Oeste e Vale do Tejo is home to the Monastery of Alcobaça, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in 1153 and one of the largest Cistercian abbeys in Europe. This central Portuguese region stretches from the Atlantic coastline around Peniche and Nazaré inland to the fertile Tagus valley near Santarém, covering roughly 11,500 square kilometres. From Peniche to Tomar — site of the remarkable Convent of Christ — the drive is around 130 km, while the coastal run from Ericeira to Nazaré covers approximately 120 km of winding seaside roads. Along the way you can explore the Berlengas Nature Reserve by boat from Peniche harbour, walk the dinosaur footprints at the Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, or wander the medieval streets of Óbidos, still encircled by its 14th-century walls. The landscape shifts from dramatic sea cliffs and long sandy beaches to rolling vineyards and limestone plateaus, making it ideal territory for a campervan adventure at your own pace. Quieter inland roads suit larger motorhome layouts, while the narrow coastal stretches reward compact vehicles with easy parking and access to surf spots. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform you can hire directly from local owners based across the region — in towns like Caldas da Rainha, Torres Vedras, and Santarém — choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your route and group size.
The best months to hire a campervan in Oeste e Vale do Tejo run from May to October, when warm Atlantic breezes keep the coast comfortable and inland valleys enjoy long, dry days. In July, the medieval festival Mercado Medieval de Óbidos transforms the walled town into a lively celebration of history, food, and theatre. Autumn brings the grape harvest season around the Ribatejo wine country near Santarém, perfect for slow touring through vineyard-lined roads. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive pricing outside peak summer, so consider a September or early October trip for quieter campsites and great availability across Oeste e Vale do Tejo.

Rest areas with spacious parking bays appear regularly along the A8 and A1, making them convenient for breaks in larger campervans.
Brenda si è rivelata disponibile sin dal primo momento. Il van non ci ha dato alcun tipo di problema e ci ha permesso di visitare meravigliosi posti nella parte nord dell’isola regalandoci albe e tramonti indimenticabili. Super consigliato! ☀️
We couldn’t have asked for a better first experience with YesCapa! A-Z, just great. Claudio was very kind and friendly, texting on the app and when we met at the pick-up. The review of the car was easy going, no rush at all, yet felt very professional. From the formal, general information to the little specs and hacks that would improve our trip. Claudio also gave us tips and recommendations for our route and even offered to store some of our luggage so our trip will be more convenient- Thanks! The car is very easy and smooth to drive. Highways or a gravel road to camp, runs perfectly. We didn’t have a single problem. Another great feature is that it’s practically a private so no problem parking it anywhere, including zones where motorhomes and towable home are not aloud. As for the “home” aspect of the car, it takes a day or two to get the hang of the transformations. Personally, I’m an “analog” person and prefer to push/pull until I hear the ‘click’. Once or twice and everything worked fine. The inside table, Kitchen, fridge, pop-up roof, bed and more. We cooked every day of our trip, very functional. Claudio and Pamela were easy-going and welcoming on our return to the drop-off the car. To sum it up, If you’re in for a classic and smooth experience for your trip, we highly recommend renting Claudio and Pamela’s Vito!
Fue un placer recibir a Valentina! Cuidó muy bien de nuestra autocaravana. Totalmente recomendable para otros propietarios de Yescapa!
Fantastic guests! They are such lovely and positive people, it was a real pleasure hosting them. I was absolutely thrilled to hear that they were delighted with the camper and that everything was perfect for them. Thank you so much for the wonderful gesture and the bottle of wine, that was such a nice surprise. Highly recommended to any host, and you are always welcome back!
It was ok
