Edinburgh's Royal Mile stretches exactly one Scots mile — 1.81 km — from Edinburgh Castle down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, connecting over a thousand years of Scottish history in a single walk. The city sits between the Firth of Forth to the north and the Pentland Hills to the south, giving you coastal views and rolling green landscapes within easy reach. Arthur's Seat, the 251-metre extinct volcano right in the city centre, offers panoramic views across the skyline. Culture lovers can spend hours at the Scottish National Gallery or the National Museum of Scotland, while the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh provides a peaceful escape just north of the centre. Glasgow is only 74 km west, making it a natural day trip, and the Scottish Borders town of Peebles sits just 37 km to the south for a quieter countryside stop. Edinburgh's compact Old Town has narrow lanes and steep gradients, so planning your route and parking ahead of time is a smart move when travelling in a larger vehicle. A campervan gives you the flexibility to explore the city and then head out to the coast or highlands at your own pace. For those considering a motorhome, the surrounding areas offer excellent facilities and open roads. With Yescapa, you can hire directly from local owners across Edinburgh, which means a more personal experience and often a pick-up point closer to where you need it. A campervan from a fellow traveller is a great way to start your Scottish adventure.
Edinburgh comes alive in August with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest arts festival, drawing performers and visitors from every corner of the globe. Hogmanay celebrations in late December offer a spectacular New Year's experience unique to the city. Spring and early summer, from April to June, bring longer days and comfortable temperatures for exploring by campervan. Campsite availability is best when you book ahead for the summer months, as Edinburgh is a popular season destination. With Yescapa, peer-to-peer pricing often means better value compared to traditional hire, especially outside peak periods. Autumn rewards you with golden colours across the Pentland Hills and quieter roads for motorhome travel.
Edinburgh is the perfect base for exploring the region by motorhome or campervan. Here are our 6 must-see getaways
Head 82 km northeast across the Forth Road Bridge to St Andrews, the home of golf. Explore the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and stroll along the famous Old Course. Stop in Anstruther for fresh fish and chips by the harbour. Campervan-friendly parking is available along the Fife coast.
Just 50 km south, Peebles sits on the banks of the River Tweed amid the gentle Scottish Borders. Visit Neidpath Castle and ride the trails at Glentress Forest, one of Scotland's top mountain biking spots. The A703 offers a relaxed motorhome drive through green valleys. Parking is available at the edge of town.
Drive 130 km north to Pitlochry in the heart of the Highlands. Tour the Blair Athol Distillery and walk through the Pass of Killiecrankie. Queen's View at Loch Tummel offers one of Scotland's most celebrated panoramas. Campsites in the area cater well to campervans and larger vehicles alike.
Fort William lies 185 km northwest at the foot of Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak. Take the A9 and A82 past Loch Lomond and through Glen Coe, one of Scotland's most dramatic valleys. Visit the West Highland Museum in the town centre. Several pitches nearby offer views over Loch Linnhe.
Inverness sits 280 km north and serves as the gateway to the Highlands. Follow the A9 through the Cairngorms National Park and stop at Loch Ness to explore Urquhart Castle. In Inverness, walk along the River Ness and visit Inverness Cathedral. Campsites around Loch Ness offer pitches for every vehicle size.
The Isle of Skye lies 330 km northwest, reached via the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. Discover the Fairy Pools near Glenbrittle and the striking rock formations of the Old Man of Storr. Portree offers colourful harbour houses and local restaurants. Roads on Skye can be single-track, so a campervan handles them well. Pitches are available in Portree and Broadford.

Around Edinburgh, you will find campsites suited to both campervans and larger motorhomes. Some sit along the Firth of Forth coastline, while others nestle in the green Lothian hills. Most offer electric hook-ups, toilet and shower blocks, and Wi-Fi. Whether you prefer a pitch close to the city or a quieter spot in the countryside, the area around Edinburgh has options to match your plans.
Edinburgh has specific parking rules for larger vehicles. Most city-centre spaces are sized for standard cars, so it is best to use designated large-vehicle car parks. Overnight sleeping in your vehicle on public roads is not permitted. Use official campsites or dedicated motorhome stops instead. Several Park and Ride sites around the city accommodate larger vehicles and offer frequent bus connections to the centre.
O Pedro foi super prestável e ajudou imenso no início com todos os detalhes de como tirar o máximo proveito da autocaravana.
Paloma and Raid were great in every sense, thoughtful about everything, easy to communicate with and left the van in great condition upon return, and they are very pleasant people overall, so all the recommendations for them!
What a fantastic camper! It's cozy and comfortable, with everything you need on board. It also drives really nicely. We used it for a road trip along the Portuguese coast, and it was perfect for the trip. Pedro is an excellent owner: he took plenty of time to explain everything clearly, responds quickly to questions, and also gave us some great tips for the best spots to camp. In short, highly recommended!
Our trip with Davide’s van to the Dolomites and northern Italy was incredible. He was always responsive and helpful with all questions. His van is very impressive and has everything you need for a long journey. Would 10/10 do it again!
