Why hire a campervan or motorhome in La Rioja

La Rioja — a region worth exploring

La Rioja is home to over 500 wineries packed into Spain's smallest mainland region, making it one of the most concentrated wine-producing areas in the world. Despite covering just 5,045 square kilometres, this compact territory delivers an extraordinary range of landscapes — from the vine-striped valleys of the Ebro basin to the rugged peaks of the Sierra de la Demanda, which rise above 2,000 metres. The capital, Logroño, sits roughly 150 km west of Zaragoza and 340 km north of Madrid, placing it at a natural crossroads for road trips through northern Spain. History runs deep here: the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are considered the birthplace of written Spanish. Further south, the town of Enciso preserves real dinosaur footprints along a well-marked palaeontological trail, while the medieval quarter of Santo Domingo de la Calzada draws pilgrims walking the Camino de Santiago. The region's quiet roads and manageable distances make it ideal for exploring by campervan or motorhome — you can cross from the Rioja Alta wine country to the Rioja Baja plains in under two hours. With Yescapa, you can hire a campervan directly from local owners across La Rioja and neighbouring cities, choosing from a wide variety of vehicles to match your group size and travel style.

Best time to visit

La Rioja is a rewarding destination throughout the year. The grape harvest season, known as the Vendimia, runs from late September into October, when towns like Logroño host lively wine festivals and you can witness the vineyards at their most colourful. June is another highlight, with the Batalla del Vino in Haro on 29 June — a unique celebration where participants drench each other in red wine. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures and quieter roads, perfect for a campervan trip through the Sierra de Cebollera or along the Ebro valley. Summer is the busiest period, so booking your motorhome on Yescapa early gives you access to competitive peer-to-peer prices and a wider choice of vehicles.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in La Rioja

La Rioja is well connected by the AP-68 motorway, which runs east–west through the Ebro valley and is a toll road — payment is made at toll booths by card or cash. The free alternative, the N-232, follows a similar route and is popular with motorhome travellers. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,500 kg are generally 90 km/h on dual carriageways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Most regional roads are well maintained and suitable for larger vehicles, though some mountain routes in the Sierra de la Demanda have tighter bends. Rest areas with basic facilities appear regularly along the AP-68 and N-232.

We had such a wonderful experience renting Ivan’s camper van for a week! Honestly, everything was even better than we expected. We had absolutely everything we needed — and then some. ❤️ The van was super clean, very well equipped, comfortable, and really performant. One of the things we loved most was the solar setup. We never needed to plug the van into electricity during our trip because the solar panels and battery system worked amazingly well — somehow, the battery just never seemed to run out! It made everything so easy and gave us a lot of freedom during our trip. All the practical things were also incredibly straightforward. Filling up with fresh water, emptying the grey water, and taking care of all the little camper-van things were really easy once Ivan explained everything to us. He made sure we had everything we needed before setting off, and it was clear that he genuinely cared about us having a good experience. And Ivan himself was was incredibly friendly, kind, helpful, and easy to communicate with. He checked in on us after a few days just to make sure everything was going well — not in an intrusive way at all, but in that really nice way where you can tell someone genuinely cares and wants to know that you’re having a good time. 🥰 We had quite a few questions along the way because there’s naturally a lot of information to remember when you first get a camper van, and every time we messaged him, he replied super quickly and was incredibly helpful. He also gave us great recommendations about places to visit and where to go, which made the whole trip even better. Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The van was amazing, everything was easy and well thought-out, and Ivan was such a lovely host. If you’re planning a camper van trip along the north coast of Spain, we would absolutely recommend renting from Ivan. You’ll be in very good hands! We would 100% do it again. 🚐☀️❤️

Our hire experience was very smooth, the vehicle was exactly as described and the little extras provided by Jackeline & Juan made us feel welcomed & made the first day or so easier as we got used to van life. J&J were available to answer any questions we had during our trip and though we didn’t speak each other’s native languages we managed perfectly to communicate with AI & the instructive videos provided. Collection & return were easy. All in all a fabulous experience, one we would repeat and highly recommend. 5 Stars all round!
