Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Scotland

Scotland — a region worth exploring

Scotland's North Coast 500 route stretches across 516 miles of dramatic coastline, widely regarded as one of the world's most rewarding driving experiences. From the rugged peaks of the Cairngorms National Park to the wild shores of the Isle of Skye, this is a land shaped by nature on a grand scale. Edinburgh, the capital, sits around 155 miles south of Inverness, the gateway to the Highlands, while Glasgow to Fort William covers roughly 105 miles through lochs and glens. Landmarks like Loch Ness, Eilean Donan Castle, the Kelpies sculpture near Falkirk, and the Old Man of Storr on Skye give every road trip a sense of discovery. Scotland's roads range from smooth dual carriageways in the Lowlands to single-track routes in the far north, making vehicle choice an important part of planning. A campervan handles narrow Highland lanes with ease, while a motorhome offers extra comfort for longer tours across the country. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners based throughout Scotland — from Edinburgh and Glasgow to Inverness and Aberdeen — giving you a wide choice of vehicles and flexible pick-up points. The peer-to-peer model means competitive pricing and personal recommendations from people who know the region best. Whether you are drawn to coastal cliffs, ancient castles, or whisky distilleries, a campervan trip through Scotland puts you right at the heart of it all.

Best time to visit

Scotland welcomes travellers year-round, with each season offering its own appeal. May to September brings the longest daylight hours — ideal for driving the Highlands and camping beside lochs. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe lights up August with thousands of performances, while the Braemar Gathering in September celebrates Highland games and tradition. Spring and autumn are quieter on the roads, and Yescapa's peer-to-peer model often means more competitive hire rates outside peak months. Winter opens up opportunities for northern lights spotting in the far north. Book your campervan early for summer to secure the best choice of vehicles from local owners across Scotland.

The North Coast 500

830 km 7–15 days

Scotland's most celebrated driving loop starts and ends in Inverness, circling the northern Highlands through Durness, John o' Groats, and Applecross. At around 830 km, this route suits a motorhome or campervan and takes at least a week to enjoy properly. Expect single-track roads, wild beaches, and well-placed campsites along the way.

The Highland Whisky Trail

480 km 5–8 days

This 480 km route links Speyside's famous distilleries with the dramatic scenery of the Cairngorms. Start in Perth, head north through Pitlochry and Aviemore, then loop through Dufftown and Aberlour before returning south. A campervan is ideal for navigating the quieter Speyside roads, with plenty of farm campsites to stop at along the way.

The Isle of Skye Explorer

250 km 3–6 days

Covering around 250 km from Fort William to Skye and back, this short route packs in some of Scotland's most memorable landscapes. Cross the Skye Bridge, visit the Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools, then return via Eilean Donan Castle. Campervan-friendly campsites are dotted across the island, though booking ahead is recommended.

The Borders Heritage Loop

200 km 3–5 days

A 200 km loop through the Scottish Borders, starting from Edinburgh and passing through Melrose, Jedburgh, and Kelso. The West Coast Atlantic Route

This 600 km route runs from Edinburgh up through Dundee, Aberdeen, and on to Inverness along Scotland's east coast. What you need to know about roads and motorways in Scotland

Scotland has no motorway tolls, making it straightforward to plan your route without worrying about extra costs. The main motorways — the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and the M9 and M90 heading north — are well maintained and suitable for all vehicle sizes. Speed limits for motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes are 60 mph on motorways and 50 mph on single carriageways. In the Highlands, many roads become single-track with passing places; patience and courtesy are key. Rest areas and laybys are well signposted throughout the country. Larger motorhomes should check height and width restrictions on some rural bridges and narrow lanes in the far north and west.

We had an excellent experience renting João’s van through Yescapa. Communication was fantastic from start to finish, and João was always quick to respond and help with anything we needed. Any questions or minor issues we had were sorted out straight away, which made the whole trip stress free. The van was the perfect size for two people travelling around Portugal. It was comfortable, easy to drive, and had everything we needed for our adventure. We would highly recommend João to anyone looking to explore Portugal by van and wouldn’t hesitate to rent from him again.

Nicolas and partner met us at the train station with their van! Both were extremely nice!, thorough with explanations, answered all questions patiently, rigorous with procedure to document the pre-trip van status and overall gave a great first impression of how this trip would go. Being used to non-self-contained van life back in the US, we got a feel for the van inside space quickly even on the first night. Sequence of cooking, cleaning, setting up the bed in the evening (and the reverse in the morning) became self-evident quickly. Sleeping surface is comfortable, and we got great sleeps after daily hiking. The van drives great and is the right size for narrow roads and most of the parking areas because of the height. Fuel efficiency is great. One potential improvement suggestion would be to have one removable screen to enable leaving one of the side windows open during the night for ventilation without ingress of mosquitos. Nicolas responded very quickly to any texts. This was a 20-day outing around the Provence and a great experience with this van and hosts.

We had a fantastic time in Sardinia, and the campervan was the perfect companion for our trip. The van ran smoothly, was incredibly cozy, and was well-equipped with everything we needed. We were especially impressed by the layout, which offers plenty of sleeping space for two plus two adults. A huge thank you to Séverine, who is a wonderful owner. Her warmth, kindness, and helpfulness truly made our experience special. We had a small challenge on our final night at the Alghero Laguna Blu campsite: we discovered the mosquito door nets a bit too late, which unfortunately allowed quite a few mosquitoes to get inside the van. For future renters, definitely remember to check for those nets early in the evening! We would highly recommend both the camper and Séverine to anyone planning a trip. We truly enjoyed our stay and would love to rent from her again.

We had a wonderful time traveling with this camper van! Antonio is extremely nice and very easy to communicate with. The van was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. Thanks to the solar panel, we did not need to worry about parking overnight in a place that had electricity. The check-in and check-out process with Antonio was very easy. One thing that would have been appreciated is a couple of bath towels and kitchen towels. We ended up purchasing a bath towel (Peppa Pig themed, the only towel we could find at Lidl haha) and left it with Antonio, so hopefully future renters can use that! Renters should keep in mind that this van does NOT have air conditioning. It might be easy to overlook this detail in the description. Overall, we are very happy we chose this van for our trip! Highly recommend. :)
