Why choose Edinburgh for your road trip

Edinburgh — a city worth exploring

Edinburgh's Royal Mile stretches exactly one Scots mile — 1.81 km — from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, connecting over a thousand years of Scottish history in a single walk. The city sits between the Firth of Forth to the north and the Pentland Hills to the south, giving you coastal views and rolling green landscapes within easy reach. Arthur's Seat, the 251-metre extinct volcano right in the city centre, offers panoramic views across the skyline. Culture lovers can spend hours at the Scottish National Gallery or the National Museum of Scotland, while the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides a peaceful escape just north of the centre. Glasgow is only 74 km west, making it a natural day trip, and the Scottish Borders town of Peebles sits just 37 km to the south for a quieter countryside stop. Edinburgh's compact Old Town has narrow lanes and steep gradients, so planning your route and parking ahead of time is a smart move when travelling in a larger vehicle. A campervan gives you the flexibility to explore the city and then head out to the coast or highlands at your own pace. For those considering a motorhome, the surrounding areas offer excellent facilities and open roads. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Edinburgh, which means a more personal experience and often a pick-up point closer to where you need it. A campervan from a fellow traveller is a great way to start your Scottish adventure.

Best time to visit

Edinburgh comes alive in August with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, drawing performers and visitors from every corner of the globe. Hogmanay celebrations in late December offer a spectacular New Year's experience unique to the city. Spring and early summer, from April to June, bring longer days and comfortable temperatures for exploring by campervan. Campsite availability is best when you book ahead for the summer months, as Edinburgh is a popular season destination. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value compared to traditional hire, especially outside peak periods. Autumn rewards you with golden colours across the Pentland Hills and quieter roads for motorhome travel.

Where to park your motorhome

Parking a campervan or motorhome in Edinburgh requires a bit of planning, as the city centre has restricted zones and height barriers on many car parks. The best approach is to use park-and-ride sites on the outskirts, which offer generous space for larger vehicles and direct bus links into the centre. Overnight parking in public car parks is generally not permitted without specific signage allowing it, so always check local notices. The council enforces parking regulations closely, especially in residents' zones.

  • Straiton Park and Ride, 8km south — Located near the A720 bypass to the south of Edinburgh, with frequent bus connections to the city centre. Open surface car park with room for campervans. Convenient for accessing the Old Town.
  • Ingliston Park and Ride, 12km west — Large open-air park-and-ride near Edinburgh Airport with space for motorhomes. Direct tram link to the city centre in about 30 minutes. Free parking during the day; check signage for overnight rules.
  • Hermiston Park and Ride, 9km southwest — Situated off the A71 near the city bypass, this park-and-ride has ample space and regular bus services into Edinburgh. Suitable for larger vehicles. Free to use during operating hours.

What our users say about our campervans and motorhomes in Edinburgh

Our experience with Yescapa was extremely poor. The pickup location for the camper was incorrect, which caused us to lose both time and money, as we had to take an Uber to the actual location, which we essentially had to figure out ourselves. When we arrived at the Roadsurfer office, they initially refused to rent us the camper because they claimed that my driving licence had not been issued by a country accepted by the company. However, when I made the reservation through Yescapa, I provided all the required information and uploaded photos of my licence. This caused us further delays and additional expenses, as I had to pay for an international driving licence validation. Communication was also very poor. We were basically unable to get in touch with anyone to ask our questions or receive assistance regarding the issues we encountered.

Pepe was lovely from beginning to end. All of our requests were accommodated and he was responsive when needed. The pickup service was very nice, even though we were a bit delayed at the beginning (also around 23.30) he still patiently waited for us at the airport without a hassle. This made the beginning of the trip very nice and the small gift was consumed almost immediately, thank you once again. ;) The van was super also, the bad is very very comfy, I am 183 cms and it was perfect for my height. The AC is a very nice addition also, which made even the staying in the blazing sun bearable in the van. Would recommend both the host and the van to anyone!

We had a superb long weekend trip in Gonçalo’s converted van and couldn’t be happier with the experience. Gonçalo was a very friendly owner and always responded promptly to all our questions, which made everything easy and stress-free from the beginning. The van came with everything we needed and was very well prepared for our trip. It was comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for our family of four. Gonçalo was also incredibly helpful throughout, which we really appreciated. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend both Gonçalo and his van to anyone looking for a great family campervan experience.

Mathieu was easy to communicate with and flexible. The van is perfect- simple, well organized, and very comfortable for sleeping. Mathieu equips the kitchen with some basics, and 2 camping chairs- it is really nice.
