Why hire a campervan or motorhome in Wales

Wales — a region worth exploring

Wales is home to over 750 castles — more per square mile than any other country in Europe — making it a remarkable destination for a road trip by campervan or motorhome. From the towering ramparts of Caernarfon Castle in the north to the romantic ruins of Carreg Cennen in the south, history is woven into every landscape. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path stretches for 300 kilometres along dramatic sea cliffs, while Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales at 1,085 metres, draws walkers and adventurers year-round. The drive from Cardiff to Llandudno covers roughly 250 kilometres, passing through the lush Brecon Beacons, and from Swansea to St Davids — Britain's smallest city — is just 115 kilometres along winding coastal roads. Wales rewards those who take their time: narrow lanes thread through green valleys, and wild beaches appear around every headland. Compact enough to explore in a week yet rich enough for a month, the country is ideal for campervan travel, with well-spaced campsites from Anglesey to the Gower Peninsula. Through Yescapa, you can hire a motorhome or campervan directly from local owners across Wales, choosing from a wide range of vehicles to suit your group and your route. The peer-to-peer model means competitive prices and personal recommendations from people who know these roads best.

Best time to visit

May to September is the prime window for a campervan trip through Wales, with long daylight hours and mild temperatures ideal for coastal walks and mountain hikes. The Hay Festival in late May draws book lovers to the Brecon Beacons area, while the Royal Welsh Show in July celebrates rural life in Builth Wells. Spring and early autumn are quieter, with campsites across Wales easier to book and roads less busy. Hiring through Yescapa in the shoulder months often means better rates from local owners, giving you more flexibility to explore at your own pace.

What you need to know about roads and motorways in Wales

Wales has no toll motorways, so you can travel freely without worrying about charges. The main routes are the M4 along the south coast and the A55 expressway across the north, both well suited to motorhomes. Speed limits for vehicles over 3,050 kg are 50 mph on single carriageways and 60 mph on dual carriageways. Many Welsh roads are single-track lanes with passing places, particularly in Snowdonia and mid-Wales, so a campervan can be easier to manoeuvre than a larger vehicle. Road signs appear in both Welsh and English throughout the country.

Amazing rental. Best I ever experienced. Car was amazing and we were recommended to go offroad with it which was absolutely fantastic. The car goes anywhere and the cleanliness and rooftop tent setup was perfect. We camped some very beautiful places and the camping setup in the car has everything you would need for your trip. There was good communication between us and the renter - they responded very fast and was very helpful in recommending places to go.

We had a really good trip through Bulgaria with Ivo's car. He really prepared the car with everything you can need. It's a bit unusual to drive a car working with CNG and not the easiest to refill but Ivo provided us the informations to plan our refill easily.
