Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Balearic Islands

Balearic Islands — a region worth exploring

The Balearic Islands stretch across 5,014 square kilometres of the western Mediterranean, with Mallorca alone boasting over 260 beaches along its 555-kilometre coastline. This Spanish archipelago — made up of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera — offers a remarkable variety of landscapes for its size. In Mallorca, the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises to 1,445 metres at Puig Major, while Menorca holds the distinction of being a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. From Palma de Mallorca to Ciutadella de Menorca, the ferry crossing covers roughly 90 kilometres, and driving across Mallorca from Palma to Alcúdia takes about 60 kilometres through rolling countryside and charming villages. The islands reward slow travel: winding coastal roads reveal turquoise coves, hilltop monasteries like Santuari de Lluc, and traditional markets in towns such as Sineu and Artà. Exploring by campervan gives you the freedom to follow the coast at your own pace, park near quiet beaches, and wake up to sea views. A motorhome is ideal for families wanting extra space on longer island stays. Through Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based across the Balearic Islands, choosing from a range of vehicles that suit your group and your route — making peer-to-peer sharing a practical and personal way to discover these islands.

Best time to visit

The Balearic Islands enjoy a long travel season, with April to October offering warm days and calm seas. Spring is ideal for cycling the Serra de Tramuntana or catching the Fira del Ram fair in Palma, which runs from late March into April. Summer brings lively fiestas — the Festes de Sant Joan in Ciutadella each June is a spectacular celebration of horsemanship and fireworks. Autumn rewards with quieter roads and pleasant temperatures for coastal drives. Through Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing means you can often find better rates outside peak summer months, and booking a campervan early for July and August ensures the widest choice of vehicles across the Balearic Islands.

The best road trips in Balearic Islands

To help you plan your trip, we have selected six unmissable road trips, suitable for all travelers.

The Tramuntana Mountain Route

180 km 3–6 days

Wind through Mallorca's UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana from Andratx to Pollença, covering around 180 km. Stop at the hilltop village of Valldemossa, visit the gardens of Alfabia, and take in the views from Cap de Formentor. A campervan handles the narrow mountain roads well, and there are scenic pull-offs throughout.

Menorca Coast to Coast

150 km 3–5 days

Cross Menorca from Maó to Ciutadella, roughly 150 km including coastal detours. Explore the prehistoric Naveta des Tudons, swim at Cala Macarella, and wander the harbour of Fornells. The island's flat terrain and quiet roads make it perfect for a relaxed motorhome trip, with well-spaced campsites along the way.

Mallorca's Eastern Coves

250 km 5–8 days

Follow Mallorca's eastern coastline from Artà to Santanyí, around 250 km with detours to the best coves. Visit the Coves del Drac in Porto Cristo, explore the weekly market in Artà, and swim at Cala Mondragó. This route suits both campervans and motorhomes, with several well-equipped campsites near the coast in the Balearic Islands.

The Full Mallorca Loop

300 km 5–8 days

Circle the entire island of Mallorca on a 300 km loop starting and ending in Palma. Pass through Sóller and its vintage tram, the cape at Formentor, the fishing port of Cala Figuera, and the salt flats of Es Trenc. This route covers the full diversity of the Balearic Islands' largest island, with campsites and service areas well placed for overnight stops.

Ibiza's Quiet North

100 km 3–6 days

Explore the peaceful northern half of Ibiza over roughly 100 km, from Sant Antoni de Portmany to Santa Eulària des Riu. Discover the hilltop church of Sant Joan de Labritja, the secluded beach of Cala Xarraca, and the craft market at Las Dalias. A campervan is ideal for Ibiza's narrow rural lanes and smaller parking areas in the Balearic Islands.

The Island-Hopping Grand Tour

500 km 10–15 days

Combine Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza on a grand 500 km tour using inter-island ferries. Start in Palma, drive north to Alcúdia, ferry to Ciutadella, explore Menorca, then sail to Ibiza via Mallorca. This multi-island adventure across the Balearic Islands lets you compare each island's character, from Menorca's tranquillity to Ibiza's energy. Book ferry crossings in advance for motorhomes.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands have a well-maintained road network, though it differs from mainland Spain. Mallorca features the Ma-1 motorway connecting Palma to Inca, which is toll-free. Most island roads are single or dual carriageway, with speed limits of 90 km/h on main roads and 120 km/h on the motorway — though motorhomes over 3,500 kg must keep to 80 km/h on open roads and 90 km/h on motorways. Mountain roads in the Serra de Tramuntana are narrow and winding, so a campervan is often more practical than a larger vehicle. Menorca and Ibiza have simpler road networks with one main road crossing each island. Fuel stations are well distributed across Mallorca but less frequent on the smaller islands, so plan accordingly.
