Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Extremadura

Extremadura — a region worth exploring

Extremadura is home to Monfragüe National Park, one of only fifteen national parks in Spain, where colonies of black vultures and imperial eagles nest among quartzite crags above the River Tagus. This western Spanish region stretches from the Sierra de Gata in the north to the rolling dehesa pastures of Tentudía in the south, covering over 41,600 square kilometres. The Roman ruins of Mérida, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, include a remarkably preserved theatre still used for performances, while the medieval old town of Cáceres — also UNESCO-listed — feels like stepping into another century. From Cáceres to Mérida is roughly 70 km along the Autovía de la Plata, and from Plasencia to the Jerte Valley, famous for its spring cherry blossom, is just 30 km through winding mountain roads. Extremadura's wide-open landscapes and quiet back roads make it ideal territory for campervan travel, with plenty of space to pull over and take in the scenery. The region's reservoirs, such as the Embalse de García de Sola and Orellana, offer waterside stops that feel wonderfully remote. Whether you prefer a compact campervan for navigating mountain villages or a larger motorhome for extended touring, Yescapa connects you with local owners across Extremadura who share their vehicles peer-to-peer, so you can hire exactly what suits your trip and explore at your own pace.

Best time to visit

Spring is a spectacular time to hire a campervan in Extremadura — the Jerte Valley Cherry Blossom Festival in late March and early April draws visitors from across Spain. Autumn brings the WOMAD Cáceres world music festival, usually held in May, and comfortable temperatures for touring. Summer days are long and bright, perfect for lakeside stops at Extremadura's many reservoirs. Winter remains mild compared to much of inland Spain, and campsites are quieter, giving you more freedom to choose your pitch. Booking through Yescapa's peer-to-peer platform often means more competitive pricing outside peak months, and local owners can share tips on the best seasonal routes across Extremadura.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Extremadura

Extremadura's main motorways — the A-5 connecting Madrid to Badajoz and the A-66 Autovía de la Plata running north–south — are toll-free, making long-distance travel straightforward and affordable. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3,500 kg are 90 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. Rest areas along the A-66 are well spaced and often include shaded parking suitable for larger vehicles. Be aware that some rural roads in mountainous areas like the Sierra de Gata can be narrow, so a compact campervan may be more comfortable there.

Unfortunately, the rented van had a technical problem, which couldn't be solved by the car manufacturer's service. The owner did everything to find a replacement van for me, and he was successful, which I really appreciate. Despite of these circumstances, I could spend a very nice time on Madeira with the help of him!

Great service, very good vehicle, which was basically brand new in this case and well equipped. The introduction to the camper near Faro was absolutely flawless and thorough. Bruno made us familiar with all critical and non-critical aspects of the bus. He was also always reachable and kindly helped us out when we had to change our drop-off date and time due to an emergency change in our plans. I would fully recommend this company!
