Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost state, bordered by two seas — the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east, connected by the 98-kilometre Kiel Canal, one of the world's busiest artificial waterways. This dual-coast geography makes it a remarkable destination for a campervan road trip, with flat coastal roads, sweeping dyke landscapes, and island-hopping opportunities rarely found elsewhere in central Europe. From the harbour city of Flensburg near the Danish border to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck roughly 160 kilometres to the south-east, the region is packed with variety. Explore the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park on the west coast, walk the red cliffs of Helgoland, or cycle through the rolling hills of Holsteinische Schweiz (Holstein Switzerland) with its 200-plus lakes. The island of Fehmarn, linked to the mainland by the Fehmarnsund Bridge, is a favourite among campervan travellers for its reliable breezes and long sandy beaches. Motorhome-friendly routes wind through charming fishing villages, past lighthouses, and along quiet stretches of coastline where you can park up and breathe in the sea air. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan or motorhome directly from local owners across Schleswig-Holstein — from Kiel and Lübeck to smaller towns closer to the coast — giving you the flexibility to start your trip exactly where it suits you.
The best time to hire a campervan in Schleswig-Holstein runs from May to September, when long daylight hours and mild coastal temperatures make both the North Sea and Baltic coasts a joy to explore. June brings the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), one of the world's largest sailing events, drawing visitors from across Europe. In autumn, the Biikebrennen fire festivals light up the North Frisian coast each February, offering a unique cultural experience. Shoulder months like May and September are ideal for quieter campsites and more relaxed driving. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer model, you can often find competitive rates outside peak summer, making a Schleswig-Holstein motorhome trip great value year-round.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

Schleswig-Holstein offers a wide choice of campsites spread between its two coastlines and peaceful interior. Whether you are travelling in a compact campervan or a larger motorhome, you will find pitches with electric hook-ups, fresh water, waste disposal, showers, and toilets. Coastal sites on Fehmarn and along the North Sea dykes often include direct beach access, while inland parks near the Holstein lakes provide quieter, nature-focused stays across Schleswig-Holstein.
Schleswig-Holstein's motorways (Autobahn) are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 7.5 tonnes, making it easy to move between coasts without extra costs. The A1 and A7 are the main north–south routes, while the A23 heads towards the North Sea coast. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are capped at 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on rural roads. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well spaced along major routes. Roads across the region are generally flat and well maintained, so even larger vehicles handle comfortably.

Ok
We had a truly wonderful experience with Tobia and his motorhome. The vehicle was in perfect condition, practically like new, very clean, comfortable, and extremely well maintained. It was the perfect companion for our summer family trip and gave us everything we needed for a fantastic camping experience. From even before the pick-up, communication with Tobia was excellent. He was always responsive, helpful, and genuinely did his best to solve any issues, provide us with all the information we needed, and take our particular situation into consideration. We really appreciated his kindness and flexibility throughout the whole rental. The motorhome itself was very comfortable to drive and surprisingly fuel-efficient, which was a big plus during our long trip. We spent several weeks travelling with it as a family, and it truly made our summer holiday very special and memorable. I would highly recommend both Tobia and this motorhome to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. We would definitely choose this motorhome again for our next trip. Thank you, Tobia, for helping make our family holiday such a great experience!
Todo genial. Gracias
