Bavaria's Romantic Road stretches 460 kilometres from Würzburg to Füssen, making it one of Germany's oldest and most celebrated touring routes. The region covers a vast area in the south-east of the country, from the Bavarian Forest along the Czech border to the towering peaks of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain at 2,962 metres. Between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, roughly 90 kilometres apart, you'll find alpine meadows, glacial lakes like Eibsee and Tegernsee, and fairy-tale castles including Neuschwanstein and Linderhof. Heading north, Nuremberg sits around 170 kilometres from Munich and offers a fascinating mix of medieval architecture and living history. Bavaria's roads are well-maintained and suited to larger vehicles, though some alpine passes require careful navigation. Lakeside aires and farm-based stopovers are common across the region, giving you the freedom to wake up surrounded by mountains or rolling countryside. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Bavaria — whether you need a compact campervan for winding mountain roads or a spacious motorhome for a family tour of the region's breweries and biergartens. The peer-to-peer model means a wider choice of vehicles at pick-up points throughout the region, from Munich to Regensburg and beyond.
Bavaria welcomes travellers from spring through to autumn, with each month offering something distinct. The Munich Oktoberfest, running from late September into early October, is a highlight for anyone touring the region by campervan. In June, the Bergkirchweih festival in Erlangen draws crowds to one of Germany's largest open-air beer celebrations. Summer brings long daylight hours ideal for exploring alpine lakes and mountain trails, while September and October reward you with golden forests and quieter campsites. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive rates outside peak summer weeks, and local owners can share tips on the best seasonal routes across Bavaria.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
Start in Füssen and visit Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle before heading via Oberammergau to Linderhof Palace. Around 180 km through the Bavarian foothills with plenty of campervan pitches along the way. The route follows well-maintained roads with views of the Ammergau Alps.
From Bamberg, explore Franconian Switzerland with its distinctive rock formations and over 1,000 caves. Via Pottenstein and the Teufelshöhle cave, continue to Bayreuth and its Margravial Opera House. Around 250 km on winding roads — ideal for a campervan. Numerous small breweries along the route invite you to stop and sample local brews.
From Würzburg to Füssen, the Romantic Road covers around 420 km through medieval towns and gentle rolling hills. Highlights include Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, and Augsburg. The route is wide enough for any motorhome and offers regular pitches. In autumn, vineyards and colourful forests create a memorable atmosphere along this classic Bavarian route.
This legendary route runs from Lindau on Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden, crossing the entire Bavarian Alpine foothills. Over roughly 350 km you pass Tegernsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the Zugspitze. The road is well suited for motorhomes, though some sections have height restrictions. Campsites with mountain panoramas are plentiful along the way.
This comprehensive tour connects Munich, Regensburg, Nuremberg, and Augsburg over roughly 550 km. You can experience the Danube at the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, the Imperial Castle in Nuremberg, and the Fuggerei in Augsburg. The route mostly follows motorways and federal roads, easily navigable in any campervan. Plan stops at the many bathing lakes scattered across Bavaria.
This extended route connects Bavaria's finest lakes and mountain landscapes over roughly 600 km. From Chiemsee with Herrenchiemsee island, head via Walchensee and Starnberger See to Lake Constance at Lindau. Along the way you cross the Wetterstein and Mangfall mountain ranges. Bavaria offers a wide variety of campsites — from pitches right on Alpine lakes to sites in the Franconian wine country and forested grounds in the Bavarian Forest. Many sites provide electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal stations, and modern sanitary facilities suitable for both motorhomes and campervans. Several campsites in Bavaria also feature wellness areas and bakery delivery services.
Bavaria's motorway network is part of Germany's famous Autobahn system, which is toll-free for cars and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must register for the Maut toll system on certain routes. While some Autobahn sections have no speed limit for cars, motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are restricted to 100 km/h, and those under 3.5 tonnes to 130 km/h on unrestricted stretches. The A8 connects Munich to Salzburg and the A9 runs north to Nuremberg — both are well-equipped with rest areas featuring fuel, food and sanitary facilities. Mountain roads in the Bavarian Alps may have gradient warnings and occasional width restrictions, so check your vehicle dimensions before heading into alpine valleys.
Merci pour la confiance que tu m’as accordé pour notre première location de van à chacun ! Très gentille, sérieuse, tolérante et bonne conductrice.
Xavier was friendly from the first time we spoke, he described his 4x4 very well and gace us some useful tips about Corsica. When we arrived he done everything that we settle for the first night and explained how every si gle part of his 4x4 works which os really cool car.
Kori and Rachel were fantastic guests, super kind and fun. The communication with them was easy, and what I appriciate the most is how well they were taking care about our van. I can defenetly reccommed them, they were great guests. Thank you again :)
Highly reccomend! This is an easy and fun to drive Camper with a very comfortable and cozy bed, well outfitted with an excellent cooking system. Spacious with nice privacy glass throughout and rooftop vent. Pick up was fast and easy. It was the perfect vehicle to explore in for almost two weeks. Would definitely rent again!
Our experience with Yescapa was extremely poor. The pickup location for the camper was incorrect, which caused us to lose both time and money, as we had to take an Uber to the actual location, which we essentially had to figure out ourselves. When we arrived at the Roadsurfer office, they initially refused to rent us the camper because they claimed that my driving licence had not been issued by a country accepted by the company. However, when I made the reservation through Yescapa, I provided all the required information and uploaded photos of my licence. This caused us further delays and additional expenses, as I had to pay for an international driving licence validation. Communication was also very poor. We were basically unable to get in touch with anyone to ask our questions or receive assistance regarding the issues we encountered.
