in Santana and the laurel forests of the Parque Natural da Madeira. A motorhome handles the south coast easily, though a campervan is more comfortable on the tighter northern stretches.
This 150 km route through Madeira's mountainous interior links Funchal to Pico do Arieiro, Pico Ruivo trailhead, Ribeiro Frio, and the Levada das 25 Fontes near Rabaçal. Expect winding roads and altitude changes up to 1,818 metres. Compact campervans are recommended, and several lay-bys along the route offer overnight spots with mountain views.
Combine Madeira's mountains with Porto Santo's 9 km golden sand beach on this 200 km adventure. Spend several days exploring the main island — Funchal, Curral das Freiras, and the north coast — then take the ferry from Funchal to Porto Santo (about 2.5 hours). A motorhome works well on Porto Santo's flat, open roads, and the island has a relaxed pace ideal for longer stays.
This 250 km itinerary covers every corner of Madeira over 10 to 14 days. Start in Funchal, head west to Paul da Serra plateau, descend to Porto Moniz, cross to Santana, hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, visit Machico, and finish at Ponta de São Lourenço. With time to walk levadas and explore villages, a campervan gives you the flexibility to linger wherever the island surprises you.

Madeira offers a selection of campsites spread across the island, from coastal spots near the sea to mountain retreats surrounded by laurel forest. Facilities typically include electric hook-ups, clean shower and toilet blocks, and dedicated pitches for both campervans and motorhomes. Some sites also provide barbecue areas, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi. Whether you prefer waking up to ocean views on the south coast or forest sounds in the highlands, there is a campsite on Madeira to match your travel style.
Madeira has no toll roads, so you can drive freely across the island without worrying about charges. The Via Rápida (VR1) is the main motorway connecting Funchal to Ribeira Brava and onwards to the north coast, featuring several tunnels carved through the mountains. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are generally 90 km/h on the motorway and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Many secondary roads are narrow and winding with steep gradients, so a campervan is often easier to manoeuvre than a larger vehicle. Rest areas with parking are available along the VR1, and most petrol stations are concentrated around Funchal and larger towns like Machico and Calheta.
Our experience with Yescapa was extremely poor. The pickup location for the camper was incorrect, which caused us to lose both time and money, as we had to take an Uber to the actual location, which we essentially had to figure out ourselves. When we arrived at the Roadsurfer office, they initially refused to rent us the camper because they claimed that my driving licence had not been issued by a country accepted by the company. However, when I made the reservation through Yescapa, I provided all the required information and uploaded photos of my licence. This caused us further delays and additional expenses, as I had to pay for an international driving licence validation. Communication was also very poor. We were basically unable to get in touch with anyone to ask our questions or receive assistance regarding the issues we encountered.
Pepe was lovely from beginning to end. All of our requests were accommodated and he was responsive when needed. The pickup service was very nice, even though we were a bit delayed at the beginning (also around 23.30) he still patiently waited for us at the airport without a hassle. This made the beginning of the trip very nice and the small gift was consumed almost immediately, thank you once again. ;) The van was super also, the bad is very very comfy, I am 183 cms and it was perfect for my height. The AC is a very nice addition also, which made even the staying in the blazing sun bearable in the van. Would recommend both the host and the van to anyone!
We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.
Perfect. Everything went smoothly, good communication, owners very friendly, the vehicle was just as described and in very good condition. We can definitely recommend for future renters!
Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.
