Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Finlandia

Finlandia — a country worth exploring

Finland stretches across 338,455 square kilometres between the 60th and 70th parallels, making it the northernmost country in the EU and home to over 188,000 lakes. From the capital Helsinki to the Arctic wilderness of Lapland, the landscape shifts from coastal archipelagos to vast boreal forests, offering a road trip experience unlike anywhere else in Europe. The drive from Helsinki to Utsjoki, Finland's northernmost municipality, covers roughly 1,270 km, while the 170 km route from Tampere to Jyväskylä passes through the heart of the Finnish Lakeland. Must-see landmarks include Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site guarding Helsinki's harbour, the towering sand ridges of Punkaharju Nature Reserve, the striking Olavinlinna Castle in Savonlinna, and the wild expanses of Urho Kekkonen National Park near Saariselkä. Finnish roads are well maintained and generally uncrowded, which makes them ideal for campervan and motorhome travel — even on single-lane routes through Lapland. Finland also upholds the Everyman's Right, allowing travellers to camp responsibly in nature, a real bonus for those exploring by campervan. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Finland, choosing from a wide range of vehicles suited to lakeside getaways or Arctic adventures. This peer-to-peer approach means competitive prices and personal tips from people who know Finland best.

Best time to visit

Finland's campervan season runs from May to September, when daylight stretches well beyond twenty hours in the north. June is ideal for experiencing the Midnight Sun in Lapland, while the Savonlinna Opera Festival in July draws visitors to its lakeside castle stage. August brings the berry-picking season and quieter roads as Finnish schools resume. For those who prefer fewer fellow travellers, May and September offer mild conditions and lower hire rates. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means better value outside peak summer months, as local owners set flexible pricing. Plan ahead for June and July to secure your preferred motorhome or campervan.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Finlandia

Finland has no toll roads, so you can travel the entire country without paying any road fees. The speed limit on motorways is typically 120 km/h for cars, but motorhomes over 3,500 kg are limited to 80 km/h on all roads. Main highways such as the E75 running north from Helsinki to Lapland are well surfaced and clearly signposted in Finnish and Swedish. Rest areas with waste disposal points appear regularly along major routes. In northern Finland, watch for reindeer on the road, especially from autumn onwards. Winter tyres are compulsory from November to March, so check your vehicle's equipment if travelling in shoulder season.

Simone and his partner were very nice and friendly, eager to get to know everything about the motorhome. They were very attentive and considerate during the handover, as well as easy to communicate with throughout their trip. They treated my motorhome with care and respect and certainly did their best to return it in the condition in which they received it. It was a pleasure having them as my guests, and I highly recommend them to other owners.
