Why choose Munich for your road trip

Munich — a city worth exploring

München's Frauenkirche, with its distinctive twin onion-domed towers rising 99 metres, has defined the city skyline since 1488. As Bavaria's capital, München blends centuries of royal heritage with a relaxed, outdoor-loving culture that makes it a rewarding base for any road trip. Stroll through the vast Englischer Garten, one of the world's largest urban parks, or explore the Deutsches Museum on its island in the River Isar — the world's biggest science and technology museum. Art lovers will find world-class collections at the Alte Pinakothek, while the Residenz München offers over 130 rooms of palatial grandeur. The city sits on a broad plain at the edge of the Bavarian Alps, so the roads south open up quickly to mountain passes and lake shores. Salzburg is just 145 km to the east, and Lake Starnberg lies only 30 km to the south-west, giving you easy day-trip options. München's wide, well-maintained roads and generous parking infrastructure make it comfortable to navigate in larger vehicles. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across the city, which means you often collect your campervan or motorhome from a residential neighbourhood and get first-hand tips on the best routes out of town. That peer-to-peer approach keeps costs fair and adds a personal touch before you even hit the road.

Best time to visit

München welcomes visitors year-round, with each season offering something special. The world-famous Oktoberfest runs from mid-September to early October, drawing millions — book your campervan well ahead to secure the best choice. The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz lights up from late November through December, making winter a magical time to visit. Summer months bring long daylight hours ideal for exploring the Bavarian Alps by motorhome, and campsites around München are fully open with all facilities. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value than traditional hire, especially in shoulder months like May or early October when availability is generous and the weather is pleasant for driving.

Where to park your motorhome

München offers several dedicated parking areas for larger vehicles, though overnight parking on public streets is generally not permitted for motorhomes. The city enforces environmental zones (Umweltzone), so make sure your vehicle carries a valid green sticker before entering the city centre. Dedicated motorhome parking areas provide a practical alternative, often with basic services such as fresh water and waste disposal. We recommend arriving early during peak season, as spaces fill up quickly at the most central locations.

  • Wohnmobilstellplatz München-Freimann, 8km north — Dedicated motorhome parking area in the north of the city with electricity, fresh water and waste disposal. Easy U-Bahn access to the centre.
  • P+R Fröttmaning, 10km north — Large park-and-ride car park near the Allianz Arena with space for larger vehicles. Connected to the U6 underground line for quick city centre access.
  • Wohnmobilstellplatz Langwieder See, 15km west — Peaceful lakeside motorhome parking west of the city with basic facilities. Ideal for an overnight stop with swimming access in summer.

Renting Gabriel’s van was honestly one of the best parts of my trip. The van has so much personality and charm — it felt cozy, reliable, and full of good energy from the moment I picked it up. I loved waking up in different places, making coffee with amazing views, and having the freedom to go wherever I wanted.Gabriel was amazing as well. Super kind, easygoing, and always available if I needed anything. He explained everything clearly and made me feel comfortable straight away. This isn’t just a camper van, it’s an experience. You can tell it has been loved and cared for. I left with beautiful memories and would absolutely rent it again without hesitation.Thank you Gabriel for sharing your little home on wheels with me :)

Great experience renting with a child and a dog. Carina was an amazing host—always in touch and very supportive. She even met us before the payment to check if our larger car seat would fit the Isofix, and she welcomed our dog for free, even giving us a nice blanket for him.The camper was in good condition. The only downside was having just one gas bottle instead of the usual two. It ran out unexpectedly at night, and since gas bottles were not available at the gas stations along our way, we couldn't get a replacement. As a result, we spent the last 2.5 days of our trip without heating or the stove. Other than that, everything was perfect. Highly recommended!
