Thuringia's Rennsteig trail stretches 169 km along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, making it Germany's oldest and most popular long-distance hiking path. This central German state packs an extraordinary amount of history and nature into a compact area. Erfurt, the capital, is home to the Krämerbrücke, the longest inhabited bridge in Europe, while Weimar — just 25 km away — draws visitors to the Bauhaus Museum and the homes of Goethe and Schiller. From Weimar, it is roughly 130 km south-west to the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German. The landscape shifts from the forested hills of the Thuringian Forest to the open farmland of the Thuringian Basin, with the Saale Valley carving through the east of the region. Narrow roads wind through villages and past reservoirs like the Bleilochtalsperre, Germany's largest artificial lake by volume. These varied routes are ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome, with plenty of well-maintained stopovers along the way. Through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across Thuringia — in Erfurt, Jena, or smaller towns — choosing from a wide range of vehicles to match your travel style and group size. It is a practical, personal way to discover a region that rewards slow, flexible travel.
May to October is the prime window for a campervan trip through Thuringia, when forest trails and open-air attractions are at their best. The Weimarer Zwiebelmarkt in October, one of Germany's oldest folk festivals, is a memorable stop. Summer brings long days perfect for driving the Rennsteig route, while September and early October offer golden autumn colours across the Thuringian Forest. Campsites throughout the region are fully open from spring to autumn. Booking through Yescapa during the shoulder months of May or September often means more choice and better peer-to-peer rates on motorhome hire.
To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.
This 180 km loop links Erfurt, Weimar, and Jena — three of Thuringia's most storied cities. Allow 3–6 days to explore the Krämerbrücke, the Bauhaus Museum, and the Zeiss Planetarium. Ideal for campervans, with well-placed campsites between each stop.
Follow 150 km along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest, passing through Oberhof and Neustadt am Rennsteig. Over 3–5 days, enjoy forest viewpoints and trailhead parking areas suited to compact campervans. Roads are winding but well surfaced.
A 280 km route over 5–8 days taking in the Wartburg in Eisenach and the Dornburger Schlösser above the Saale Valley. This tour suits both motorhomes and campervans, with overnight options near each castle and scenic stretches through rolling countryside.
Covering 350 km in 5–8 days, this route follows the Saale River south from Jena to the Bleilochtalsperre and Hohenwarte reservoirs. Lakeside campsites welcome motorhomes with full hook-ups. Expect quiet roads and plenty of waterside stops for swimming and walking.
At 520 km over 7–11 days, this route circles the entire state, from Erfurt north to Mühlhausen, east to Altenburg, and back through the Thuringian Forest. A great way to see the full variety of Thuringia by campervan or motorhome.

Thuringia offers a good spread of campsites, from forested spots in the Thuringian Forest to lakeside pitches beside the Saale reservoirs. Most sites provide electric hook-ups, modern shower and toilet blocks, and dedicated motorhome service points for fresh water and waste disposal. Many campsites also welcome campervans on smaller pitches with easy access. Whether you are heading for the hills or staying near a cultural city, you will find a well-equipped base across the region.
Thuringia's motorways are toll-free for campervans and motorhomes under 3.5 tonnes. Heavier vehicles require a toll box for the German Maut system. The A4 runs east–west through the region, connecting Eisenach to Jena, while the A71 and A73 cross the Thuringian Forest via modern tunnels, including the Rennsteigtunnel — Germany's longest road tunnel at nearly 8 km. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 80 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on motorways. Rest areas with dedicated motorhome parking are well signposted along major routes.
Very good communication with the owner. Easy procedure. The van is in excellent condition and a joy to travel with for a small family.
Martino and his friends were great guests! There were some issues with the motorhome but they communicated very professionally and respectfully all the time. We provide a replacement vehicle for them. They treated the motorhome as their own and took great care of it. Totally recommend them!
Really great rental, campervan was in great condition and very well kept. Easy to collect and the staff were very helpful despite my lack of French. We loved driving the van, it was so easy get around and to set up when we arrived at campsites. Some bedding might have been useful but a Hypermarket was not far away to stock up on that and food. Thanks for the great experience :o)
A fantastic experience from beginning to end. The owner was incredibly kind, available, professional and genuinely a pleasure to deal with. Everything was extremely easy and smooth throughout the entire process: the communication before our trip, the pick-up, the week we spent with the motorhome, the drop-off and even the communication afterwards. The motorhome itself was a 10/10. It was practically brand new, in excellent condition, very comfortable and perfectly equipped for our trip. At pick-up, the owner took plenty of time to give us a thorough walkthrough and explain how everything worked. He also pointed out the more delicate parts of the vehicle and what we should pay particular attention to. We really appreciated this because it helped us understand the motorhome properly and take better care of it throughout our trip. More than anything, the whole experience felt easy and trustworthy. A beautiful motorhome and an excellent owner who genuinely cares about both his vehicle and the people renting it. We would happily rent from him again and can highly recommend him to anyone considering this motorhome.
Great experience! The owner was very kind and flexible. he gave us the vehicle in perfect state, clean, functioning and with all the things needed. The vehicle worked perfect all the trip. We highly recommend this owner!
