München's Frauenkirche, with its distinctive twin onion-domed towers rising 99 metres, has defined the city skyline since 1488. As Bavaria's capital, München blends centuries of royal heritage with a relaxed, outdoor-loving culture that makes it a rewarding base for any road trip. Stroll through the vast Englischer Garten, one of the world's largest urban parks, or explore the Deutsches Museum on its island in the River Isar — the world's biggest science and technology museum. Art lovers will find world-class collections at the Alte Pinakothek, while the Residenz München offers over 130 rooms of palatial grandeur. The city sits on a broad plain at the edge of the Bavarian Alps, so the roads south open up quickly to mountain passes and lake shores. Salzburg is just 145 km to the east, and Lake Starnberg lies only 30 km to the south-west, giving you easy day-trip options. München's wide, well-maintained roads and generous parking infrastructure make it comfortable to navigate in larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the city, which means you often collect your campervan or motorhome from a residential neighbourhood and get first-hand tips on the best routes out of town. That peer-to-peer approach keeps costs fair and adds a personal touch before you even hit the road.
München welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering something special. The world-famous Oktoberfest runs from mid-September to early October, drawing millions — book your campervan well ahead to secure the best choice. The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz lights up from late November through December, making winter a magical time to visit. Summer months bring long daylight hours ideal for exploring the Bavarian Alps by motorhome, and campsites around München are fully open with all facilities. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value than traditional hire, especially in shoulder months like May or early October when availability is generous and the weather is pleasant for driving.
Munich is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Just 30 km south-west of Munich, Lake Starnberg is one of Upper Bavaria's most scenic lakes. Stroll through the Roseninsel gardens and visit the Votivkapelle in Berg. The lakeshore roads are calm and well-suited for a campervan tour around the water. Campsites on the western shore offer pitches right by the lake.
Around 90 km south of Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen sits at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak. Take the cogwheel railway to the summit and explore the Partnachklamm gorge. The B2 road runs smoothly through the Loisach valley. Spacious motorhome pitches are available near the Olympia-Skistadion.
Head south-east from Munich and reach Chiemsee after 95 km, where Schloss Herrenchiemsee sits on its own island. Continue 75 km to Berchtesgaden for the Königssee and the Kehlsteinhaus. The A8 motorway makes the drive swift and straightforward. Campsites on Chiemsee's shores offer lakeside pitches perfect for a campervan stopover.
Roughly 180 km north-west of Munich, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns. Walk the fully accessible town wall and visit the Kriminalmuseum. En route, stop in Nördlingen to see its meteorite crater. The Romantic Road passes through picturesque villages — ideal for leisurely motorhome stages.
Around 280 km west of Munich, Lake Constance stretches along the borders of Austria and Switzerland. Visit the flower island of Mainau and the stilt-house museum in Unteruhldingen. Along the way, Memmingen's historic old town is worth a detour. The A96 takes you straight to Lindau, from where you can drive your campervan along the lakeshore. Pitches with lake access are plentiful.
About 170 km north of Munich, Nuremberg awaits with its Kaiserburg castle and the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. From there it is just 30 km into Franconian Switzerland, known for over 1,000 caves and dramatic rock formations. Visit the Teufelshöhle near Pottenstein and hike through the Wiesent valley. The A9 gets you to Nuremberg quickly, and the country roads of Franconian Switzerland are well suited to motorhome travel.

Great experience. Enjoyed the campervan a lot, it was spacious and nice to drive. The owner Diogo was also very helpful and supportive with everything. I recommend
We rented the van for 10 days and had an amazing time! The van isn't isn't new but it's in great mechanical condition and well maintained. We had zero problems and highly recommend!
Carrinha muito viável, confortável e espaçosa. Casa de banho extremamente conviniente. O dono é extremamente simpático e sempre disponível a tirar qualquer dúvida. Experiência a repetir sem dúvida.
We had an outstanding experience renting from Antonio and his family. Antonio and his son Ricardo provided clear, thorough instructions on operating the camper, ensuring we felt confident from the start. Throughout the trip, Ricardo's communication and support were excellent—always responsive and helpful. At the end of the rental, their evaluation was fair, transparent, and reasonable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a smooth camper rental experience!
Absolutely perfect. The vehicle was exactly as described and equipped with everything necessary for a perfect stay. We had a great time and would love to book it again the next time we are in France 🇫🇷
Amazing trip! I travelled with a friend all around the Dolomites in Nicola's van. It was incredible, it couldn't have gone better. The van is fully equipped with everything you need. We did feel a little cold the first night so we got some blankets at a local shop to upgrade the ones available in the van. The only thing worth mentioning is that the pick-up/drop-off location is a bit inconvenient (relatively far away), but for the price and quality, it's definitely worth it. The hosts were super attentive to everything we needed. Thank you!
