Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Atlantic

Atlantic — a region worth exploring

France's Atlantic coast stretches over 720 kilometres from the Basque Country border near Hendaye to the tip of the Île de Ré, threading together some of Europe's most rewarding coastal driving. The Dune of Pilat near Arcachon rises to 110 metres, making it the tallest sand dune in Europe and a landmark visible from miles around. From Biarritz, known for its Grande Plage and world-class surf breaks, to the fortified harbour of La Rochelle roughly 390 kilometres to the north, the route passes through pine-scented Landes forest, the oyster villages of Cap Ferret, and the Médoc wine estates lining the Gironde estuary. Inland, the Marais Poitevin — often called the Green Venice — offers a network of tree-canopied waterways ideal for a slower pace. The distance from Bordeaux to Royan is about 120 kilometres, an easy day's drive with stops at Talmont-sur-Gironde's Romanesque clifftop church. Roads along the Atlantic coast are largely flat and well-surfaced, suiting both compact campervans and larger motorhomes equally well. With Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners based in cities like Bordeaux, La Rochelle, and Bayonne, giving you the flexibility to start your Atlantic adventure wherever it suits you best.

Best time to visit

The Atlantic coast comes alive from May to October, with long daylight hours and warm temperatures ideal for beach stops and coastal drives. June is especially appealing — the Fêtes de Bayonne in late July draws over a million visitors for five days of music and Basque culture, while the Francofolies music festival lights up La Rochelle each July. Shoulder months like May and September offer quieter campsites and pleasant conditions for exploring by campervan. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means more competitive rates outside peak summer weeks, so hiring a motorhome in early June or September can be a smart move for your Atlantic road trip.

180 km 3–5 days

A compact 180 km circuit around the Bassin d'Arcachon over 3–5 days. Stop at the Dune of Pilat, explore Cap Ferret's oyster villages, and cycle the pine-shaded trails of Lège. Ideal for a campervan with easy parking throughout.

Vineyards and the Gironde Estuary

400 km 5–8 days

The Atlantic and Basque Country Loop

600 km 8–15 days

An epic 600 km route over 8–15 days combining Atlantic beaches with the green hills of the Basque interior. Drive from Bordeaux through Bayonne and Espelette, famous for its red peppers, before looping back via Pau. A campervan handles the winding Basque roads well.

Most of the Atlantic coast is served by the A63 and A10 motorways, both of which are toll roads. Tolls are paid at booths by card or cash, and a Bordeaux–Bayonne run on the A63 costs around €20 for a standard vehicle. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are classed in a higher toll category and pay roughly 50% more. Speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are 110 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on single-carriageway roads. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome service points appear regularly along the A10 corridor, making long drives comfortable.

Daniel was very professional, explained all aspects of how the van and its accessories and furnishings functioned. Provided sheets, blankets, curtains and window coverings, and even coffee and tea! He was kind and helped me fill the tank at the end when my credit card didn’t work took us to a different station without complaining. We had no issues with the van but he was available by phone at any time if we would have needed him. It was a fantastic trip and we loved the camper van.

We booked the van for our time on Crete and had a really beautiful trip :) We explored the south of the island and loved every moment of it. The van was easy to drive, comfy and homey, and everything was just as pictured. Beforehand we received videos that explained and showed us everything, so we felt well prepared from the start. Everything fit and worked perfectly. Meven was always helpful, friendly and caring in his communication. Thank you so much for the experience, it was a truly magical time :)

Christophe was great to deal with. He responded promptly to all of our queries prior to our journey. The vehicle was exactly as advertised, well-equipped and spotlessly clean. Collection and drop-off was easy. The hand-over of the vehicle was comprehensive and we felt confident as we began our journey. We highly recommend!
